Book excerpt: An anonymous civil servant's hilarious and horrifying account of government amid Brexit chaos As Britain jigs daily between political crisis and constitutional meltdown, it's high time we understood what really goes on behind closed doors, from the corridors of Whitehall to the EU negotiating table. The Secret Civil Servant will reveal how Brexit unfolded behind-the-scenes, from the panic triggered by the EU referendum result in June 2016 to the last-gasp efforts to secure a deal in 2018. It will be a unique insight into the organisation we entrust to enact the will of the British people, exploring the role civil servants have to play in running the country, how decisions made in SW1 have significant consequences for everyone and what Brexit revealed about the cracks in the system. For fans of The Secret Barrister and Adam Kay's This is Going to Hurt, this witty and shocking account of the inner workings and ineptitude of government sheds new light on an extraordinary political era.

Book Synopsis The Official History of the British Civil Service by : Rodney Lowe
Download or read book The Official History of the British Civil Service written by Rodney Lowe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-07 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume of The Official History of the British Civil Service explores the radical restructuring of the Civil Service that took place during the Thatcher and Major premierships from 1982 until 1997, after a period of confusion and disagreement about its future direction. The book brings a much-needed historical perspective to the development of the ‘new public management’, in which the UK was a world-leader, and considers difficult questions about the quality of democratic governance in Britain and the constitutional position of its Civil Service. Based on extensive research using government papers and interviews with leading participants, it concentrates on attempts to reform the Civil Service from the centre. In doing so, it has important lessons to offer all those, both inside and outside the UK, seeking to improve the quality, efficiency and accountability of democratic governance. Particular light is shed on the origins of such current concerns as: The role of special advisers The need for a Prime Minister’s Department The search for cost efficiency Accountability to Parliament and its Select Committees Civil Service policy-making capacity and implementation capability. This book will be of much interest to students of British history, government and politics, and public administration.

Book Synopsis MI5, the Cold War, and the Rule of Law by : Keith Ewing
Download or read book MI5, the Cold War, and the Rule of Law written by Keith Ewing and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-05 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the powers, activities, and accountability of MI5 from the end of the Second World War to 1964. It argues that MI5 acted with neither statutory authority nor statutory powers, and with no obvious forms of statutory accountability. It was established as a counter-espionage agency, yet was beset by espionage scandals on a frequency that suggested if not high levels of incompetence, then high levels of distraction and the squandering of resources. The book addresses the evolution of MI5's mandate after the Second World War which set out its role and functions, and to a limited extent the lines of accountability, the surveillance targets of MI5 and the surveillance methods that it used for this purpose, with a focus in two chapters on MPs and lawyers respectively; the purposes for which this information was used, principally to exclude people from certain forms of employment; and the accountability of MI5 or the lack thereof for the way in which it discharged its responsibilities under the mandate. As lawyers the authors' concern is to consider these questions within the context of the rule of law, one of the core principles of the British constitution, the values of which it was the duty of the Security Service to uphold. Based on extensive archival research, it suggests that MI5 operated without legal authority or exceeded the legal authority it did have.

Holmes is a household name. But where would he be without his Biographer? Beavering away in Baker Street, unknown to everyone except Scotland Yard and a few luckless criminals. It is time to put the loyal and much put upon man, Dr. John H. Watson M.D., centre stage.

Book Synopsis Scientific governance in Britain, 1914–79 by : Don Leggett
Download or read book Scientific governance in Britain, 1914–79 written by Don Leggett and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2016-08-31 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific governance in Britain, 1914-79 examines the connected histories of how science was governed, and used in governance, in twentieth-century Britain. During the middle portion of that century, British science grew dramatically in scale, reach and value. These changes were due in no small part to the two world wars and their associated effects, notably post-war reconstruction and the on-going Cold War. As the century went on, there were more scientists - requiring more money to fund their research - occupying ever more niches in industry, academia, military and civil institutions. Combining the latest research on twentieth-century British science with insightful discussion of what it meant to govern - and govern with - science, this volume provides both an invaluable introduction to science in twentieth-century Britain for students and a fresh thematic focus on science and government for researchers interested in the histories of science and governance. This volume features a foreword from Sir John Beddington, UK Government Chief Scientific Adviser 2008-13.
