Book excerpt: The Rose and The Ring is a satirical work of fantasy fiction written by William Makepeace Thackeray, originally published at Christmas 1854 (though dated 1855). It criticises, to some extent, the attitudes of the monarchy and those at the top of society and challenges their ideals of beauty and marriage. Set in the fictional countries of Paflagonia and Crim Tartary, the story revolves around the lives and fortunes of four young royal cousins. Each page is headed by a line of poetry summing up the plot at that point and the storyline as a whole is laid out, as the book states, as "A Fireside Pantomime". The original edition had illustrations by Thackeray who had once intended a career as an illustrator.

His best known works include a series of novels set in Graustark, a fictional East European country, and the novel Brewster's Millions, which was adapted into a play and several films. Although McCutcheon became famous for the Graustark series, he disliked the characterization of being a Romantic and preferred to be identified with his playwriting. His works include: Castle Craneycrow (1902), The Sherrods (1903), The Day of the Dog (1904), Nedra (1905), Cowardice Court (1906), The Flyers (1907), Viola Gwyn (1922), and Kindling and Ashes (1926).

Book excerpt: The Rose and the Ring (Deseret Alphabet edition): A Fireside Pantomime for Great and Small Children (Deseret Alphabet Classics) (Volume 17) Paperback - November 29, 2013 William Makepeace Thackery (1811-1863) was an English novelist. In his own day, he was considered second only to Charles Dickens as a writer. Today, he is best remembered for his satiric novel, Vanity Fair. Thackery calls The Rose and the Ring a "fireside pantomime," that is, a pantomime in book form. Pantomime is a uniquely English holiday tradition, a stage production mixing fairy tales, magic, mayhem, and audience participation. Thackery here mixes all these with a gently satiric look at our ideas of beauty, privilege, obligation, and justice. Although Christmas itself is never mentioned, Thackery included it among the Christmas books he authored under the pen-name "M.A. Titmarsh." Soggy, unseen farm lands and gardens to their left, Stygian forests above and to their right. Ahead, the far-distant will-o-the-wisp icker of many lights, blinking in the foggy shroud. Three or four miles lay between the sullen travelers and the town that cradled itself in the lower end of the valley. Night had stolen early upon the dour spring day. The tall man who led carried a rickety, ill-smelling lantern that sent its feeble rays no farther ahead than a dozen paces; it served best to reveal the face of the huge Silver watch which frequently was drawn from its owner's coat pocket.
