Book excerpt: SAINT BASIL COLLECTION [4 BOOKS] — Quality Formatting and Value — Active Index, Multiple Table of Contents for all Books — Multiple Illustrations Basil of Caesarea, also called Saint Basil the Great, was the Greek bishop of Caesarea Mazaca in Cappadocia, Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey). He was an influential theologian who supported the Nicene Creed and opposed the heresies of the early Christian church, fighting against both Arianism and the followers of Apollinaris of Laodicea. His ability to balance his theological convictions with his political connections made Basil a powerful advocate for the Nicene position. In addition to his work as a theologian, Basil was known for his care of the poor and underprivileged. Basil established guidelines for monastic life which focus on community life, liturgical prayer, and manual labour. Together with Pachomius, he is remembered as a father of communal monasticism in Eastern Christianity. He is considered a saint by the traditions of both Eastern and Western Christianity. Basil, Gregory of Nazianzus, and Gregory of Nyssa are collectively referred to as the Cappadocian Fathers. The Eastern Orthodox Church and Eastern Catholic Churches have given him, together with Gregory of Nazianzus and John Chrysostom, the title of Great Hierarch. He is recognised as a Doctor of the Church in the Roman Catholic Church. He is sometimes referred to by the epithet "Ouranofantor", "revealer of heavenly mysteries". —BOOKS— A TREATISE ON BAPTISM AND A TREATISE ON CONFIRMATION THE BOOK OF SAINT BASIL ON THE SPIRIT THE HEXAEMERON THE LETTERS PUBLISHER: AETERNA PRESS

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The heresy of Arius lowered the dignity of the Holy Ghost as well as that of the Son. He taught that the Three Persons of the Holy Trinity are wholly unlike one another both in essence and in glory. “There is a triad, not in equal glories;” “one more glorious than the other in their glories to an infinite degree.” So says the Thalia, quoted in Ath. de Syn. S: 15. But the Nicene definition, while it was precise in regard to the Son, left the doctrine of the Holy Ghost comparatively open, (Pisteuomen eis to Agion Pneuma,) not from hesitation or doubt, but because this side of Arian speculation was not prominent. (Cf. Basil, Letters cxxv. and ccxxvi. and Dr. Swete in D.C.B. iii. 121.)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Saint Basil, Vol. 1 of 4: The Letters The salient features of his style are the frequent citation of the Scriptures and the use, at every page, of illustration. The former attests not only his familiarity with the sacred text, but also his habit of meditating upon it and his grasp of the meaning. The latter is what one would expect from a native of Cappadocia whose education in Athens had enriched with culture his inherited wealth of imagination. And it is interesting to note how many of the figurative expressions used by St. Basil are lauded today in their English form as brilliant results of original picturesque thinking. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Basil of Caesarea (AD 32978), called the Great by later generations, was one of the fourth centurys greatest theologians and pastors. His influence on the foundation of monastic life was enormous. As he toured the early ascetic communities, members would ask Basil about various aspects of living the Gospel life. Their questions and Basils replies were taken down by tachygraphers and eventually became the Small Asketikon, first published in 366. The Regula Basilii is a Latin translation of this work, done in 397. It is one of the major sources of the Rule of Saint Benedict, and Benedict recommends it to zealous monks, calling it the rule of our holy father Basil. This volume represents a new Latin edition, translated and annotated in English by Anna M. Silvas. It also includes three extra questions and answers that survive only in the Syriac translation. Silvas balances masterfully between the rigors of academic research and the interests of an intelligent, non-specialist readership. This volume promises to become an indispensable resource in understanding both the history and the spirituality of monastic life.

Book excerpt: Basil of Caesarea, also called Saint Basil the Great, (330 -379) was the bishop of Caesarea Mazaca in Cappadocia, Asia Minor (modern-day Kayseri, Turkey). St. Basil was born into the wealthy family of Basil the Elder, a famous rhetor, and Emmelia of Caesarea. His parents were known for their piety, and his maternal grandfather was a Christian martyr, executed in the years prior to Constantine I's conversion. The principal theological writings of Basil are his De Spirity Sancto (On the Holy Spirit), a lucid and edifying appeal to Scripture and early Christian tradition (to prove the divinity of the Holy Spirit), and his Refutation of the Apology of the Impious Eunomius, written in 363 or 364, three books against Eunomius of Cyzicus, the chief exponent of Anomoian Arianism. The first three books of the Refutation are his work; the fourth and fifth books that are usually included do not belong to Basil, or to Apollinaris of Laodicea, but probably to Didymus "the Blind" of Alexandria.
