Book excerpt: The First and Second Books of Discipline were amongst the constitutional foundation documents of the Scottish Reformation, and for four and a half centuries have been relied on to guide the polity of Presbyterian churches around the world. Their scholarly editing and publication a generation ago helped to revive serious study in the Church's constitutional law; and this reprint makes very important material available in a time of immense organisational change in the Church. Rev Dr Marjory A MacLean Deputy Principal Clerk to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland

Book Synopsis Priorities for the Church by : Donald Macleod
Download or read book Priorities for the Church written by Donald Macleod and published by Christian Focus Publications. This book was released on 2003 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus promised that as long as the earth remains his church will continue, and it's a good job he did. When we survey the church and how it relates to the world we have to wonder why he would bother! The church is not the building, nor is it the structure of government, it is a body of believers. Christians make up the church and it is our responsibility to prayerfully think through how we can affect the situation, sitting idly by is no longer an option. As the church drifts along, splintered, distracted, all too willing to slip it theological moorings and often showing a remarkable lack of love, its influence on society dwindles - either becoming indistinguishable from the world or becoming so unrelated that is appears to be a relic of an entirely different era. Donald Macleod brings his customary flourish to this most pressing topic. His seemingly effortless ability to communicate complicated issues ensures that the message he conveys is clear.

Book Synopsis Mr Simson's Knotty Case by : Anne Skoczylas
Download or read book Mr Simson's Knotty Case written by Anne Skoczylas and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2001-01-19 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The issues involved in these trials included the right of universities to discipline their professors, the degree of political control over the appointment and methodology of teachers, the preservation of factional advantage through such appointments, and the nature of the relationship between a state church and the public institutions responsible for educating its clergy. Skoczylas shows that the effect of the Enlightenment on Scottish Calvinism, which required adaptation to new developments in theology and pedagogy, was an important sub-text to the trials: the compromise reached at the end of the second led indirectly to the first secession of ultra-orthodox ministers from the Church of Scotland. More significantly, the Church became increasingly open to innovative thought so that enlightened ministers of the latter half of the century could debate matters forbidden to Simson. Mr Simson's Knotty Case breaks new ground, offering the first analysis of many ecclesiastical and political sources. Skoczylas shows that although Simson was in many ways a conservative man, despite his innovative pedagogy, the liberalizing effects of his cases thrust Scotland from the obscurity of Covenanting orthodoxy into the clarity of the Enlightenment.
