Book excerpt: The Saints of Santo Domingo: Dominican Resistance in the Age of Neocolonialism tells the story of a generation of Dominican warriors, who surrendered their energies, and often their lives, in the struggle against devastating poverty, glaring social inequality and state violence. Daniel Shaw, a professor of Latin American and Caribbean studies at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and Eugenio María de Hostos College, recounts the lives of the persecuted leaders of the clandestine FALPO and MPD. Shaw -an internationalist and anti-imperialist leader in the United States- has lived alongside and organized with social movements in the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Central America, Brazil and Western Africa. Guided by a profound sense of loss and duty, Shaw seeks to rescue from oblivion the example of Chu, Furi, Claridad and other larger than life Dominican fighters who were assassinated by the neocolonial Dominican state. Among the other themes explored in his timely book are Haitian-Dominican unity, forced migration and the everyday survival of the exiled Dominican community in New York City. The Saints of Santo Domingo is a must read for any student of Dominican history trying to bridge the gap between the murderous regimes of Trujillo and Balaguer, and the present day repression of the popular, anti-imperialist movement.

Book excerpt: "The child's name is Isabel! That's all there is to it!" Grandma Isabel's voice showed she was in no mood for argument. But Rose's mother was just as insistent: "Her name is Rose!" "It's Isabel!" "Rose, I tell you!" "Isabel!" Mary Fabyan Windeatt Sometimes Senor Flores lost patience with his wife and mother-in-law. "Call the child anything you like," he pleaded-"only let a man have some peace in his own house!" The matter of Rose's name finally got settled, but then there were other things to cause puzzlement and misunderstanding. Why, for instance, did Rose have to turn part of the house into a hospital? And why did she want to live in a tiny little hut in the backyard? Why didn't she just go to a convent and become a nun? This book gives the answers. It also relates what happened when Rose tried to become a nun, describes how she cared for the sick, and tells what happened in the end to Rose's mother. All in all, this is the beautiful story of the little Rose of South America, the first canonized Saint of the New World.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lucas, the garrulous bishop of Tuy, included the thaumaturgy of Saint Dominic of Silos as one of the glories of Spain in his mid-thirteenth-century account of the Peninsula's history. This study examines the rise to prominence of one of the most important of saints' cults in Medieval Spain and its development throughout the Middle Ages. It interrogates neglected texts such as the late eleventh-century Vita Dominici Exiliensis and the late thirteenth-century Miraculos romancados (as well as artistic representations and works written outside Silos), and places the more widely known Vida de Santo Domingo by Gonzalo de Berceo (c. 1260) in a new light by firmly fixing its presentation of the saint within the development of the cult. Dominic's veneration became centred upon his role in freeing captives, and a study of this phenomenon provides a focus on the frontier and its settlers through their devotion to the saint, as well as illuminating their view of their Muslim adversaries. This is not the only centre of interest in the book, and a variety of approaches are employed to draw as round a picture as possible of the functioning of this saint's cult, from analysis of the manuscript traditions of the various works discussed to a consideration of the anthropology of Silos as a pilgrimage centre. All quotations are given in both Latin or Romance with an English translation.

Book excerpt: This vibrant, provocative début novel explores the dreams and struggles of three generations of Dominican women. Graciela, born on the outskirts of Santo Domingo at the turn of the century, is a headstrong adventuress who comes of age during the U.S. occupation. Too poor to travel beyond her imagination, she is frustrated by the monotony of her life, which erodes her love affairs and her relationship with Mercedes, her daughter. Mercedes, abandoned by Graciela at thirteen, turns to religion for solace and, after managing to keep a shop alive during the Trujillo dictatorship, emigrates to New York with her husband and granddaughter, Leila. Leila inherits her great-grandmother Graciela’s passion-driven recklessness. But, caught as she is between cultures, her freedom arrives with its own set of obligations and dangers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of women's spirituality and Christian mysticism demonstrates that women have been influential religious leaders even without benefit of priestly ordination and theological training. St. Catherine of Siena and St. Teresa of Avila are examples of women with visionary gifts of tremendous power. A less well-known Spanish visionary is Sor María of Santo Domingo, a Dominican tertiary of peasant lineage who became so famous for her raptures, austerities, and prophecies that the king, a cardinal, and nobles considered her a living saint. In 1948 research in the archives of the University of Zaragoza uncovered The Book of Prayer of Sor María of Santo Domingo (originally published around 1518) which had gone unnoticed for centuries. The text includes some of Sor María's ecstatic utterances and representations, and is a first-hand look at a women who in many ways is as representative of the early years of sixteenth century Spain as St. Teresa was of the later years. Giles' book provides the first English translation of this text as well as a study of Sor María and the issues that pushed her into the limelight.

The pictures are word-painted and not limned in crayon or oil; they are drawn with a graphic pen and not painted with an artist's brush. They are pictures all the same-lifelike, faithful, and true. Each chapter and there are nearly a hundred of them-is a portrait, the original of which once lived in a Dominican cloister, in a Convent home, in an ancestral hall, in a princely or noble mansion, or, like Jesus at Nazareth, in a lowly cottage amongst simple, humble, working folk who earned their daily bread by the sweat of their brow. They are offered to the reader for his study, his admiration, and maybe even for his imitation.
