Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Science in Everyday Life: Some of Nature's Giant Forces When you have read through this book you will have learned something of the great part that science takes in the everyday life of this busy world of ours. Make all the models you can and carry out the little experiments at the ends Of the chapters. Most of the models can be made from the very simplest, com monest things which every boy can get for himself. If you are lucky enough to have a set of tools and some strip wood, you will be able to make your models with a much better finish than your less fortunate companions. A little paint or pastel Often converts a model that looks rough into quite a nice looking article. If you can find a better way of working out the idea in a model, by all means do it in your own way, for you will thus become an inventor - a humble one perhaps at first, but yet an inventor. It is surprising how much real scientific knowledge can be picked up in the way we have suggested to you. You will find that after a little practice in model-making, it will come easy to you, and things that appear difficult at first will soon become quite simple. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mechanics of Daily Life Some apology seems necessary for the production of another treatise on a subject so well-worn as Mechanics. The present work, however, makes no attempt at the mathematical treatment generally adopted. It aims rather at using the subject as a means of scientific training, and as an illustration of the method of examining Nature by reasoning and experiment. It appeals to that large class of people in all stations of life who have not the training necessary for the enjoyment of Mathematical Gymnastics, but yet take keen interest in the purely experimental side of science. The mathematical side of the question has therefore been dispensed with, only the simplest arithmetical examples being admitted where reference to figures was unavoidable. The book is in the main the substance of a course of Oxford University Extension Lectures, delivered in various small towns in Devonshire in the Spring of 1891. The course was one of several, given under the auspices of the County Council, in their pioneer experiment of providing University Extension Teaching for rural districts, in connection with the Government grant towards Technical Instruction. The experience gained in the lectures has been of great service in the compilation of the work, and the lecture method has been to a great extent retained, as specially suited to the end in view. Book excerpt: A Turing Award-winning computer scientist and statistician shows how understanding causality has revolutionized science and will revolutionize artificial intelligence "Correlation is not causation." This mantra, chanted by scientists for more than a century, has led to a virtual prohibition on causal talk. Today, that taboo is dead. The causal revolution, instigated by Judea Pearl and his colleagues, has cut through a century of confusion and established causality -- the study of cause and effect -- on a firm scientific basis. His work explains how we can know easy things, like whether it was rain or a sprinkler that made a sidewalk wet; and how to answer hard questions, like whether a drug cured an illness. Pearl's work enables us to know not just whether one thing causes another: it lets us explore the world that is and the worlds that could have been. It shows us the essence of human thought and key to artificial intelligence. Anyone who wants to understand either needs The Book of Why.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Science of Common Life The value of an introduction to the scientific method in the School training of both sexes is now fully recognised. There is still some difference of opinion, however, as to how girls can best be taught to appreciate the value of experiment and deduction in the endeavour to understand the forces of Nature. Fortunately, we believe, the idea gains ground that there are no more suitable means than the ordinary operations and practices of the household to illustrate physical and chemical laws. Adopting the general trend of the recent syllabus of the Board of Education, though in no sense slavishly following its details, we have attempted to make students familiar with those broad principles of science without which the intelligent guidance of the domestic economy is impossible. That is what we shall do in this book. We shall study the seven things mentioned in the first sentence. We Shall study the conditions that are necessary for our own lives, and this will help us a great deal in finding out how we ought to live. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Where Is Science Going? What has led them to devote their lives to the pur suit of science? That question is difficult to answer and could never be answered in a simple categorical way. Personally I am inclined to agree with Schopenhauer in thinking that one of the strongest motives that lead people to give their lives to art and science is the urge to flee from everyday life, with its drab and deadly dullness, and thus to unshackle the chains of one's own transient desires, which supplant one another in an interminable succession so long as the mind is fixed on the horizon of daily environment. But to this negative motive a positive one must be added. Human nature always has tried to form for itself a simple and synoptic image of the surrounding world. In doing this it tries to construct a picture which will give some sort of tangible expression to what the human mind sees in nature. That is what the poet does. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biology and Human Life It takes account further of another tendency in our current life, namely, the rapid extension of secondary-school opportuni ties to new population groups. The high schools now receive increasing numbers of boys and girls whose interests and aspira tions are radically different from those of earlier generations of pupils. The high school is no longer primarily or chiefly a college-preparatory institution. More and more of our students are concerned with the concrete and the practical rather than with the abstract and theoretical. Boys and girls who look for ward to an early entrance upon occupational activities and the responsibilities of earning and spending money have as much need for the study of biology as have those who plan to go to college or the professional schools. Even among these last there are very many for whom the subject can be most interestingly and most profitably developed in terms of our everyday affairs rather than in terms of academic analysis. This book seeks to carry out this principle so far as science is concerned. We are living in the midst of a great scientific age. Applications of science more and more dominate our life, and they will continue to do so in ever-increasing degree. Any sane system of education must see to it that boys and girls living in the midst of these applications, which form such an important part of their everyday life, are educated in terms of this environment, in order that they may better appreciate it and adapt themselves to it. This book is an attempt to make clear to boys and girls answers to some of the ques /tions naturally arising in their minds concerning the com mon applications of science. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Science of Human Life Thus, of those foims of mattei which in chemistry are at present considered elements, different aggregations of the same molecules make substances not only of entiiely ditierent natures, but of propemes as different as those of aquafortis and the ba! My air which we breathe; of sugar and vinegar; otcha1coal and diamond. And thus again, by differently arranging the same molecules of matter, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and other colors and tints are produced; and in like manner, are formed the most flagrant and most offensive odor; and the different qualities of sweet and sour and bitter, etc. And there are reasons for believing that light and heat, and electricity and magnetism, instead of being essentially different substances, are but the results of particular aggregations or arrangements and conditions of the same primary atoms of matter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Every-Day Reasoning: Or the Science of Inductive Logic His work is offered to teacher's as an aid in setting before their pupils the principles of Inductive Logic. As our reasoning is inductive rather than deductive in daily life, it is important that the young should know at least the methods and tests. No great claim to originality is made, as no effort was put forth to attain it. Everything within reach has been examined, in order to gain additional light; and much that was desirable was left out, in order to keep the book within such bounds that it could be easily mastered by average students in a single session, Some important matters, and some especially clear illustrations, have been repeated ln different connections, in the belief that repetition aided the memory. The design in preparing the work was not merely to offer a text-book to schools, but also to pro vide a convenient manual for men and women in their pro fessional and daily life, wherein they might find suggestions for making their experiments, reaching their conclusions, and testing the correctness of the same. Under the title every-day reasoning, an outline of the tliought has been very frequently delivered as a lecture; and the favor-n able reception accorded to the subject in that form has led. To the hope that greater usefulness would be attained by its publication in this form. Of course, the difference of cir cumstance and aim will account for the difference of style.
