Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Russian Army in the World War IN the autumn of 1914, when the scientific study of the effects of war upon modern life passed suddenly from theory to history, the Division of Economics and History of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace proposed to adjust the program of its re searches to the new and altered problems which the War presented. The existing program, which had been prepared as the result Of a conference of economists held at Berne in 1911, and which dealt with the facts then at hand, had just begun to Show the quality Of its contributions; but for many reasons it could no longer be fol lowed Out. A plan was therefore drawn up at the request of the Director of the Division, in which it was proposed, by means of an historical survey, to attempt to measure the economic cost Of the War and the displacement which it was causing in the processes of civilization. Such an Economic and Social History Of the World War, it was felt, if undertaken by men Of judicial temper and ade quate training, might ultimately, by reason of its scientific obliga tions to truth, furnish data for the forming Of sound public opinion, and thus contribute fundamentally toward the aims of an institution dedicated to the cause of international peace. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Day by Day With the Russian Army, 1914-15 For the last ten years or more I have paid long visits to Russia, being interested in anything that might con duce to closer relations between the two countries. During this time the whole course of Russia's public life has brought her far nearer to England - ih particular, the creation of new legislative institutions, the Wonderful economic development of the country, and the first real acquaintance which England has made with Russian culture. I always travelled to Russia through Germany, whose people had an inborn unintelligence and contempt for all things Russian, and whose Government has done what it could to hold England and Russia at arm's length from each other. I often used to wonder which of us Germany would fight first. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Russian Army: And Its Campaigns in Turkey in 1877 1878 Soon after the outbreak of the recent war between Russia and Turkey, I had tho honor to be selected by the "War Department to go abroad for the purpose of observing the military operations from the Russian side, and for this purpose was assigned to duty as Military Attache to the United States Legation at St. Petersburg. I left New York on the 30th of June and reached St. Petersburg on the 18th of July, 1877, where the necessary formalities precedent to my joining the army, including the granting of the Emperor's permission, were speedily complied with, and I therefore proceeded without delay to the field, reaching the imperial headquarters on the 5th of August. I remained with the army continuously throughout the rest of the campaign-reaching Constantinople with it in the following month of February-and until the month of July, 1878, when a definite peace was assured by the meeting of the Congress of Berlin. I then returned to St. Petersburg, resumed my post at the legation, and remained there until January, 1879, engaged in collecting and digesting the official reports of the war, as well as the data for a study of the Russian military system. Book excerpt: Excerpt from With the Russian Army Being the Experiences of a National Guardsman I had been so long at an office desk when the war broke over Europe that the idea Of going into it never occurred to me. I had been considered too young for the war of 1898. Parental Objection had stopped my attempting to witness the war between Japan and Russia. I had been compelled to devote myself to business affairs for seven years to the exclusion of all wider interests. It was thus not due to any initia tive of mine, but to the energy of my mother, who planned for me the experiences she had forbidden ten years before, that I received the following invitation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Russian Turmoil: Memoirs; Military, Social, and Political IN the midst of the turmoil and bloodshed in Russia people perish and the real outlines of historical events are obliterated. It is for this reason that I have decided to publish these memoirs, in spite of the difficulties of work in my present condition of a refugee, unable to refer to any archives or documents and deprived of the possibility of discussing events with those who have taken part in them. The first part of my book deals chiefly with the Russian Army, with which my life has been closely linked up. Political, social and economic questions are discussed only in so far as I have found it necessary to describe their influence upon the course of events. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fighting Without a War: An Account of Military Intervention in North Russia This book does not assume to tell the whole story of that expedition. I did not see all of it. No man did. In addition to what I saw, how ever, I had the advantage of meeting constantly men who had seen and been in the various other fights and locations. Under the overstimulat ing circumstances of army life the very air seems full of wild rumors. This was particu larly true in the isolations of the Russian fight ing. I have felt the necessity therefore of exer cising great care not to accept as true uncor roborated army rumors. The matters of chief interest in this book, moreover, are matters of my own personal observation and knowledge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Russian Army and the Japanese War, Being Historical and Critical Comments on the Military Policy and Power of Russia and on the Campaign in the Far East, Vol. 2 of 2 The insufficient tactical preparation of our troops Measures taken to improve it. I have touched upon the fact of how our want of tactical training was Shown up in the Crimean and second Turkish Wars. Especially conspicuous was the inability of our senior commanders relying as they usually did upon quite inadequate information as to the enemy's strength and dis positions - to co-ordinate the operations of the different arms towards one end, and their igno rance of Where to deliver the main attack. The minor part played 'by our cavalry and our com paratively great power of defence were also re marked. Finally, attention was drawn to the fact that our lack of the power of manoeuvre compelled us to place superior numbers in the field against the Turks, a course which had not formerly been necessary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from With the Russian Army, Vol. 1: 1914-1917, Being Chiefly Extracts From the Diary of a Military Attache Until the day, which all lovers Of Russia h0pe is not far distant when the Russian General Staff will be able to publish to the world an official account of the work Of the Russian Army in the Great War, it is thought that these extracts from the Diary of a British officer may prove of interest. The writer can at any rate claim to have enjoyed greater opportunities for observation of the Russian army than any other foreign observer, both previous to the war as Military Attache to the British Embassy at Petrograd, and during the war as liaison officer at the front. If some of his Russian friends find his comments occasionally over frank, he asks their forgiveness. He wrote things down as they seemed to him at the time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Surgeon Grow: An American in the Russian Fighting A great yellow cloud rose in the air, sw'eeping towards us rapidly. I thought of artillery limbers coming back for more shells, but the volume of that cloud was too great. As it rolled nearer we made out a great straggling disorganized mob of soldiers, running for their lives, apparently. Many were without hats or coats and some had thrown their rifles away. They were a panic-stricken mob bent only on putting as much space between themselves and the Germans as possible. Their grimy faces were streaked with sweat, their eyes glared wildly like the eyes of a stampeding herd of steers, as they bore down upon us.
