Book Synopsis Saint Among Savages by : Francis Xavier Talbot
Download or read book Saint Among Savages written by Francis Xavier Talbot and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Saint among Savages tells the remarkable story of St. Isaac Jogues, a French Jesuit who was killed by Mohawks while serving as a missionary in New France. Coming from a upper middle class life in Orleans, he knew from an early age that he wanted to be a priest and serve abroad as a missionary to risk his life in order to save souls. Along with several others, collectively known as the North American Martyrs, he followed his dreams and met death in the American wilderness. Living with the Huron people in what is now Ontario, he was captured by Mohawk warriors and tortured and held captive for over a year. He escaped back to France with help from the Dutch in New York, and remarkably insisted on going back to New France, even though he knew what he might be facing. Besides Jogues' life there is also a lot of material about the lives and customs of the Native American peoples who lived along the St. Lawrence River.

Book excerpt: When I was ten, my father indoctrinated me into the family. A brotherhood who would fight, protect, and give their lives for one another. A club whose ties ran thicker than blood, murkier than the dirt and grime that tainted my soul. Stronger than the bonds that connected me to my own family. A band of brothers, where loyalty was kept and paid in a currency of blood. When I was twenty-seven, I betrayed that brotherhood. I've spent every day since running, avoiding paying back that debt. My name is Daniel Johnson. I have betrayed everyone I ever loved. And I'll betray her too. This is my story-if you're screwed up enough to want to read it. Warning: KICK contains graphic violence, profanity, drug use, and explicit sexual situations of a taboo nature. Intended for an 18+ audience only. Not intended for pussies.

Book Synopsis The Savage and Modern Self by : Robbie Richardson
Download or read book The Savage and Modern Self written by Robbie Richardson and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2018-01-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Savage and Modern Self examines the representations of North American "Indians" in novels, poetry, plays, and material culture from eighteenth-century Britain. Author Robbie Richardson argues that depictions of "Indians" in British literature were used to critique and articulate evolving ideas about consumerism, colonialism, "Britishness," and, ultimately, the "modern self" over the course of the century. Considering the ways in which British writers represented contact between Britons and "Indians," both at home and abroad, the author shows how these sites of contact moved from a self-affirmation of British authority earlier in the century, to a mutual corruption, to a desire to appropriate perceived traits of "Indianess." Looking at texts exclusively produced in Britain, The Savage and Modern Self reveals that "the modern" finds definition through imagined scenes of cultural contact. By the end of the century, Richardson concludes, the hybrid Indian-Brition emerging in literature and visual culture exemplifies a form of modern, British masculinity.

Book excerpt: REGARDLESS OF OUR NAME, WE ARE NO SAINTS. LUCKILY, THE WOMEN WE LOVE ARE AS WICKED AS WE ARE. LENNOX SAINT I am who I am for a reason. The monster the world sees when they look at me was born twenty years ago to protect my brothers from the same fate I endured on my sixteenth birthday. After that night, I locked myself away until the night I met Sloane. She was both forbidden and everything I’ve ever wanted all wrapped into one, but I wasn’t the only one who loved her. In the end, she made her choice, and it wasn’t me—or so I thought. Now that I know the truth, I’m taking my life back piece by piece, even if I have to carve it out of the flesh of anyone who stands in my way. Sloane is mine, and I will die on this hill—but not before everyone else dies first. SLOANE PENNER I loved two men once. I made a choice, but the man I chose didn’t choose me back—or so I thought. When a secret I didn’t know I had comes to light, my life as I knew it ends in a flash. Now I’m a pawn in a game with no rules, and I refuse to play the part I’ve been handed. The only way to win is to be the queen, and I’m taking the throne to protect my son. I’ve lost too much, and I’ve had enough. I will burn this vicious empire to the ground, and from its ashes, I will rise. * Savage Saint is the fourth and final book in the Vicious Empire dark romance family saga series.
Book Synopsis The Saint's Life and the Senses of Scripture by : Ann W. Astell
Download or read book The Saint's Life and the Senses of Scripture written by Ann W. Astell and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2024-07-15 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through close examination of ancient, medieval, and modern Lives of the saints, Ann W. Astell demonstrates how the historical transformation of hagiography as a genre correlates with similar changes in biblical studies. Christian hagiography flourished from the fourth to the fifteenth centuries, illuminating the gospel through the overlapping forms of exempla and vita. Originally, the Lives of the saints were understood as hermeneutical extensions of the Bible—God authors the saint, just as God authors the divinely inspired scriptures. During the medieval period, a sense of dual authorship between God and the cooperating saint developed, paralleling the Scholastic impulse to assign greater agency to the human writers of scripture. Then, in the sixteenth century, powerful new anxieties about historical truth pushed hagiography aside for biography, its successor. Drawing on her expertise in the history of Christianity and biblical exegesis, Astell convincingly shows how this radical shift in hagiography’s status—the loss of the literal, allegorical, tropological, and anagogical senses of the Lives—serves as a bellwether for modern biblical reception.
