Book excerpt: What are the chances that your future could be accurately predicted in a book? ...or that you were destined to read this book at exactly this point in your life? ...or that God loved you so much that he made sure you would find just what you needed, just when you needed it--and it turns out he planted it in your path 20 centuries ago! Teaching pastor Doug Brendel offers Scripture-based predictions for your personal life as he walks through the apostle Paul's first epistle to Timothy. This study probes our everyday choices in a fresh, new way: How do I sort out clashing priorities? How has my thinking been "branded"? How do I choose the worthwhile battles? When do I cut off an argument? Am I "overdoing it" in some areas of my life? Who are my leaders, and why am I following them? And more

Book excerpt: This volume advances the scholarly discussion of Jeremiah via rigorous feminist and postcolonialist theorizing of texts and interpretive issues in that prophetic book. The essays here, by seasoned scholars of Jeremiah, offer significant traction on the biblical book's construction of the persona of Jeremiah and the subjectivity of Judah as subaltern; analysis of gendered imagery for the speaking subject in Jeremiah and for the Judean social body; exploration of rhetorics of imperialism and resistance; and theological implications of feminist-critical perspectives on YHWH and other deities represented in Jeremiah. Essays here deftly synthesize historical, literary, and ideological-critical insights in service of nuanced inquiry into Jeremiah as complex cultural production. The collection represents the growing edge of recent critical thinking on Jeremiah in the United States, Europe, and elsewhere. It should prove invaluable in shaping the parameters of the continuing scholarly conversation on the Book of Jeremiah.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He believes I’m his fated mate. He insists I’m a prophesied hero. My life depends on proving him wrong. I’m an assassin, forced into hiding after a job went sideways. Now I live among humans, trying desperately to hold to my identity as a sorceress even if I can’t use my magic. During a mission, a powerful dragon shifter strides into my life like he belongs whether I want him or not. Despite my efforts to get rid of him, my employers force me to take him as my partner. They claim I’m the Dragon Fae. My new partner knows because he’s the Dragon Fae’s fated mate…my mate. The Dragon Fae is a prophesied hero of myth and legend, and myths and legends always end badly. Everyone knows the Dragon Fae dies young and alone at the end of that story. I won’t lie and claim to be this hero. I’ll complete the mission we’re sent on without the Dragon Fae’s power and put this business to rest. The only thing standing in my way is my new parter. He’s convinced we can be together and cheat fate. I admit, his faith in me makes it difficult to resist him, but my life depends on proving him wrong. To escape this deadly prophecy I have to keep my heart locked away from this mysterious dragon shifter, but he knows too many of my secrets already, and I know none of his...including who he really is. The Dragon Fae series features a slow-burn fated mates romance, forced proximity with a dragon shifter who falls first, a kickass assassin for a heroine, a snarky cursed miniature dragon as a sidekick, and enough secrets to keep everyone guessing. This series is great for fans of Linsey Hall, Annabel Chase, and CN Crawford.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the second half of the seventeenth century the entire intellectual framework of educated Europe underwent a radical transformation. A secularized view of humanity and nature was replacing faith in the direct operation of God's will in the temporal world, while a growing confidence in human reason and the Scientific Revolution turned back the epistemological skepticism spawned by the Reformation. By focusing on the Dutch Collegiants, a radical Protestant group that flourished in Holland from 1620 to 1690, Andrew Fix explicates the mechanisms at work in this crucial intellectual transition from traditional to modern European worldview. Starting from Rijnsburg, near Leiden, the Collegiants spread over the course of the century to every major Dutch city. At the same time, their thinking evolved from a millenarian spiritualism influenced heavily by the sixteenth-century Radical Reformation to a philosophical rationalism similar to the ideas of Spinoza. Fix has taken on an important topic in the history of ideas: the circumstances under which natural reason came to be accepted as an autonomous source of truth for the individual conscience. He also has fresh and concrete things to say about the relationship between religion and science in early modern European history. Originally published in 1990. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There’s only one power big enough to help us survive perilous times. After reading this book, you will have the confidence to walk in the victory Christ died for and begin living exceedingly and abundantly beyond anything you ever could have hoped for or imagined. There is a power so great it can help you not only survive but thrive in this crazy world, a power that can give you joy and peace, result in miracles, and make you victorious no matter what. It’s a power that comes from the third member of the Godhead, the Holy Spirit. It’s the power that took the teachings of a young carpenter from Galilee and turned upside down the most ruthless empire of its era, overcoming the paganism that went with it. It's a power that seemed dormant for almost two millennia but has been restored to the church as was told in the Bible. And it’s available today to help you understand the future, have faith to believe for miracles, and know unspeakable peace and happiness no matter your circumstances. Spirit-Led Living in an Upside-Down World takes you on a journey to help you understand how you can experience this power and know the Holy Spirit intimately. After covering the work of the Holy Spirit for more than four decades as a journalist, Stephen E. Strang helps readers understand that power is there for the asking—even if others misuse or ignore it. It’s there to give you victory over the forces of evil, help you stand strong when the culture wants you to compromise, and give you the tools to prosper in body, soul, and spirit. When he was a young newspaper reporter, Strang experienced this power in a way “exceedingly abundantly above” all he could have asked or thought (Eph. 3:20), and you will too. This power will open your spiritual eyes to help you hear from God, deepen your prayer life, and explain the groanings that cannot be uttered. Sharing stories from his own experience and from dozens of modern heroes of the faith, Strang will uplift you and inspire you to connect with God in new, fresh ways; be a powerful influence on your family, friends, and community; deepen your faith so you can move mountains; learn to be led by the Spirit to uncover your heart’s deepest desires; and overcome challenges and fulfill your dreams and purpose in life. Spirit-Led Living in an Upside-Down World is not only one of the most important books you’ll ever read but also one of the most profound. It will reveal the most stunning secrets and truths behind this power—the power of God that is at work regardless of how upside down the world seems to get.

Book excerpt: Werecat: The Sim Ru Prophecy is the final installment of The Romance Reviews Readers’ Choice favorite, the Werecat series A fugitive from two murder investigations in New York City and a bizarre, big cat attack at a bank in Barbados, Jacks Dowd flees to South America to find the ringleader of a shifter terrorist organization deep in the Amazon. The world is on the brink of all-out war between shifters and humans, and Jacks needs to somehow broker a deal for peace. But a special U.S. intelligence agency emerges as a new, possibly even more dangerous enemy. Both the terrorists and the U.S. government will stop at nothing to get an arcane codex that could unleash an unstoppable threat to mankind or exterminate werecats everywhere. While Jacks dodges danger from both sides and decodes the ancient book, he’s left with the impossible choice of how to use it. This action-packed gay shapeshifter romance brings Andrew J. Peters' Werecat series to its stunning conclusion. Peters tells fans that his original Werecat romance was an experiment. He asked himself: What would a gothic paranormal romance story look like with gay men in prominent roles? Now, this Romance Review Readers Choice finalist reaches its apex, as Jacks Dowd makes peace with his Werecat nature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bethel Church in Redding, California, is one of the most popular and polarizing churches in America. Home to the award-winning Bethel Music label, its songs are among the most used in churches. Thousands of people visit the church each year, drawn by reports of miraculous healings, the manifestation of a glittering Glory Cloud, and other miracles. They’re convinced that the church is at the forefront of an end-time movement that is restoring miraculous power to the church-at-large and “bringing heaven to earth.” Yet others are concerned that Bethel has left the boundaries of Scripture and brought its followers into a dangerously speculative and experience-driven faith. They say that, in the name of training miracle workers, Bethel has introduced hazardous, perhaps even occultic, practices into the church. This has resulted in chaos, confusion, and damaged lives. In this book we examine the controversial teachings of the “Bethel Church Movement,” as it is called, which has transformed modern Christian practice, culture, and worship. We show its place in the broader New Apostolic Reformation, a worldwide movement of “apostles” and “prophets” intent on reconstructing the mission and the message of the Christian church.

Book excerpt: It is the year of the Great Conjunction, when the two most powerful planets, Jupiter and Saturn, align—an astrological phenomenon that occurs once every thousand years and heralds the death of one age and the dawn of another. The streets of London are abuzz with predictions of horrific events to come, possibly even the death of Queen Elizabeth. When several of the queen's maids are found dead, rumours of black magic abound. Elizabeth calls upon her personal astrologer, John Dee, and Giordano Bruno to solve the crimes. While Dee turns to a mysterious medium claiming knowledge of the murders, Bruno fears that something far more sinister is at work. But even as the climate of fear at the palace intensifies, the queen refuses to believe that the killer could be someone within her own court. Bruno must play a dangerous game: Can he allow the plot to progress far enough to give the queen the proof she needs without putting her, England, or himself in danger?

Book excerpt: "Nineteenth-century Latter-day Saints looked forward to apocalyptic events that would unseat corrupt governments across the globe but would particularly decimate the tyrannical government of the United States. Mormons turned to prophecies of divine deliverance by way of plagues, natural disasters, foreign invasions, American Indian raids, slave uprisings, or civil war unleashed on American cities and American people ... Blythe examines apocalypticism across the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints particularly as it would take shape in localized and personalized forms in the writings and visions of ordinary Latter-day Saints outside of the Church's leadership"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The writings of the prophets make up over a quarter of the Old Testament. But perhaps no other portion of the Old Testament is more misunderstood by readers today. For some, prophecy conjures up knotted enigmas, opaque oracles and terrifying visions of the future. For others it raises expectations of a plotted-out future to be reconstructed from disparate texts. And yet the prophets have imprinted the language of faith and imagination with some of its most sublime visions of the future - nations streaming to Zion, a lion lying with a lamb, and endlessly fruiting trees on the banks of a flowing river. We might view the prophets as stage directors for Israel's unfolding drama of redemption. Drawing inspiration from past acts in that drama and invoking fresh words from its divine author, these prophets speak a language of sinewed poetry, their words and images arresting the ear and detonating in the mind. For when Yahweh roars from Zion and thunders from Jerusalem, the pastures of the shepherds dry up, the crest of Carmel withers, and the prophetic word buffets those selling the needy for a pair of sandals. The Dictionary of the Old Testament: Prophets is the only reference book of its kind. Not only does it focus exclusively on the prophetic books; it also plumbs their imagery of mountains and wilderness, flora and fauna, temple and Zion. It maps and guides us through topics such as covenant and law, exile and deliverance, forgiveness and repentance, and the Day of the Lord. Here the nature of prophecy is searched out in its social, historical, literary and psychological dimensions as well as its synchronic spread of textual links and associations. And the formation of the prophetic books into their canonical collection, including the Book of the Twelve, is explored and weighed for its significance. Then too, contemporary approaches such as canonical criticism, conversation analysis, editorial/redaction criticism, feminist interpretation, literary approaches and rhetorical criticism are summed up and assayed. Even the afterlife of these great texts is explored in articles on the history of interpretation as well as on their impact in the New Testament.
