Danielle Edmonds The authorities claim the deaths of my parents and brother were an accident, but I know the truth… someone killed them. My suspicions are confirmed when two thugs break into my house searching for something of my father's. However, all they find is me. They leave me for dead--alone until Ellis arrives at my side and tells me so many things that can't be real. Instead of doing his job and reaping my soul, he grants me two additional weeks of life. Now I have two weeks to track down my family's killer. Ellis Grimm The cardinal rule of reaping: Don't get emotionally involved. But the night I took Danielle's father, something drew me to her and I've tried watching over her ever since. When I hear whispers she's about to be cast into the Pit of the Damned, it's time to intervene. I'm allowed two weeks of vacation per century. If I spend it with her and remind her of the greatest things in life, surely she'll give up her quest for vengeance. Now I have two weeks to redeem her soul. But she's stubborn, and I'm not sure if two weeks will be enough. The Reaper's Gambit is the first novel in the Reaper's Grace series, featuring smart heroines, powerful heroes, and a forbidden romance between soulmates in every story. Each book can be read as a thrilling standalone novel, but they're best enjoyed in order. ♥ Georgia Romance Writer's 2021 Maggie Award of Excellence winner for Paranormal Romance (Prepublished). ♥

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular references to the Rose Hall Great House in Jamaica often focus on the legend of the “White Witch of Rose Hall.” Over one hundred thousand people visit this plantation every year, many hoping to catch a glimpse of Annie Palmer’s ghost. After experiencing this tour with her daughter in 2013 and leaving Jamaica haunted by the silences of the tour, Celia E. Naylor resolved to write a history of Rose Hall about those people who actually had a right to haunt this place of terror and trauma—the enslaved. Naylor deftly guides us through a strikingly different Rose Hall. She introduces readers to the silences of the archives and unearths the names and experiences of the enslaved at Rose Hall in the decades immediately before the abolition of slavery in Jamaica. She then offers a careful reading of Herbert G. de Lisser’s 1929 novel, The White Witch of Rosehall—which gave rise to the myth of the “White Witch”—and a critical analysis of the current tours at Rose Hall Great House. Naylor’s interdisciplinary examination engages different modes of history making, history telling, and truth telling to excavate the lives of enslaved people, highlighting enslaved women as they navigated the violences of the Jamaican slavocracy and plantationscape. Moving beyond the legend, she examines iterations of the afterlives of slavery in the ongoing construction of slavery museums, memorializations, and movements for Black lives and the enduring case for Black humanity. Alongside her book, she has created a website as another way for readers to explore the truths of Rose Hall: rosehallproject.columbia.edu.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BOOK AWARD WINNER * NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER * WINNER OF THE CUNDILL HISTORY PRIZE 'A remarkable book' - Jennifer Szalai, The New York Times 'A brilliant exercise in historical excavation and recovery' - Annette Gordon-Reed, author of The Hemingses of Monticello 'A history told with brilliance and tenderness and fearlessness' - Jill Lepore, author of These Truths: A History of the United States In 1850s South Carolina, Rose, an enslaved woman, faced a crisis: the imminent sale of her daughter Ashley. Thinking quickly, she packed a cotton bag with a few items. Soon after, the nine-year-old girl was separated from her mother and sold. Decades later, Ashley's granddaughter Ruth embroidered this family history on the sack in spare, haunting language. That, in itself, is a story. But it's not the whole story. How does one uncover the lives of people who, in their day, were considered property? Harvard historian Tiya Miles carefully traces these women's faint presence in archival records, and, where archives fall short, she turns to objects, art, and the environment to write a singular history of the experience of slavery, and the uncertain freedom afterward. All That She Carried gives us history as it was lived, a poignant story of resilience and love passed down against steep odds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ancient farmers used draft animals for plowing but the heavy work of harvesting fell to the humans, using sickle and scythe. Change came in the mid-19th century when Cyrus Hall McCormick built the mechanical harvester. Though the McCormicks used their wealth to establish art collections and universities, battle disease, and develop birth control, members of the family faced constant scrutiny and scandal. This book recounts their story as well as the history of the International Harvester Company (IHC)--a merger of the McCormick and Deering companies and the world's leader in agricultural machinery in the 1900s.
