Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sanitation, Water Supply and Sewage Disposal of Country Houses In the second part detailed advice is given as to how to procure a satisfactory water supply. The sources of water, the various modes of raising it, the storage in reservoirs, elevated tanks or underground pressure tanks, and finally water distribution, are dwelt on at length and illustrated by actual examples from the author's engineering practicer This part of the book is the outcome of a number of lectures given recently by the author before the Civil Engineering Section and the Engineering Society of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. There are few indeed but will admit that a complete water system for the farm is highly desirable; but many are deterred because of the expense involved. Many improvements may be made, however, each as safeguarding the well from pollution, inetalling an hydraulic ram, septic tank, gravity system, etc., which are not very expensive. And when the farmer is able to do a good deal of the work himself the coat is reduced to. A point where thousands can aflord the installations. Manydillcrcnt systems and devices, or modifications oi use, may also be used according to local requirements and the peculiar circumstances of each case. With a prac tical working knowledge of the principles of farm water supply, water systems, equipment and sewage disposal, few indeed who have impure well water and are without household and stable water conveniences but can make improvements of a most beneficial nature and at a cost which they can aflord to pay. They are not so much intended for the use of those advanced in Sanitary Science or the details of Civil Engineering, as for those of the general public who are interested in the management of estates and country mansions, where the benefits of efficient water supply and sanitation should be specially appreciated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Disposal of Sewage: Of Isolated Country Houses The latter can be applied with a mechanism similar to the one used in earth closets, and it is claimed that only about one-fourth the quantity will be needed. As charcoal is rather expensive this is an important consideration. Some also claim that removal need not be so frequent in the case of charcoal closets, but this is, at best, a doubt ful advantage. In cottages, or suburban residences of somewhat more pretension, the earth closet is sometimes located, for conveniences sake, in an ex tension of the cottage, and it then usually becomes desirable to have also a somewhat more convenient method of disposal of the slop water, which would avoid exposure of the housewife or servant to the inclemencies of the weather. This may be secured by arranging a properly ventilated and trapped waste-plpe - a pipe two inches diame ter is plenty large enough - to carry the waste from the kitchen sink, the laundry tub, and wherever this is provided for, from the bathtub, into a small receiving tank, located outside of the house, and placed below the depth to which frost usually penetrates. This tank may be a plain wooden box, or an earthen or iron tank, or finally a tank built of brickwork. It may be emptied in the plainest kind of an arrangement by hand, or else it may be discharged by an automatic device, such as a siphon, a tumbler tank, or other mechanical appliance. It may become useful, even in the case of small houses, to build some sort of a grease trap to prevent the grease from being discharged and finally clogging the small absorption pipes. It is, of course, assumed that the general topography of the lot is' favorable to such an arrangement, in other words, that there is not a s10pe from the garden, or absorption field, toward the house, in which case disposal by gravity becomes impossible. If the earth closet is placed inside of a dwelling the same precautions should be observed which are taken in the case of water-closets. The ventilation of the apartment is an important matter, and should receive careful attention. As a rule, it is better to locate an earth closet in an isolated or detached part of the cottage. While an earth closet is inferior to the best water-closet, I have no hesitation in pronouncing it, if well taken care of, superior to many water-closets as usually arranged and kept. Book excerpt: Excerpt from House Drainage and Water Service in Cities, Villages, and Rural Neighborhoods: With Incidental Consideration of Causes Affecting the Healthfulness of Dwellings For several years the writer has conducted an extensive cor respondence with plumbers, builders, architects and others interested in the mechanics of hygiene, growing out of the dis cussion in Mtal Worker of practical questions pertaining to plumbing and sanitary engineering. From this correspond ence, as well as from a careful study of the literature of the subject, he learned that a need existed for a comprehensive elementary treatise on the theory and practice of plumbing which was not met by any work in the market. The idea of an attempt to supply this want did not at first suggest itself, however, as continuous and exacting professional engagements seemed to leave no time for book-making. During the winter of 1874 - 55 the writer had the honor of reading two papers be fore the Public Health Association of New York, both on topics connected with house drainage, which were so favorably received by the plumbing trade as to suggest the propriety of revising them for republication in pamphlet form. The work thus begun gradually expanded, until it assumed the proportions of a book, and it was then deemed advisable to still further extend its scape to include the whole subject of house drainage and water service. It is perhaps only just to the professional reader to say that this book is not intended as a contribution to the literature of sanitary engineering. It takes up the subjects of drainage and water supply where the engineer commonly leaves them, and treats almost exclusively of subjects in which householders and those connected with the house-building trades are directly and immediately interested. On the other hand, it does not claim to be a workshop manual. There is little in the simple manipulations of the plumber's art t? Call for explanation. The plumbers as a class need theoretical instruction chiefly, surnoa's preface. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sanitary Engineering With Respect to Water-Supply and Sewage Disposal The correct form for masonry reservoir -dams exposed to a consider able water-pressure was determined, about the middle of last century, by careful mathematical calculations, carried out by a French engineer, in accordance with which the F urens darn was erected in 1861 - 1866, as mentioned on page 142, and has proved perfectly stable, and since which time several other high masonry dams have been constructed on similar lines, with equally satisfactory results; whereas, according to the conclusions drawn from the above experiments, those dams are unstable, are exposed to tensional strains reaching between 5 and to tons per square foot, and are subjected to shearing stresses far in excess of anything imagined. Turning now to the failure of masonry dams, the Austin dam in Texas, shown in section on page 146, should, according to the above theory, have failed by an opening at its toe under vertical tensional strains, and then have turned over; whereas, on the contrary, the darn was pushed bodily downstream in an upright posi tion by the horizontal water-pressure. The Bouzey dam also, in the first instance, and the gros-bois darn were pushed slightly forward by the water-pressure. Dock walls, moreover, do not fail by vertical dislocations in front, or by overturning if the toe rests on a solid foundation but they are pushed forward in an upright position by the pressure at the back. Unless any new theory, with regard to the stresses on masonry dams and their stability, can be proved to be more in accordance with the actual results of experience, especially in the case of failures, than the theory on which the designs of the principal masonry dams have been based during the last forty years, and have successfully borne the test in actual practice, the new theory cannot reasonably be accepted in preference to the old one; and whenever a theory, however authoritatively advanced, is evidently at variance with actual occurrences, it may safely be disregarded.
