Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Opposites attract in this nerdy YA romance from the NYT best-selling author of The Atlas Six! "It’s rom-com perfection."—Adiba Jaigirdar, author of The Henna Wars Bel doesn't want to think about the future. College apps? You’re funny. Extracurriculars? Not a chance. Joining a robotics club filled with boys who ignore her or--even worse--constantly ask if she needs help? Please, anything but that. But when she accidentally reveals a talent for engineering in class, she has no choice. Enter Mateo Luna, the handsome captain of the club. Teo instantly recognizes Bel's talent. He needs her on the team. And not just because he can't stop thinking about the tiny dusting of freckles around her eyes, or how she got him hooked on Taylor Swift--it's because Bel sees him. She challenges him. But when they seriously start butting heads, Bel wonders: Is there really room for a girl like her in STEM? In her YA debut, Alexene Farol Follmuth, author of The Atlas Six (under the penname Olivie Blake), explores both the challenges girls of color face in STEM and the vulnerability of first love with unfailing wit and honesty. Told from dual points of view, My Mechanical Romance is not only swoonworthy--it's downright empowering. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of Engineering The remarkable and rapid development of modern engineering has brought many of its more dramatic phases into public light. Artists, both with pen and pencil, have made use of the opportunities offered, and stories have been written and pictures painted in which the central feature of the composition is some engineering creation, either of fact or of imagination. Many of Kipling's stories, as for example "The Bridge Builders" and ".007," are striking bits of romance, with singular truthfulness of detail, in the field of modern engineering, and Pennell's sketches of the Panama Canal throw a new and most interesting light on that great work. The subject of this afternoon's talk is not, however, modern engineering, except in so far as it is a development, just as every human activity must be, out of the inspiration and the efforts of men of past ages, but rather a glimpse at two or three periods of history of which there is record of engineering endeavor. An interesting factor, at once suggested by these considerations, is that of time, and an effort is made to show this time factor in its relation to these periods of engineering activity, with especial reference to one phase of this activity in the Romance period. Now, an engineer prefers to express his ideas, whenever possible, by means of a drawing or diagram, and so an attempt has been made in the accompanying chart* to show graphically this time relation of historical events. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of Engineering: Stories of the Highway, the Waterway, the Railway, and the Subway It was inevitable that the writer of this volume, while passing over some old ground, in his search for the Sources of Information, should have occasionally struck into the channels formed by his predecessors, while projecting a line of his own. But the Author can conscientiously declare that he has at all times penetrated to the fountain-head for his facts, and has not tapped the reservoirs of others on his way. In any instances in which the opinions or views of writers are quoted, due acknowledgment is made in the text or by notes. This volume, as its title indicates, is a Romance of Engineering; a consideration of the non-technical and anecdotal aspect of road-making, railway-making, and other early Engineering Works. It is not intended, primarily, for students, but for the large classes of youthful and middle-aged readers who desire to know something of the means in the past which have tended to secure the civilization of the present. Book excerpt: What makes a good story or a screenplay great? The vast majority of writers begin the storytelling process with only a partial understanding where to begin. Some labor their entire lives without ever learning that successful stories are as dependent upon good engineering as they are artistry. But the truth is, unless you are master of the form, function and criteria of successful storytelling, sitting down and pounding out a first draft without planning is an ineffective way to begin. Story Engineering starts with the criteria and the architecture of storytelling, the engineering and design of a story--and uses it as the basis for narrative. The greatest potential of any story is found in the way six specific aspects of storytelling combine and empower each other on the page. When rendered artfully, they become a sum in excess of their parts. You'll learn to wrap your head around the big pictures of storytelling at a professional level through a new approach that shows how to combine these six core competencies which include: • Four elemental competencies of concept, character, theme, and story structure (plot) • Two executional competencies of scene construction and writing voice The true magic of storytelling happens when these six core competencies work together in perfect harmony. And the best part? Anyone can do it!
