This book was released on 2018-09-26 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soon after information from Lewis and Clark's expedition to chart the western region of the United States was shared, investors and explorers sought ways to capitalize on the information. In this work, Alexander Ross details the trials and tribulations of one such expedition, now known as the Astor Expedition. Ross was employed by John Jacob Astor's Pacific Fur Company, and this led to the founding Fort Astoria, an American outpost near the Columbia River. Although the title suggests that members of Astoria were "the first settlers" of the region, it fails to consider the numerous indigenous tribes Ross encountered and described in great detail. For example, this work includes an appendix of Chinook vocabulary, highlighting how extensive and advanced the indigenous populations were that had already settled in that region. The fort itself was populated by a variety of people, including French-Canadians, Scots, Hawaiians, Americans, and a variety of indigenous North American peoples, such as Iroquois. Due to the War of 1812, the fort was bought out by the North West Company, which renamed it Fort George.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Book of Information, and Settlers Guide for the Pacific Slope, Including the States of California, Oregon and Nevada, and Territories of Washington and Idaho, With a Description of and the Peculiarities of Each The writer of this little work having for some time been engaged on a work of considerable magnitude (Harrison's Guide and Resources of the Pacific Slope, ) has been addressed by letter and otherwise by many persons, both in the East and on this Coast, seeking information in regard to this section of country. Although we have in every instance paid the best attention that our time and circumstances would permit, yet owing to the great diversity of topography, soil, climate, productions, etc., of this Coast, it was impossible to give any very definite or intelligible idea of the country by any written or verbal communication of ordinary length. Besides, it became a heavy tax on our time, not to say anything of the expense attached, as it costs writers something to live as well as other people. Book Synopsis The Old Oregon Country by : Oscar Osburn Winther
Download or read book The Old Oregon Country written by Oscar Osburn Winther and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1950-01-01 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pacific Northwest, the old Oregon country, was one of the most remote and inaccessible frontier areas, but it was also known to be rich in natural resources. The opening up of this region is a story of courage, endurance, and pioneer enterprise. Transportation in this rugged country was a problem to the settlers who would promote commerce and travel, just as it was a problem to the earlier fur traders. The construction of roads and development of water routes progressed through the years until the railroad finally came to the Northwest, but at no time did the scarcity of roads prevent settlers from pushing back the frontier. Here the whole story of travel and travelers in this region is told for the first time. The book is based largely on primary sources and, as such, is a contribution to history. As an account of courage and ingenuity, transportation monopoly against transportation monopoly, and man versus nature, it is fascinating reading. University Professor of History at Indiana University, O. O. Winther is the author of Express and Stagecoach Days in California and Via Western Express and Stagecoach.
