Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Roman Road Mrs. Groot, the lady that seemed so to have misadventured over and through the sound laws that should govern good primogeniture. If it had ever occurred to Mrs. Groot in an unwary moment of introspection to sum up herself by the light of her past, she would have said that she was a good woman who had made one little mistake but the seven deadly sins sprung from one root could not have shown signs of bearing a finer crop than did the little mistake Mrs. Groot had grafted on to the tree of her fortunes. By nature Mrs. Groot belonged to those infinitely wise people who never indulge in skirmishes with their own thoughts for the pleasure of fighting, but events pressed hard, and think she must whether she would or no. She sat now in the yellow drawing-room at Groot Hall, waylaid by an army of thoughts. Roland, meditative and amused, watched her from the terrace, then he flung away his cigar and entered the room. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Roman Highways IN the present work the Roman highway system in Britain has been treated from a historical rather than a purely archaeological and topographical point of view, and the authors have therefore abstained from attempt ing any detailed examination of the course followed by the great lines of road with their numerous ramifications - a task which would have exceeded the limits of their work, and which has, moreover, been recently very thoroughly and ably performed by Mr. T. Codrington, M. I. C. E., F G. S. In his Roman Roads in Britain.' Similar exigencies of space have also obliged them to considerably cuitail their notice of the towns, villas, and othe1 monuments of the Roman occupation, and also to compress into a single chapter their review of the long period occupied by the gradual conversion of the remains of the old Roman road system into that now existing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Roman Roads in Britain The following attempt to describe the Roman roads of Britain originated in observations made in all parts of the country as opportunities presented themselves to me from time to time. On turning to other sources of information, the curious fact appeared that for a century past the literature of the subject has been widely influenced by the spurious Itinerary attributed to Richard of Cirencester. Though that was long ago shown to be a forgery, statements derived from it, and suppositions founded upon them, are continually repeated, casting suspicion sometimes undeserved on accounts which prove to be otherwise accurate. A wide publicity, and some semblance of authority, have been given to imaginary roads and stations by the new Ordnance maps. Those who early in the last century, under the influence of the new Itinerary, traced the Roman roads, unfortunately left but scanty accounts of the remains which came under their notice, many of which have since been destroyed or covered up in the making of modern roads; and with the evidence now available few Roman roads can be traced continuously. The gaps can often be filled with reasonable certainty, but more often the precise course is doubtful, and the entire course of some roads connecting known stations of the Itinerary of Antonine can only be guessed at. All vestiges may have been destroyed, but chance discoveries show that much may yet be learned from remains buried beneath the soil. The network of roads might easily be made more complete, as a glance at the map will show; but it seems best to refrain from conjecture as much as possible, and to follow the roads only so far as there is evidence available for tracing them. It was at the entrance of a pretty little town called Savignano, ten miles north of Rimini. We crossed the road quickly, and were about to enter the open field again, when my father, stopping the horse suddenly, let me down gently, Close by an ancient marble milestone; and then alighted from the horse himself, in order, as I thought, to take some repose. Book excerpt: This volume aims to present the current state of research on Roman roads and their foundations in a combined historical and archaeological perspective. The focus is on the diverse local histories and the varying degrees of significance of individual roads and regional networks, which are treated here for the most important regions of the empire and beyond. The assembled contributions will be of interest to historians, archaeologists and epigraphers, since they tackle matters as diverse as the technical modalities of road-building, the choice of route, but also the functionality and the motives behind the creation of roads. Roman roads are further intimately related to various important aspects of Roman history, politics and culture. After all, such logistical arteries form the basis of all communication and exchange processes, enabling not only military conquest and security but also facilitating the creation of an organized state as well as trade, food supply and cultural exchange. The study of Roman roads must always be based on a combination of written and archaeological sources in order to take into account both their concrete geographical location and their respective spatial, cultural, and historical context.

Book excerpt: As a parent it can be a bit difficult or even a struggle to break down the facts and details of salvation on a child's level of understanding. Or some adults may just simply need a resource they can occasionally refer to when children ask questions they don't have the immediate answers for. Roman's Road: A Journey to Salvation is the link to sharing salvation with children through a story that gives all the missing details we can forget when telling children about salvation. The author, Ty Wise, introduces this book as a reference for parents, refresher for children's ministry leaders, and a great story experience that a child will not forget about the salvation that our Lord Jesus Christ gives us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Roman Pilgrimage Well, I will have none of that. That is not, to my mind, a true picture of the city of Caesar and Peter, of Brutus and Borgia: so calm and inhuman a mistress would never have won the allegiance of so many periods and religions and temperaments. Rome has the allure of the mountains, the charm of the hills on which she sits, and with which she is girdled: her secret is not some thing which Swallows up the adorer, it is no Nirvana of the spirit or the mind her secret is a jewel for which her admirers must joust, and to whom she will she gives it. All roads lead to Rome yes, but you must get on to a road. And the idler, the false mystic, the Buddhist, the quietist adventures no high road: he lingers, in a keen selfishness, among the meadows of a false philosophy. All roads lead to Rome yes, but you must have the will to move, the passion to achieve, the desire to possess. All roads lead to Rome yes, whether as Christian, or as poet, or as archaeologist, or as aesthete you may go to Rome and you will then reach the treasure of the ages of the heart, the satisfaction of many needs, the solace of sorrow and the deep security of faith.
