Book Synopsis Lindop: A Family History by : John Barford Lindop
Download or read book Lindop: A Family History written by John Barford Lindop and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-09-25 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the various family legends says that two German brothers came to England with William the Conqueror and set up home at Gwersyllt near Wrexham which, like most legends, contains an element of truth. When the family first appears on the pages of recorded history, eventually to adopt the name of de Leyis (Lee) and variants, they were living in the hamlet of Calton near Edensor and Bakewell. Their house was in sight of Lindop Wood and from where Robert de Leyis, son of Henry de Leyis changed his name to de Lindop for reasons that remain a mystery. Clearly, he was the first to adopt that surname and therefore this book charts the Lindop Family name back to its origins. The author follows the family as it moved from Derbyshire to Wybunbury in Cheshire and then through that County to his own branch of the family which operated a draper's shop in Chester. He also traces the Lindops who were fishmongers in Liverpool and discovers other miscellaneous fragments of the family history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1982, Worldwide Family History is an essential reference and guide for the professional genealogist and the interested amateur alike. Concentrating on non-British genealogical problems, it sets out as succinctly as possible the way in which people of English speech but of foreign descent can begin tracing their ancestors. It is designed to be used throughout the English-speaking world, and especially by people of mixed European ancestry. The first part deals with the political and linguistic structure of Europe and includes chapters on genealogy in all European countries. The second part deals with colonial shipping in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the settlement of the Americas (including chapters on Spanish, Italian, Polish, German, French and Slav emigrants), and a record of the early settlement of Europeans in Australia, South Africa and New Zealand. There is also a chapter on heraldry as an aid to genealogical research. Contributors to the book include the internationally known genealogists—Margaret Audin; H. Jäger-Sunstenau; Conte G.G. Camajani; F. de Cadenas; Conde de Gaviria; Dr Artur Norton; Baron de Sao Roque; S. Kuczynski; M. M. Paszkiewicz; L. G. Pine; P. de V. B. Dewar; B. C. G. Brooks; and Professor W. Gordon East.

Book Synopsis History and Its Objects by : Peter N. Miller
Download or read book History and Its Objects written by Peter N. Miller and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-01 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weaving together literary and scholarly insights, History and Its Objects will prove indispensable reading for historians and cultural historians, as well as anthropologists and archeologists worldwide. — Nathan Schlanger, École nationale des chartes, Paris Cultural history is increasingly informed by the history of material culture—the ways in which individuals or entire societies create and relate to objects both mundane and extraordinary—rather than on textual evidence alone. Books such as The Hare with Amber Eyes and A History of the World in 100 Objects indicate the growing popularity of this way of understanding the past. In History and Its Objects, Peter N. Miller uncovers the forgotten origins of our fascination with exploring the past through its artifacts by highlighting the role of antiquarianism—a pursuit ignored and derided by modem academic history—in grasping the significance of material culture. From the efforts of Renaissance antiquarians, who reconstructed life in the ancient world from coins, inscriptions, seals, and other detritus, to amateur historians in the nineteenth century working within burgeoning national traditions, Miller connects collecting—whether by individuals or institutions—to the professionalization of the historical profession, one which came to regard its progenitors with skepticism and disdain. The struggle to articulate the value of objects as historical evidence, then, lies at the heart both of academic history-writing and of the popular engagement with things. Ultimately, this book demonstrates that our current preoccupation with objects is far from novel and reflects a human need to reexperience the past as a physical presence.

Book Synopsis The Land of the Seal People by : Duncan Williamson
Download or read book The Land of the Seal People written by Duncan Williamson and published by Birlinn Ltd. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No stories were more potent, more engaging, more subtle or profound than these half-animal, half-human tales of the sea. Time and time again listeners enthralled by Duncan Williamson's lore would ask him for the silkie tale. Duncan grew up with the seals, slept nights stranded by the tide in their colonies, heard countless stories from crofters, fishermen and travellers alike about the strange people who were related to the seal; the silkie stories magically link the two worlds, animal and human, sea and land. This new and expanded edition contains twenty-four stories, including thirteen that are previously unpublished, with a new introduction by Linda Williamson which examines the background of the West Highland belief in the seal people. The Land of the Seal People is a work of a master narrator, Scotland's greatest contemporary storyteller. The book is adult fiction of high intellectual and literary standards, and, as Scottish folk tales, suits children and adults alike. From the oral tradition of the West Coast, these stories are a vital part of Scotland's heritage.
