Book Synopsis The Court of Queen's Bench of Manitoba, 1870-1950 by : Dale Brawn
Download or read book The Court of Queen's Bench of Manitoba, 1870-1950 written by Dale Brawn and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2006-12-15 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of the Manitoba judiciary is not only the first biographical history to examine an entire provincial bench, it is also one of the first studies to offer an internal view of the political nature of the judicial appointment process. Dale Brawn has penned the biographies of the first thirty-three men appointed to Manitoba's Court of Queen's Bench. The relative youth of Manitoba as a province and the small size of its legal profession makes possible an exceptionally detailed investigation of the background of those appointed to the province's highest trial court. The biographical data that Brawn has collected for this book highlights the extent to which judicial candidates underwent a socialization process designed to produce a legal elite whose members shared remarkably similar views and ways of thinking. In addition, these biographies suggest that until at least 1950, seats on provincial benches were rewards for political services rendered. Many lawyers became judges not because of their legal ability, but because they had made themselves known in the communities in which they practiced. This fascinating study offers an intimate look at personalities ranging from prime ministers to members of the bench and both senior levels of government.
Book Synopsis The Deacon's Ministry of Charity and Justice by : William T. Ditewig
Download or read book The Deacon's Ministry of Charity and Justice written by William T. Ditewig and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The deacon's exercise of charity and justice extends the loving hand of God's constant love and mercy to all who are in need. The Vatican's Congregation for Catholic Education has called this work "the ministry most characteristic of the deacon." In The Deacon's Ministry of Charity and Justice, Deacon William Ditewig focuses on this ministry as a constitutive element of the nature of the Church itself--always flowing from the ministries of Word and Sacrament and leading back to them, never apart from them. Along with a rich exploration of the scriptural, historical, and theological foundation of the deacon's practice of charity and justice, Deacon Ditewig--one of today's foremost experts on the permanent diaconate--develops specific and concrete principles for exercising these ministries faithfully, authentically, and effectively. The Deacon's Ministry series explores the three fundamental diaconal ministries identified in the teaching of Vatican II: those of the liturgy, of the word, and of charity to the people of God (Lumen Gentium 29). This series, written by three highly regarded permanent deacons, offers a rich combination of theology, spirituality, and practical and effective guidance. Deacons and those in diaconal formation, their families, the bishops and priests they work with, and the people they serve will welcome it.

Book Synopsis The Preaching of Pope Francis by : Gregory Heille
Download or read book The Preaching of Pope Francis written by Gregory Heille and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the beginning of his pontificate, Pope Francis has encouraged, inspired, and delighted those who have heard him preach. Especially fascinating have been his plain-spoken and insightful weekday morning Mass homilies. He has also offered the church a substantial contribution on the theory and practice of homiletics in a large section of his first major teaching document, Evangelii Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel). In The Preaching of Pope Francis, Gregory Heille, OP, introduces readers to the Pope's preaching, his insights about the preaching vocation of the ordained, and his call to all the baptized to go to the margins as missionary disciples and evangelists of the Word. Heille, a highly regarded professor of homiletics and preacher himself, offers an inspiring and practical resource for priests, deacons, and anyone involved in the ministry of preaching. He shares the Pope's vision and example for the preparation and delivery of effective and engaging homilies and for laity invested in the Church's ministry of the Word in a post-Vatican II pastoral context.
