Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Economics - Job market economics, grade: C, Lillehammer University College, language: English, abstract: Even in a time as we experience now, where a lot of companies becoming bankrupt, it is more important than ever, to have a look on those people who are directly affected by the economic crisis. These are especially people who lost their job in consequence of cutbacks in manpower or bankruptcy. It is interesting to see how the European countries are working together to decrease the aftermaths of the present crisis. In this essay I will analyse in which way the German and the Norwegian Social system works, especially the facilities for unemployed people. And I will try to show the historical and organisational differences of both systems. In this reason I will give a short overview over the different "welfare regimes" in Europe first and describe how to classify them into three big groups, according to Gøsta Esping-Andersen, who worked a lot in this field of study. Afterwards I will have a look on the historical and organisational design of the social system of one of the world's richest countries - Norway. In point 3b I will describe how Norway manages the unemployment and what kind of benefits unemployed persons will get. After that, in point 4, I will examine the case of Germany, as the birthplace of the welfare state in Europe. As I divided the chapter about Norway into one historical part and one part about the benefits for unemployed persons, I did it with this part as well. At the end of this essay I will make a short conclusion, in which I will discuss the pros and cons of both systems and present, why it is so difficult to find the right balance in the level of unemployment benefits.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About 3% of GNP is spent on government labor market programs in Sweden, compared to 2 % in Germany and less than 0.5% in the U.S. In Sweden these programs include extensive job training, mobility bonuses and unemployment benefits. Reviews of previous literature suggest that job training programs have small effects on wages and re-employment in Sweden, but precise inferences are difficult because of small sample sizes. The authors also investigate alternative reasons for the stability of the Beveridge Curve in Sweden, and compare regional evolutions of employment and unemployment in Sweden and the U.S. Lastly a cross-country analysis is presented showing that the extent of a country's active labor market program is positively associated with the national unemployment rate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contributions to female economic thought have come from prolific scholars, leading social reformers, economic journalists and government officials along with many other women who contributed only one or two works to the field. It is perhaps for this reason that a comprehensive bibliographic collection has failed to appear, until now. This innovative book brings together the most comprehensive collection to date of references to women’s economic writing from the 1770s to 1940. It includes thousands of contributions from more than 1,700 women from the UK, the US and many other countries. This bibliography is an important reference work for systematic inquiry into questions of gender and the history of economic thought. This volume is a valuable resource and will interest researchers on women's contributions to economic thought, the sociology of economics, and the lives of female social scientists and activist-authors. With a comprehensive editorial introduction, it fills a long-standing gap and will be greeted warmly by scholars of the history of economic thought and those involved in feminist economics.

Book excerpt: Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden face similar problems of integrating large groups of immigrants, especially low-educated ones from outside the EU, into their labour markets. In this volume, researchers from across the Nordic Region analyse how labour market integration of immigrants can be promoted. Education policy, active labour market policy, social benefit policy and wage policy are analysed. A key conclusion is that no single policy is likely to suffice. Instead, various policies have to be combined. The exact policy mix must depend on evaluations of the trade-offs with other policy objectives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Deal: A Global History provides a radically new interpretation of a pivotal period in US history. The first comprehensive study of the New Deal in a global context, the book compares American responses to the international crisis of capitalism and democracy during the 1930s to responses by other countries around the globe-not just in Europe but also in Latin America, Asia, and other parts of the world. Work creation, agricultural intervention, state planning, immigration policy, the role of mass media, forms of political leadership, and new ways of ruling America's colonies-all had parallels elsewhere and unfolded against a backdrop of intense global debates.By avoiding the distortions of American exceptionalism, Kiran Klaus Patel shows how America's reaction to the Great Depression connected it to the wider world. Among much else, the book explains why the New Deal had enormous repercussions on China; why Franklin D. Roosevelt studied the welfare schemes of Nazi Germany; and why the New Dealers were fascinated by cooperatives in Sweden-but ignored similar schemes in Japan.Ultimately, Patel argues, the New Deal provided the institutional scaffolding for the construction of American global hegemony in the postwar era, making this history essential for understanding both the New Deal and America's rise to global leadership.
