For as long as Alice Carmichael can remember, the only thing she's been able to count on is the written word. The war may have taken everything from her, but the stories she cherishes provide solace and escape into a world that is more hopeful than 1942 England. So when Alice finds herself at the mercy and kindness of strangers, miles from everything she's ever known, it's little surprise that books become her purpose. Now, Alice must channel the courage of her favourite heroines to risk everything for her country. Because it's only in writing her own story that Alice can seize the destiny her beloved books have taught her she deserves...

Fans of Before We Were Yours, Wives of War and Diney Costeloe will be utterly swept away by this heartbreaking - yet beautifully hopeful - World War Two page-turner. With the war raging, Lily has learned not to take life for granted. In a time of such tragedy, every day is a gift. Her husband is a soldier, fighting to save their country, and she prays that she will survive - to one day welcome him home. One sweltering July night, bombs rain down. Lily and her dear friend Ethel, who is nine months pregnant, seek refuge in a shelter. Miraculously, a baby girl is born to the sound of ear-splitting shrieks and explosions in the distance. Once the raid quietens, Lily races into the house to find the newborn a blanket. But then the unthinkable happens, planes thundering right over the rooftops... When Lily rouses, finding herself amongst broken glass and crumbled brick, she is devastated to discover that Ethel has been killed - leaving little Joy behind. With tears rolling down her face, Lily makes a split-second decision. To save the orphaned child, Lily must tell a heartbreaking lie, a secret that she holds close to her chest for years. Deep within the forest is the laboratory where her father works—and where her mother was blown to bits years ago. Christina's father knows just how dangerous the world can be, so he keeps her safe at home, forbidding her from talking to the very interesting orphans down the road. But when an orphan boy named Taft talks to her, she's thrilled to help him search for a secret tunnel. But soon she discovers there's more to the orphanage, the lab, and the mystery of her mother's accident than she ever suspected. Sinister things are in the works—and the secret of zoom is the most dangerous secret of all! “This exciting tale, with just a touch of fantasy and humor, is a winner. ... Jonell displays pitch-perfect skills in an expertly crafted story that never flags and that includes plenty of heart-stopping situations to keep readers fully engaged.” —School Library Journal, Starred Review

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is said that love is the greatest gift of all, but in reality, there are two greatest gifts. One is love, that much we already know to be true. However, the second greatest gift is that of being a child, for it is only as a child that one knows how to truly believe. And it is this simple act of believing that has its own special kind of magic, as you will see in this story. When a child believes, there is an energy that feeds everything and everyone around them. It feeds even those magical beings who most adults can no longer see nor will they ever see again because they no longer know how to see that which they stopped believing in. Sadly enough, there are even some children who stop believing. Sometimes it takes the energy of other children to awaken their beliefs again, and that is also the case in this story. So I invite you to reconnect to the magic that each of us once had, the magic that children always hold, and the magic that will bring you to a place where everything is possible. All you have to do is believe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In one of the first studies of its kind, Orphan texts seeks to insert the orphan, and the problems its existence poses, in the larger critical areas of the family and childhood in Victorian culture. In doing so, Laura Peters considers certain canonical texts alongside lesser known works from popular culture in order to establish the context in which discourses of orphanhood operated. The study argues that the prevalence of the orphan figure can be explained by considering the family. The family and all it came to represent – legitimacy, race and national belonging – was in crisis. In order to reaffirm itself the family needed a scapegoat: it found one in the orphan figure. As one who embodied the loss of the family, the orphan figure came to represent a dangerous threat to the family; and the family reaffirmed itself through the expulsion of this threatening difference. Orphan texts will be of interest to final year undergraduates, postgraduates, academics and those interested in the areas of Victorian literature, Victorian studies, postcolonial studies, history and popular culture.
