Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science of Light This book is intended as a companion to that on Radiation previously published in this same series, and the first three chapters in that book should be read before commencing this. Light plays such an important part in the life of man that it is only natural that speculation as to its nature and investigation of its laws should have begun very early. But although this is true, yet the ancients seem to have been exceedingly slow in the invention and construction of optical instruments, and to have been completely innocent of any reasonable optical theory. All the refinements both of construction and theory have happened well within the last three centuries. Metallic mirrors are, of course, very ancient. Many of them have been recovered from ancient Egyptian tombs, and they are very distinctly mentioned in the books of Exodus and Job. Burning-glasses in the form of globes of water or of glass were also known at a very early time, Aristophanes mentioning them in a comedy of his which was performed in 424 B.C. The most reasonable of the early theories was also one of the very earliest. Pythagoras, who died somewhere about 520 B.C., considered the sensation of sight to be caused by particles continuously shot out from luminous surfaces and entering the pupil of the eye. This is exactly the theory which Newton developed so brilliantly over 2000 years later, but the other theories were very fantastic and meaningless. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of Light IN undertaking the preparation of this fourth edition I felt, both on account of my respect for its late author and because the book has been so successful, that I ought to leave untouched, as far as possible, the main body of the text. Accordingly in this respect changes have only been made where such were necessary, in order to correct the few errors or inaccuracies which I have noticed, or to which I have seen attention directed occasionally in scientific papers. I have not considered it necessary to mark these alterations in any special way, but I gladly acknowledge here the assistance which such references have given me. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Light This book is intended for students who have been through a first year's physics course and who are proceeding further with the study of light. It differs from other books on light by a more systematic treatment, also by dealing with the full s00pe of the subject and including the results of recent investigations. A good knowledge of elementary mathematics is assumed. The calculus is used, but I hope that the results Obtained by its aid will be intelligible to those who cannot follow the inter mediate steps, and in any case the greater part of the book is free from it. Of the 328 figures more than '270 have been specially drawn for the book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lecture Notes on Light If the importance of having good notes is once accepted, the question then arises as to the form that they should take. Should they be written or printed notes? For a good many years notes on Physics were dictated to the boys at Gresham's School. It was found, however, that this took up a considerable amount of valuable time, which could be saved by having the notes printed and copies supplied to the boys. The result has been a gain of fifty per cent. In the amount of ground covered. At the same time it has been found that the subject matter has been acquired by the boys just as well as through the dictated notes, perhaps even better. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Light In revising this work I have made use of various notes jotted down from time to time on my own copy, mainly as the result of questions asked, or of difficulties pointed out, by students who were reading it with care. Suggestions of this kind I have found to be almost always of value, as they tend to make the book better suited to the wants of the class of readers for whom in particular it was designed. The sections dealing with the theory and graphical representation of colours have been considerably enlarged, mainly from the investigations of Clerk-Maxwell and from a recent paper by Lord Rayleigh. One large addition, only, has been made to the book. It deals with what is commonly known as Gauss' method of treating approximately the optical properties of a system of media bounded by spherical surfaces whose centres are in one line. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wonder Book of Light Light, though one of the most difficult of all the natural forces to explain thoroughly, contains Within it so many wonders that it can be made attractive to young and old alike. The author has not hesitated, in either this or the other Wonder Books, to employ freely a few of the old, old fairy stories for illustrating some especially difficult point. It is his experience in the teaching of the natural sciences to the young, that the more unusual or out-of-the-way the illustrations employed, the greater the chance of their producing a marked effect on the mind. Insofar as the application of these data are concerned the author's Viewpoint is expressed in the following: 'he who has learned the science of light, shade, and color, who has learned how to observe and to record them, and who has learned to manipulate them to produce various effects, has learned the means by which achievements may be attained. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Light Side of Science Carbonic acid gas and its Story - Mechanisms of breathing - Gills and lungs - Their respective functions in fishes. The fact that our chests rise and fall fifteen or sixteen times a minute in the act of respiration or breathing is so familiar that it almost escapes popular recognition through its practically auto matic continuous nature. Breathing is one of those actions, which, while absolutely essential for the maintenance of life, and which, performed for the most part unconsciously, yet lie somewhat under the control of the will. Physiologists call breathing a secondary automatic action, in order to distinguish it from those functions of the body with which we cannot interfere. The duties of digestion, the making of bile, the formation of saliva, the flow of tears, the expansion or contraction of the blood vessels - are acts which proceed independently of our will and consciousness, and they are undoubtedly performed all the more perfectly in that we have no need to concern ourselves about them at all. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Six Lectures on Light: Delivered in America in 1872-1873 During their delivery, the experimental facts were before the audience, forming Visible links in the logic of each discourse. Here, by the use of plain language, I have endeavoured to reproduce distinct images of these facts, and to show them in their proper relations. With a View to this end I have sought to raise the Wave-theory of Light to adequate clearness in the reader's mind, and to show its power as an organizer of optical phenomena. Volumes could be written on the evolutionary side of the problem and the structure and uses of luminous organs. These questions can only be touched upon. Neither is it my purpose to discuss the ultimate cause of the light, whether due to vibration Of electrons or to other causes. That problem must be left to the physicist, although it is highly probable that a study of animal light will give important information regarding the nature of light in general, and no theory of light can be adequate which fails to take into account the extraordi nary powers Of luminous animals. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principle of Relativity in the Light of the Philosophy of Science That was exactly Bradley's case as set forth in his essay written in I 727, one; hundred and eighty-five years ago, and thus he became the forerunner of the relativity physicists. To state it in other terms, Bradley correctly solved a problem which in our days led to the formulation of the principle of relativity, and he did so without men tioning this theory, yea without feeling the need of formu lating it. He Simply took it for granted that he had in this case to consider the motion of the earth that served him as a reference point - the place of his observations.
