Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Address on the Character of the Colony Founded by George Popham The commemoration at Fort Popham in 1862 has called forth from the public press some severe criticisms on the moral character of the Sagadahock colonists of 1607. These strictures, it is believed by the committee of arrangements for this celebration, have no foundation in history; and I have been requested to devote this hour to their examination. It is strange that an occasion so full of historic mementoes, and which awakened the sympathies of so large a concourse of worthy and intelligent men, should have been seized upon for the purpose of calumniating that little band. They had abandoned all the genial associations of home life, exposed themselves to hazards, over the wide ocean, of which but few of them had any experience, for the acknowledged noble purpose of enlarging the area of civilization, planting the Christian religion, and opening the way for a more extensive commerce, with little to cheer them but the hope of success, and a confidence in the watchful care of a beneficent Providence. Book excerpt: Two shiploads of hopeful colonists arrive on the rugged coast of present day Maine in late spring, 1607. They are determined to establish Popham Colony as a permanent English presence, just as other English settlers were doing farther south at the Jamestown settlement. By diligent effort, they construct a substantial fort, Fort St. George, to serve as their "base." What these intrepid adventurers cannot know is that one of their number, Duke Esteban Menendez, has actually been recruited by the King of Spain as a spy to ensure that this British effort fails. Betrayal at Popham traces the efforts of this dedicated nobleman in his own words, from settlement of Popham Colony to its final abandonment. Adding a touch of romance to this tale of intrigue and betrayal is the tender relationship that develops between one of the Popham settlers, young Reggie Patterson, and the beautiful Abenaki Indian maiden, Angelique.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Address on the Character of the Colony Founded by George Popham Sympathizing then as I do, with the devoted laborers in historical research, I proceed to examine in a kindly spirit, the objections which have been raised to these anniversary proceedings. There is no reason for doubt as to the location of the Popham Colony. The site of the fort now building, is identical with the Indian Sabine. The objections to the celebration are based on the alleged entire failure of the enterprise, and the moral character of the immediate agents in it. The colony is said to have been composed of men, in the home country, endangered by law and being thus constituted, it had no life in itself, and thence soon ended Without fulfilling any profitable purpose. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1866 edition. Excerpt: ... read that the "new pynnace " arrived in England, and was there an object of admiration, as a specimen of naval architecture. The improbability that this "pynnace" was sea-worthy, and made a voyage across the Atlantic, will appear from the following considerations; -- 1. There was not time between the 15th of December and Spring to build a sea-worthy vessel. There were but forty-five persons left in the colony, and this number was reduced before Spring by disease and squabbles with the Indians. There were probably not ten carpenters in the company. The Winter, we are told, was unseasonable and intensely severe. Strachey says, that, "after Capt. Davies's departure they fully finished the fort, trencht and fortified it with 12 pieces of ordnance, and built 50 howses, besides a church and a storehouse," -- sufficient work, we might suppose, to employ forty-five Old Bailey convicts till Spring, without building a sea-going vessel. If Strachey does not tell the truth in this matter, we know nothing at all about this vessel. 2. They had no need of a sea-going vessel. These were furnished by the English undertakers. What they needed was a small craft in which to take fish along shore. The Huguenots built their vessel in 1563 to return home in; it being their only means of escaping starvation. There was no intention of abandoning the Popham settlement till Capt. Davies returned in the Spring with the news that their patron saint, Sir John Popham, surnamed " the hangman," was dead. 3. We know that the Popham colonists were knaves; but it is not necessary to infer that they were fools. Here was a good, stanch ship, the "Mary and John," of London, Captain Davies, master, about to sail for England. The whole company was now reduced to about forty...
