Book excerpt: Most video and film editors understand that the story is central to their work and that editing choices need to serve the telling of that story in the best way possible. What they may not know, however, are all the valuable techniques to making this craft appear seamless and part of the busy editor's normal workflow. This book takes an approach to editing that both beginners and intermediate editors will find refreshing. While other books approach the topic of editing by teaching the functions of the editing software, this book explains how you can make smart choices and use those functions to affect the story. In the book you'll learn workflow tips, time saving techniques, linear and non-linear theory, cutting techniques, enhancing emotion through music and sound effects, leveling and mastering audio, color correction, and most importantly, the role editing can have on the telling of the story. Additional techniques are shown through multiple step-by-step videos available on the author's site as well as clips from a documentary the author created on editing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why should the church be concerned about cultures? Louis J. Luzbetak began to answer this question twenty-five years ago with the publication of The Church and Cultures: An Applied Anthropology for the Religious Worker. Reprinted six times and translated into five languages, it became an undisputed classic in the field. Now, by popular demand, Luzbetak has thoroughly rewritten his work, completely updating it in light of contemporary anthropological and missiological thought and in face of current world conditions. Serving as a handbook for a culturally sensitive ministry and witness, The Church and Cultures introduces the non-anthropologist to a wealth of scientific knowledge directly relevant to pastoral work, religious education social action and liturgy - in fact, to all forms of missionary activity in the church. It focuses on a burning theological issue: that of contextualization, the process by which a local church integrates its understanding of the Gospel (text) with the local culture (context).

Book excerpt: T/James Reagan has novelized Richard Kelly's 2006 cult film "Southland Tales" into a complete vision of a complex story of power, politics, and porno. The title refers to the Southland, a name used by locals to refer to Southern California and Greater Los Angeles. Set in the then-near future of 2008, as part of an alternate history, the novel is an expanded portrait of Los Angeles, and a satiric commentary on the military–industrial complex and the infotainment industry. Combining the theatrical cut, the Cannes cut, and the graphic prequel novels, T/James Reagan offers his trademark unflinching post-Empire vision on Kelly's ambitious, sprawling narrative. This novel can be downloaded for free at: https://archive.org/details/SouthlandTalesTJamesReagan https://drive.google.com/file/d/1wFkv2lfjD2mTk8eIVD8T0T8w2C9KipMn/view T/James Reagan is also the author of: Pushing Closer is a quiet novel about starting over and unexpectedly finding love. Lovetrust is a campus novel that focuses on the distance we place between each other. Beach House Burning is a sequel to Lovetrust, set fifteen years after Reagan's debut novel. Famous For Nothing is a satire of celebrity blogs. Leeds House is a horror satire for the Millennial generation. Empire Waste is a dark exploration of New York's fashion industry. HOT BLONDE GIRLS WITH HEAVY EYE MAKEUP is a satire about cancel culture. Southland Tales: The Complete Saga is a novelization of Richard Kelly's (Donnie Darko) cult classic film. Neon Blacktop is a fiction novel inspired by the films of Richard Kelly like Donnie Darko and The Box. MISS JULIE 2020 is a remake of August Strindberg's stage play, Miss Julie. This reimagining is about a news organization trying to figure out how to cover a rising health crisis.

The good, not-so-good, and hilarious situations the four boys became involved in on a day-to-day basis are insights into what city boys did to keep themselves busy during school days, after school was out for the summer and on weekends in Berwyn, Illinois. Lacking the many entertainment forms of modern society, the young boys of the late 1920s spent much of their time roaming the city streets and parks, riding the elevated train, finding other forms of entertainment, and sometimes seeking scary adventures.

Book excerpt: Robert Lustig changed the national conversation about fat. Now, a pioneer in “obesity paradox” research delivers a message that everyone who struggles to shed socalled excess weight will want to hear. After research uncovered that overweight and even moderately obese people with certain chronic diseases often live longer and fare better than their normal weight counterparts, Carl Lavie, MD, realized that being moderately fit is more important for good health than having a low body mass index. Sharing the science behind these recent findings, The Obesity Paradox shows readers how to achieve what’s really important: maximum health—not minimum weight.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Can you Count the Clouds?" asks the voice of God from the whirlwind in the stunningly beautiful catalogue of nature-questions from the Old Testament Book of Job. Tom McLeish takes a scientist's reading of this ancient text as a centrepiece to make the case for science as a deeply human and ancient activity, embedded in some of the oldest stories told about human desire to understand the natural world. Drawing on stories from the modern science of chaos and uncertainty alongside medieval, patristic, classical and Biblical sources, Faith and Wisdom in Science challenges much of the current 'science and religion' debate as operating with the wrong assumptions and in the wrong space. Its narrative approach develops a natural critique of the cultural separation of sciences and humanities, suggesting an approach to science, or in its more ancient form natural philosophy - the 'love of wisdom of natural things' - that can draw on theological and cultural roots. Following the theme of pain in human confrontation with nature, it develops a 'Theology of Science', recognising that both scientific and theological worldviews must be 'of' each other, not holding separate domains. Science finds its place within an old story of participative reconciliation with a nature, of which we start ignorant and fearful, but learn to perceive and work with in wisdom. Surprisingly, science becomes a deeply religious activity. There are urgent lessons for education, the political process of decision-making on science and technology, our relationship with the global environment, and the way that both religious and secular communities alike celebrate and govern science.
