Book excerpt: Forbes contributor Amy Shoenthal’s revolutionary strategies for working through life’s inevitable setbacks, supported by research and personal stories from today’s most prolific founders, leaders, and experts. How do you know if you’re going through a setback? And once you realize you’re in one, how do you work through it? Some of the world’s most prominent leaders attribute their setbacks to the reason they found success. Their lowest moments paved the way for their creative rebirth. Through the four phases of The Setback Cycle—Establish, Embrace, Explore, and Emerge—Amy Shoenthal guides readers on how to make sense of their experiences, gain clarity on what comes next, and move confidently into future endeavors. That framework, developed through research and conversations with scholars, psychologists, neuroscientists, and executive coaches is supported through the deeply personal stories of founders and leaders like fashion icons Stacy London and Norma Kamali, fitness instructors Robin Arzón and Kendall Toole, chef Palak Patel, non-binary beauty influencer Cyrus Veyssi, and inspirational founders like Cate Luzio, Erica Taylor, Amanda Goetz, and more. Whether you’re stuck in a rut after a breakup or trying to navigate an unexpected professional transition, The Setback Cycle offers guidance on how to take yourself through your toughest moments and forge a stronger path forward.

Book excerpt: One of the best classical methods of technical analysis brought up to date This book offers a modern treatment of Hurst's original system of market cycle analysis. It will teach you how to get to the point where you can isolate cycles in any freely-traded financial instrument and make an assessment of their likely future course. Although Hurst's methodology can seem outwardly complex, the logic underpinning it is straightforward. With practice the skill needed to conduct a full cycle analysis quickly and effectively will become second nature. The rewards for becoming adept are high conviction trades, tight risk management and mastery of a largely non-correlated system of analysis. In this extensive step-by-step guide you will find a full description of the principal tools and techniques taught by Hurst as well as over 120 colour charts, together with tables and diagrams. The Updata and TradeStation code for all of the indicators shown is also included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like most of humankind's great theories, the cyclical view of the universe is at once elegant in its sim-plicity and utterly persuasive. Scholars, pundits, and experts in all walks of life—from Carl Jung to Arthur Schlesinger and from Paul Volcker to Lee Iacocca—proclaim the validity of cycles. In this fascinating work, Samuel A. Schreiner, Jr., spells out in layperson's terms how to look for patterns in unpredictable environments and how to spot the recurring forces that can predict changes in one's health, moods, and relationships, in financial investments, the weather, politics, and the state of the world. Incorporating over fifty years of research on hundreds of different cycles by scientists affiliated with the Foundation for the Study of Cycles, The World Ac-cording to Cycles enables readers to recognize many naturally recurring patterns in their daily lives. Scientists affiliated with the Foundation have correctly predicted such events as the 1987 stock market crash, a killer earthquake in Armenia, and the 1988 U.S. presidential election. The World According to Cycles will help readers develop the ability to predict a wide variety of occurrences so they can apply a greater understanding of the rhythms of everyday existence to their personal relationships, emotional well-being, employer-employee relations, and judgment and decision-making in business and finance.

Book excerpt: As financial positions expand, the economy becomes more vulnerable to adverse and unexpected developments taking place outside the six to seven year business cycle. Over 50 years ago Nikolai Kondratieff developed the theory of "The Long Waves in Economic Life", which incorporated an extended cycle of innovation and upward thrust, and changed our understanding of business cycles in financial settings. Financial Cycles concentrates on two areas that have thus far been omitted from mainstream economics. The first is the impact of the longer term financial cycle; the second is the beginning of de-globalization as the world enters an era of iron-glad economic blocks. Chorafas argues that to overcome the more narrow limits of the business cycle, we need to go beyond its traditional six to seven year focus and address the longer term. This includes the building-up and running-off of economic risks characterizing the financial cycle, as well as the appreciation of forces underwriting both its growth and its decay. An ever-increasing public debt and the behavior of the banking industry are two principal reasons why the structure of analysis characterizing the previous financial cycle no longer fits present-day realities. A new methodology starts getting in shape, even if it still has to acquire political legitimacy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forecasting Financial Markets provides a compelling insight into the psychology of trading behaviour and shows how "following the herd" can have disastrous results. It demonstrates how your ability to make money in the world's financial markets depends critically on your ability to make decisions independently of the crowd. Given the impact of the global credit crunch, it has become even more essential to be able to distinguish between short-term and longer-term trends at a time when panic selling and 'fire-sale' purchases are common. Forecasting Financial Markets details the three dimensions essential to achieve successful trading, including an ability to understand the forces at work in logical terms, recognize (and neutralize) any emotional responses to market fluctuations, and design an investment process or trading system that generates objective 'buy' or 'sell' signals. Taking the author's latest research into account, this important book provides you with an in-depth assessment of the phenomenon of cycles, patterns of economic and financial activity, and how to use cycles as a forecasting tool - including the author's forecasts for when the global economy will emerge from its current downturn.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life-cycle assessment of new energy solutions plays an important role in discussions about global warming mitigation options and the evaluation of concrete energy production and conversion installations. This book starts by describing the methodology of life-cycle analysis and life-cycle assessment of new energy solutions. It then goes on to cover, in detail, a range of applications to individual energy installations, national supply systems, and to the global energy system in a climate impact context. Coverage is not limited to issues related to commercial uses by consultants according to ISO norms. It also emphasizes life-cycle studies as an open-ended scientific discipline embracing economic issues of cost, employment, equity, foreign trade balances, ecological sustainability, and a range of geo-political and social issues. A wealth of applications are described and a discussion on the results obtained in each study is included. Example areas are fossil and nuclear power plants, renewable energy systems, and systems based on hydrogen or batteries as energy carriers. The analysis is continued to the end-users of energy, where energy use in transportation, industry and home are scrutinized for their life-cycle impacts. Biofuel production and the combustion of firewood in home fireplaces and stoves are amongst the issues discussed. A central theme of the book is global warming. The impacts of greenhouse gas emissions are meticulously mapped at a depth far beyond that of the IPCC reports. A novel and surprising finding is that more lives will be saved than lost as a direct consequence of a warmer climate. After a 2oC increase in temperature, the reduction in death rates in areas with cold winters would outweigh the increase in the death rates in hot climates. However, this is only one of several impacts from greenhouse gases, and the remaining ones are still overwhelmingly negative. The fact that some population groups may benefit from higher temperatures (notably the ones most responsible for greenhouse gas emissions) whilst others (who did not contribute much to the problem) suffer is one of the main points of the book. The book is suitable as a university textbook and as a reference source for engineers, managers and public bodies responsible for planning and licensing.
