Book excerpt: A generalized investigation of wave scattering from rough surfaces yields an expression for mean scattered power flux which is the spatial Fourier transform of the product of three transfer functions: The optical transfer function (OTF) of the propagating medium; The joint characteristic function of the surface roughness; A coherence involving the mean surface and the wave profile. The results are applicable to rough surfaces which do not have rms slopes greater than a few degrees. The solution is applied to laser scattering from aluminum and titanium airplane surfaces where the medium is the clear atmosphere. Proficorder tracing of sample rough surfaces reveals independent roughness and waviness components normally distributed with Gaussian (isotropic) autocorrelation. (Author).
