This earth is not our true home. It is only a place of trial, a place of 'probation. And yet, upon our few short years of probation here below, will depend a happy or miserable eternity. We have not here a lasting city, says the Bible, but seek out that is to come. Hence our great and permanent work is to save our immortal souls and thus prepare them for Heaven. Seek ye first the Kingdom' of God and His Justice, says Christ. For what shall it profit a man 'if he gain the whole world and suffer the loss of his soul. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catholic Question in America: Whether a Roman Catholic Clergyman Be in Any Case Compellable to Disclose the Secrets of Auriecular Confession; Decided at the Court of General Sessions, in the City of New York And now may it please the court, to bear with me while I examine the decisions upon which this rule is at; tempted to be supported. At the outset I boldly affirm, without fear of contradiction, that the Attorney General can produce but two cases, in which the question has ever been raised in relation to a clergyman neither. Of which can be of authority in the United States, both hav ing been decided since our revolution.-i go farther - I say the cases would not be binding in Great Britain. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Confessional It is well to remember that these admonitions and penances must not be given to every penitent as they are written out; they are only hints to confessors, who are to judge for them selves what will suit hic at wane, and who are to modify them according to the circumstances and dispositions of their penitents. Not all things are good for all, nor are all things expedient at all nines. The Wise Man says: All shall be well approved in their time. (eccli. Xxxix. Omnia mecum porlo. This book may properly be called a Vade-mecum. The Rt. Rev. T. Mullen, D. D., Bishop of Erie, says of The Confessional: Priests will find this book a most useful companion in the library and pulpit, as well as in the confessional. To priests, particularly, who are engaged in missionary duty, 'the Confessional' will be eminently serviceable, as it will enable them to make their meditation with fruit; or if so occupied with other duties, as is often the case, that they find it impossible to prepare an instruction for the people, they need only read over for a few minutes attentively the meditation assigned in 'the Confessional for the Sunday or feastday they are celebret ing, to acquit themselves in a way that will satisfy their own consciences and edify the faithful. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Confession and Absolution: The Teaching of the Church of England, as Interpreted and Illustrated by the Writings of the Reformers of the Sixteenth Century The object and scope of the following treatise are strictly defined by the title of the book. It is not proposed to describe the practice of Confession and Absolution in the primitive, mediaeval, or modern Church, beyond what is necessary for the main purpose in view. That purpose is to illustrate the formularies of our Church, from the writings of the men who were most concerned in compiling them. Accordingly, the questions propounded are as follows: What was the teaching on these subjects of the leading English Divines during the reigns of Henry VIII and his successors? What action did they take, so as to bring our public services, and formal statements of doctrine, into line with what they believed to be Scriptural and Primitive truth? It is to these questions that an attempt has been made to supply an answer. Whatever may be the view taken of the teaching or practice of our English Reformers, a candid study of their writings can lead to but one conclusion. They were not only men of deep piety and strong convictions, but also of intellectual power and solid learning. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Confession is a history of penance as a virtue and a sacrament in the United States from about 1634, when Catholicism arrived in Maryland, to 2015, fifty years after the major theological and disciplinary changes initiated by the Second Vatican Council. Patrick W. Carey argues that the Catholic theology and practice of penance, so much opposed by the inheritors of the Protestant Reformation, kept alive the biblical penitential language in the United States at least until the mid-1960s when Catholic penitential discipline changed. During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, American Catholics created institutions that emphasized, in opposition to Protestant culture, confession to a priest as the normal and almost exclusive means of obtaining forgiveness. Preaching, teaching, catechesis, and parish revival-type missions stressed sacramental confession and the practice became a widespread routine in American Catholic life. After the Second Vatican Council, the practice of sacramental confession declined suddenly. The post-Vatican II history of penance, influenced by the Council's reforms and by changing American moral and cultural values, reveals a major shift in penitential theology; moving from an emphasis on confession to emphasis on reconciliation. Catholics make up about a quarter of the American population, and thus changes in the practice of penance had an impact on the wider society. In the fifty years since the Council, penitential language has been overshadowed increasingly by the language of conflict and controversy. In today's social and political climate, Confession may help Americans understand how far their society has departed from the penitential language of the earlier American tradition, and consider the advantages and disadvantages of such a departure.
