This book looks out upon country-fife conditions from a viewpoint comparatively neglected. It attempts to approach rural social life from the psychological angle. The pur pose oi the book forces it from the Well beaten pathways, but this effort to give emphasis to the mental side of rural problems is not an attempt to discount the other significant aspects of the rural environment. The field of rural service is large enough to contain all Who desire by serious study to advance at some point the happiness, prosperity, and Whole someness that belong by social right to those Who live and work in the country. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rural Problem of the ChurchThe main point I wish to make to-day is that the so-called Rural Problem is not just another, but is the problem of our church for the present day. It is practically the only question before us which has a right to be called a problem; for the satisfactory settlement of this question will carry with it, to a large extent, the settlement of all questions, whether in church or state. No other question so well deserves the careful study and thought of this Presbytery, and my'one regret about to day's conference is that we have not some one in my place, with the exact knowledge of an expert, and the voice of a prophet, to set before us the cause of the rural dweller and convince us of the opportunity and danger of the time. If any proof of the importance of the rural problem were re quired, it is furnished by the fact that a National Conference on the subject was held in Columbus, Ohio, last December, attended by delegates from all parts of the United States, and opened by President Wilson in person. Ex-president Roose velt said some time ago that with the single exception of the conservation of our natural resources, which underlies the problem of rural life, there is no other material question of greater importance now before the American people. What is true of'the United States is-true of Canada. This is our first and greatest domestic problem, overlapping or including practically all others. It is, of course, nothing new in the world; exploitation of rural populations has been a primarycause of national instability since the beginning of history. Nor is the question one that concerns farmers and country ministers alone. The city is as much concerned in the social welfare of the rural population as are country people them selves. The city is in fact largely a product of the country. Genius is rarely born in the city, and probably nine-tenths of the nation's influential leaders come from the farm. I suspect that the city derives from the country half its brains, two thirds of its wealth and three-quarters of its character.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Problem of Rural Life in the United States In this pronouncement we have in the minimum of words'the maximum of constructive suggestion. In the near background we see the picture of country life in its untutored, undisciplined and, consequently, unavailing competition With the modern town. In the foreground we see, through the application to the country of the methods to which the town owes its progress, the dawn of better things. But the central fact of these utterances I desire to emphasise is that, in the mind of the President, the situation to which he is calling public attention is clearly one of which the Department of Agriculture holds the key. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Country Life and Rural Problems: A Study Outline This study outline takes up some of the social problems of the country community. It suggests a series of discussions on subjects related to the farm home, the country church, the rural school and the rural neighborhood. It is not concerned with the business of farming or with the profession of housekeeping. It does not touch on the economic problems of farm life. These subjects - marketing, farm labor, rural credits, the cooperative movement, etc. - may be covered in a later outline if it seems desirable. How to Use the Outline Adapt the outline to your own community needs. There are five main divisions of the subject: The Farm Home; The Rural School; The Country Church; Community Life; and The Country Town. Give as much time to the discussion of each of these subjects as the needs of your community demand. Under each subject you will find topics for discussion. An entire evening or afternoon's program may be given to one topic, or several topics may be combined to make up one program. The subject of the rural school, for instance, if covered thoroly might occupy four, or perhaps five, programs. But if you already enjoy the advantages of school consolidation you will need to give less time to this subject. How To Get Reference Material Each subject for discussion is followed by a list of references for reading and study. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rural Problem and the Catholic School One of the outstanding problems in American rural life today is to be found in the decline of the rural church. Surveys conducted in recent years point to this defect as one of the cancers that are eating the Vitals out of American public life. Religion must enter into the hearts of the people or evil looms up for the future. It is, indeed, only too true that the country church, both in Catholic and non-catholic circles, is not fulfilling the mission for which it was intended. It is likely enough that distance makes us under estimate the jolting of minds caused always by a civilization's changing of gear - from family to tribe, from tribe to petty kingdom, from petty kingdom to nation. In the day of these changes probably none of them seemed to have taken place naturally. None the less it must be admitted that at no earlier period in history can the road Of social progress have appeared bestrewn with such various obstacles. Even if at any time so many obstacles had been lying around, they would not all have had to be encountered. In England, at any rate, stumbling blocks have often been escaped by those unaware of their existence difficulties never looked at in theory have fairly often solved themselves in practice. Part, indeed, of the Englishman's present difficulty lies in finding himself, without any national gift for theorizing, obliged now to formulate his beliefs and. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rural Life Problem of the United States: Notes of an Irish Obeserver The thoughts contained in the following pages relate to one side of the life of a country which has been to me, as to many Irishmen, a second home. They are offered in friendly recognition of kindness I cannot hope to repay, received largely as a student of American social and economic problems, from public-spirited Americans who, I know, will appreciate most highly any slight service to their country. The substance of the book appeared in five articles contributed to the New York Outlook under the title "Conservation and Rural Life." Several American friends, deeply interested in the Rural Life problem, asked me to republish the series. In doing so, I have felt that I ought to present a more comprehensive view of my subject than either the space allowed or the more casual publication demanded. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Challenge of the Country: A Study of Country Life Opportunity Tms study of country life opportunity and analysis of various phases of the rural problems in America has been written at the request of the International Committee of Young Men's Christian Associations, particularly for their County Work and Student de partments. The former desired a handbook for the training of leaders in rural Christian work and the latter a textbook for the use of college students in Christian Associations wishing to study the funda mentals of rural social service and rural progress. It is the sincere hope of those who have asked for this book that it may bring to very many earnest young men and women, and especially in the colleges of the United States and Canada, a challenging vision of the need of trained leadership in every phase of rural life, as well as a real opportunity for life investment. Being the first book in the field which makes avail able the results of the Thirteenth U. S. Census, it is hoped that its fresh treatment of the latest aspects of the rural problems will commend itself to general readers who are interested in the Rural Life Move ment and the welfare of the rural three-fifths of America. Write a list of the authorities consulted for the making of this little volume it would not consist of the names of books and of writers, but of obscure men who, in the rural districts of England, are doing their work and living their lives. For several years back, having been deeply impressed with the magnitude and importance of the migration to town, it has been my habit to discuss the question with all sorts and conditions of countrymen. The study, if I may dignify it with a term so austere, began in a semi-depopulated district that I have known since childhood. It was needless to ask questions there. Hardly has one family left without my knowing why, when, and whither it went. The knowledge thus acquired served as a basis of more. In any new district it was but natural to ask if the same conditions prevailed, or what other influences came into Operation. And as I have wandered in most of the English Shires, conversing freely alike with the landlord and the tenant, Anglican and Dis senter, the hind at his plough, the ratcatcher working ditches with ferret and terrier, the Agrarian lecturer, the village atheist, the poacher, the grocer, and doctor and land agent, it is my own blame if I have not Obtained a tolerably correct notion of the ideas and aspirations of the English villager. My chief regret is, thati possess no equally intimate knowledge of foreign countries in order to determine how far a movement, world-wide in operation, is world-wide in its causes.
