Book Synopsis Self And The Phenomenon Of Life: A Biologist Examines Life From Molecules To Humanity by : Ramon Lim
Download or read book Self And The Phenomenon Of Life: A Biologist Examines Life From Molecules To Humanity written by Ramon Lim and published by #N/A. This book was released on 2017-07-20 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'As an innovative treatment of scientific topics with philosophical undertones, this is an impressive work, Some may not be convinced by the arguments, but for scientists and philosophers alike the author presents a thesis worth exploring.'CHOICEThe book describes a common ground between the biology of life and the humanity of life without compromising either discipline. It attempts to bridge the gap between our 'two cultures' — the sciences and the humanities, as advocated by C P Snow fifty years ago. This book connects our meager existence to the entire living world and the universe, physically and spiritually, through the simple perspective of 'self,' being defined as a system that seeks its own perpetuation.
Book Synopsis The Nature of Order: The phenomenon of life by : Christopher Alexander
Download or read book The Nature of Order: The phenomenon of life written by Christopher Alexander and published by Nature of Order. This book was released on 2002 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Book Oneof this four-volume work, Alexander describes a scientific view of the world in which all space-matter has perceptible degrees of life, and establishes this understanding of living structures as an intellectual basis for a new architecture. He identifies fifteen geometric properties which tend to accompany the presence of life in nature, and also in the buildings and cities we make. These properties are seen over and over in nature and in the cities and streets of the past, but they have almost disappeared in the impersonal developments and buildings of the last hundred years. This book shows that living structures depend on features which make a close connection with the human self, and that only living structure has the capacity to support human well-being.

Download or read book Mortality and Morality written by Hans Jonas and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 1996-07-08 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hans Jonas, a pupil of Heidegger and a colleague of Hannah Arendt at the New School for Social Research, was one of the most prominent phenomenologists of his generation. This carefully chosen anthology of Jonas's shorter writings - on topics from Jewish philosophy to philosophy of religion to philosophy of biology and social philosophy - reveals their range without obscuring their central unifying thread: that as living, biological beings, we are also beings who die, and who must consider the implications for current and future ethical and social relations.
Book Synopsis The Science of Everyday Life by : Len Fisher
Download or read book The Science of Everyday Life written by Len Fisher and published by Skyhorse. This book was released on 2011-05-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientists are in the business of trying to understand the world. Exploring commonplace phenomena, they have uncovered some of nature’s deepest laws. We can in turn apply these laws to our own lives, to better grasp and enhance our performance in daily activities as varied as cooking, home improvement, sports—even dunking a doughnut! This book makes the science of the familiar a key to opening the door for those who want to know what scientists do, why they do it, and how they go about it. Following the routine of a normal day, from coffee and breakfast to shopping, household chores, sports, a drink, supper, and a bath, we see how the seemingly mundane can provide insight into the most profound scientific questions. Some of the topics included are the art and science of dunking; how to boil an egg; how to tally a supermarket bill; the science behind hand tools; catching a ball or throwing a boomerang; the secrets of haute cuisine, bath (or beer) foam; and the physics of sex. Fisher writes with great authority and a light touch, giving us an entertaining and accessible look at the science behind our daily activities.

Book Synopsis Disrupted Networks by : Bruce J. West
Download or read book Disrupted Networks written by Bruce J. West and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a lens through which modern society is shown to depend on complex networks for its stability. One way to achieve this understanding is through the development of a new kind of science, one that is not explicitly dependent on the traditional disciplines of biology, economics, physics, sociology and so on; a science of networks. This text reviews, in non-mathematical language, what we know about the development of science in the twenty-first century and how that knowledge influences our world. In addition, it distinguishes the two-tiered science of the twentieth century, based on experiment and theory (data and knowledge) from the three-tiered science of experiment, computation and theory (data, information and knowledge) of the twenty-first century in everything from psychophysics to climate change. This book is unique in that it addresses two parallel lines of argument. The first line is general and intended for a lay audience, but one that is scientifically sophisticated, explaining how the paradigm of science has been changed to accommodate the computer and large-scale computation. The second line of argument addresses what some consider the seminal scientific problem of climate change. The authors show how a misunderstanding of the change in the scientific paradigm has led to a misunderstanding of complex phenomena in general, and the causes of global warming in particular.
