Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Schools of England and Germany This sketch of the schools of England and Germany was prepared with two objects in view: - (1) To indicate the development of public opinion with regard to education, and the form, which legislation assumed in solving the educational problems which pressed upon public attention; and (2) to show what courses of study educators abroad deemed the most suitable for the different grades of schools, and what machinery was used in carrying on such courses by those responsible for the administration of educational affairs. This involved the consideration of the different grades of schools, the accommodation of pupils, the training and licensing of teachers, inspection, State aid to education, etc. In preparing this sketch I have drawn very freely upon the reports of other writers. In many cases I have used the language of these writers without indicating in every case the quotations I have made, so as not to disturb the continuity of my narrative. Every reference to practical work, however, which a visitor could see for himself, whether the language is my own or not, I have verified by personal observation. Official regulations are given in extenso in appendices for the benefit of those more immediately concerned in the administration of our school system. Book excerpt: Excerpt from European Schools: Or What I Saw in the Schools of Germany, France, Austria and Switzerland Anglo-saxon teachers will read what is said of the great Herbartian movement in educational theory with wonder and curiosity. The idea of concentric instruo tion, with Robinson Crusoe for the center of interest; the glimpses of earnest and thorough discussions of prin ciples and practice in the light of the subtle psychology of Herbart, the counter-movement of the opposing school of philosophy - what singular phenomena in the history of education, and how suggestive of the originality and thoroughness of the German mind! Instructive glances at the education of women for teachers in this book make us conscious of the consider able distance that separates our system of educational management from that of the Continent of Europe. Does it seem likely that the latter has begun to move on in the direction-we have taken, and that it will follow us in giv ing higher education to girls, and afterward place women in charge of its schools as extensively as Americans have done? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Educational Comparisons, or Remarks on Industrial Schools in England, Germany and Switzerland The manufacturing town of Keighley is representative in many respects of a number of towns in the country which are rapidly rising in wealth, population and in uence. Its staple industries are - the spinning of worsted yarns, the weaving of mixed fabrics, and the making of machinery and tools of various kinds. These, and such industries as the building trades, which ourish side by side with them, give employ ment to nearly the whole of the population, and the demand for labour extends not more to the able-bodied men than to the women and children. In consequence of the compulsory powers of the Factory Acts, it may be said that a great proportion of the present generation of the inhabitants has enjoyed the advantage of an attendance at school, at least between the ages of eight and thirteen. We may, therefore, anticipate that the elementary instruction of the people of this town will be found, on examination, to be more general and effective than in most English towns of the same size, but dependent upon different industries. Perhaps the local con ditions may be expected to prove less favourable to the higher education given in good English Secondary Schools. As an evidence of the general intelligence of the town, the Mechanics' Institute and Schools of Science and Art are. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of School Organization: A Comparative Study Chiefly Based on the Systems of the United States, England, Germany and France Seventh: Centralized administration relieves school officers of the continual struggle over curriculum and courses of study to which such a large proportion of their time must otherwise be given, and leaves them free to carry on the great work of teaching and to develop methods of instruction to a high order of perfection. This is substantially illustrated in Germany. Nowhere is there a more intelligent and active body of teachers than in the various German states. Germany has been the great home of pedagogy, whither, only a few years ago, all students from the United States who wished to study education were obliged to go. We may fairly ask the question whether the great development in methods of education which has taken place in Germany would have produced so many valuable re sults if the teachers, and particularly the principals of schools, had been obliged to consume a large part of their time in the discussion of the curriculum and of purely administrative ques tions. And in 1721 Reaumur presented to the Academy of Science a Memoir in which in reference to this fear he says: 'the feeling of uneasiness is general, and it is perhaps only too well founded. The interests of the State demand at the least that the quantity of wood should not be diminished while the consumption is being increased. For this reason more space than usual has been assigned to England and less to Germany, for although most of the current educational philosophy had its origin in the latter country, it is chiefly in the former that the earlier history of the American schools is to be traced. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Secondary Education in the Nineteenth Century The following pages deal only with England and Wales. Though foreign education exercised considerable influence in this country, the nineteenth century was far more national than the sixteenth. The English Renaissance re presented the effect of a self-conscious civilisation on a people which felt the inferiority of its own culture, whereas in the nineteenth century Englishmen, in consequence of their industrial supremacy, were led to an undue deprecia tion of other nations. English education in Tudor times can only be treated as a branch of the tree whose roots were in Italy: from whatever quarter the seed of our nine teenth century education was brought, it had a life which was all its own. Moreover, the translation of ideas into practice followed quite different lines in England and abroad. In France and Germany educational systems were created by the State; in England institutions grew up with a minimum of State intervention. Comparative edu cation is a study of the greatest importance, but it is based on the recognition of a difference in educational development in different countries rather than on an attempt to find a unity between them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Education in France, 1891 OR several years I have observed a very progressive spirit at work in the schools of France. It was, however, during the Paris Exhibition of 1889, and the International Congress of Primary Education, which was opened on the l0th of August of that year, at the Sorbonne, by the Minister of Public Instruction, that I fully realised the great activity which prevailed in the French Educational Department. That activity and its results, as illustrated in the Educational Section of the Exhibition, won the warm admiration of the delegates sent to the Con gress, on the invitation of the French Govern ment, by the principal States of the old and the new world, including England and Germany. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The School Question From a Catholic Point of View There is no argument against the system. What is done in England, Germany, and Canada should not be impossible in the United States. In all these countries denominational schools are recognized. No unanswerable argument has ever been adduced which destroys the justice of the Catholic claim in the matter of education. There is a just solution of the difficulty. Catholics are not clamoring for what is unjust or unreasonable. The Catholic school system cannot be ignored by the state. It is a fact, a mighty fact, and one that has come to stay. The Catholic Church is contending for a principle, from which M she can never recede. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
