Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Times of George Villiers, Vol. 3 of 3: Duke of Buckingham, From Original and Authentic Sources A few years previously, the unpopularity of the Duke at Cambridge had been manifested by a play, in which his measures were satirized, and which had been acted by the scholars of Ben'et College. The ancient discipline of the University appears, Indeed, to have SO greatly relaxed, that in 1625-6 - in compliance with a letter from the King - Lord Suffolk had found it expedient to address the Heads Of Houses, whom he styled Gentle men, and my loving friends, exhorting them to restore order and consequent prosperity to their University. The last sentence had an ominous sound, for there were few cases in which the King thought it necessary to interfere, in which Buckingham did not prompt the royal mind to active measures. Notwithstanding the unpopularity Of his min ister, disregarding the public notion that, as the patron and personal friend of Laud, Buckingham was the patron Of Roman Catholics, and in direct defiance Of the impeachment, all the influence Of the Crown was employed to procure the Duke's election to the Office Of Chancellor. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What can we know of the private lives of early British sovereigns? Through the unusually large number of letters that survive from King James VI of Scotland/James I of England (1566-1625), we can know a great deal. Using original letters, primarily from the British Library and the National Library of Scotland, David Bergeron creatively argues that James' correspondence with certain men in his court constitutes a gospel of homoerotic desire. Bergeron grounds his provocative study on an examination of the tradition of letter writing during the Renaissance and draws a connection between homosexual desire and letter writing during that historical period. King James, commissioner of the Bible translation that bears his name, corresponded with three principal male favorites—Esmé Stuart (Lennox), Robert Carr (Somerset), and George Villiers (Buckingham). Esmé Stuart, James' older French cousin, arrived in Scotland in 1579 and became an intimate adviser and friend to the adolescent king. Though Esmé was eventually forced into exile by Scottish nobles, his letters to James survive, as does James' hauntingly allegorical poem Phoenix. The king's close relationship with Carr began in 1607. James' letters to Carr reveal remarkable outbursts of sexual frustration and passion. A large collection of letters exchanged between James and Buckingham in the 1620s provides the clearest evidence for James' homoerotic desires. During a protracted separation in 1623, letters between the two raced back and forth. These artful, self-conscious letters explore themes of absence, the pleasure of letters, and a preoccupation with the body. Familial and sexual terms become wonderfully intertwined, as when James greets Buckingham as "my sweet child and wife." King James and Letters of Homoerotic Desire presents a modern-spelling edition of seventy-five letters exchanged between Buckingham and James. Across the centuries, commentators have condemned the letters as indecent or repulsive. Bergeron argues that on the contrary they reveal an inward desire of king and subject in a mutual exchange of love.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Duke of Stockbridge: A Romance of Shays' Rebellion The Duke of Stockbridge was written by Mr. Edward Bellamy in 1879, at the request of the editor of a local paper in Great Harrington, Massachusetts. In the author's mind were already stirring the grave questions which he was soon to propound in Looking Backward; and when he undertook to write a romance of his native Berkshire Hills he chose, not unnaturally, the episode of the revolt of the debtor-farmers in 1786 against their harsh creditors and the oppressive State government. Although he wrote the story primarily for publication in an inconspicuous village paper, Mr. Bellamy was not the artist to allow the work to fall below the standard of his literary conscience; and as the tale grew upon his hands he soon was putting into it the rarest quality of his style, of his genuineness, and of his imagination, as well as the industry of his painstaking research. When the story was completed he refused the offers of publishers, and determined to delay its appearance as a book until after the publication of Looking Backward, which now had taken pressing shape in his mind. The Duke of Stockbridge was the projection of his sympathies into the forms of art; but he knew that, if published then, it would be received merely as a novel, and its depth of meaning would be perceived only by few. Therefore it seemed better that this tale should wait until he had given, in his next book, his formal and unmistakable definition of proper human relationship. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A King and a Few Dukes a Romance I was sitting, as I say, on my veranda, cleaning the locks of my gun with a fist full of oily rags. The morning sun blazed in the heavens, sending splendid red lan ces of light straight through mountain notch over acres of dew-splashed bracken and glistening meadows. A dainty spring shower had just passed across the valley, vanishing against the northern Caspian peaks in a double rain bow and a light peal of thunder; and I, anxious to be about my business, looked up into the sky for signs Of fairer weather.
