Book excerpt: The Old Library of St John's College, Cambridge is home to a hugely important collection of printed books, manuscripts, photographs, maps, furniture, busts, paintings and other artefacts, the work of writers, craftsmen and artists active across more than one thousand years. The Library Treasures of St John's College, Cambridge offers a lavishly illustrated introduction to the diversity and richness of that collection. It demonstrates something particularly important about St John's College Library, and about libraries in many other Cambridge Colleges: that besides meeting the academic needs of present-day Fellows and students, they also care for museum and archival collections of national and international importance: the essential primary materials and sources sought after by scholars across the world.

(Augustus Theodore) Bartholomew . PICTURES, SKETCHES AND DRAWINGSBY OR RELATING TO SAMUEL BUTLER By his will Butler bequeathed his pictures, sketches, and studies to his executors to be destroyed or otherwise disposed of as they might think best, the proceeds (if any) to fall into residue. They were not sold: some were given to Shrewsbury School; some to the British Museum; one, an unfinished sketch of the back of the house in which Keats died on the Piazza di Spagna, Rome, to the Keats and Shelley Memorial there; many were distributed among his friends, Alfred Cathie taking fifteen and I taking all that were left over. Alfred lives in Canal Road, Mile End, and, this being on the route of the German air-raids, he was anxious to put his pictures in a place of safety. Accordingly it was arranged between us in 1917 that I should buy them from him. When he heard that I was giving them to St. John's, he desired that I should not buy all, because he wished to give two of them himself to the College. Accordingly, I bought only thirteen, and the remaining two, viz. no. 28, Leatherhead Church, and no. 59, Chiavenna, 1887, were given to St. John's College by Alfred. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Books on bioinformatics which began appearing in the mid 80s primarily served gene-hunters, and biologists who wished to construct family trees showing tidy lines of descent. Given the great pharmaceutical industry interest in genes, this trend has continued in most subsequent texts. These deal extensively with the exciting topic of gene discovery and searching databases, but hardly consider genomes as information channels through which multiple forms and levels of information, including genic information, have passed through the generations.

Book Synopsis The Way of All Flesh by : Samuel Butler
Download or read book The Way of All Flesh written by Samuel Butler and published by LA CASE Books. This book was released on 2000 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Way of All Flesh is one of the time-bombs of literature," said V. S. Pritchett. "One thinks of it lying in Samuel Butler's desk for thirty years, waiting to blow up the Victorian family and with it the whole great pillared and balustraded edifice of the Victorian novel." Written between 1873 and 1884 but not published until 1903, a year after Butler's death, his marvelously uninhibited satire savages Victorian bourgeois values as personified by multiple generations of the Pontifex family. A thinly veiled account of his own upbringing in the bosom of a God-fearing Christian family, Butler's scathingly funny depiction of the self-righteous hypocrisy underlying nineteenth-century domestic life was hailed by George Bernard Shaw as "one of the summits of human achievement."
