This book was released on 2007 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecosystem monitoring is a mandate of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), and monitoring the plankton, which are at the base of aquatic food chains, is an important component in any monitoring programme. These changes have occurred over decadal time scales and have been observed by means of the Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR) programme. In the context of the idea of DFO setting up of monitoring programmes in new areas, it was decided that it would be timely to hold a Workshop to discuss the utility of CPR to such programmes. The main Workshop objectives were: to discuss the role of CPR sampling in current monitoring programmes; to examine the desirability for establishing new lines (e.g., Gulf of St Lawrence, Great Lakes, Arctic); to share information about CPR data use among current users and potential future users; to compare CPR data on plankton distribution and abundance to results obtained using other methods; and to make recommendations. This document presents an overview of presentations and ensuing discussions.

Book excerpt: Healthy waterways and oceans are essential for our increasingly urbanised world. Yet monitoring water quality in aquatic environments is a challenge, as it varies from hour to hour due to stormwater and currents. Being at the base of the aquatic food web and present in huge numbers, plankton are strongly influenced by changes in environment and provide an indication of water quality integrated over days and weeks. Plankton are the aquatic version of a canary in a coal mine. They are also vital for our existence, providing not only food for fish, seabirds, seals and sharks, but producing oxygen, cycling nutrients, processing pollutants, and removing carbon dioxide from our atmosphere. This Second Edition of Plankton is a fully updated introduction to the biology, ecology and identification of plankton and their use in monitoring water quality. It includes expanded, illustrated descriptions of all major groups of freshwater, coastal and marine phytoplankton and zooplankton and a new chapter on teaching science using plankton. Best practice methods for plankton sampling and monitoring programs are presented using case studies, along with explanations of how to analyse and interpret sampling data. Plankton is an invaluable reference for teachers and students, environmental managers, ecologists, estuary and catchment management committees, and coastal engineers.
Book Synopsis Zooplankton Ecology by : Maria Alexandra Teodosio
Download or read book Zooplankton Ecology written by Maria Alexandra Teodosio and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-11-19 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims at providing students and researchers an advanced integrative overview on zooplankton ecology, covering marine and freshwater organisms, from microscopic phagotrophic protists, to macro-jellyfishes and active fish larvae. The first book section addresses zooplanktonic organisms and processes, the second section is devoted to zooplankton spatial and temporal distribution patterns and trophic dynamics, and the final section is dedicated to emergent methodological approaches (e.g., omics). Book chapters include comprehensive synthesis, observational and manipulative studies, and sediment-based analysis, a vibrant imprint of benthic-pelagic coupling and ecosystem connectivity. Most chapters also address the impacts of anticipated environmental changes (e.g., warming, acidification).
Book Synopsis Trends in Copepod Studies by : Marco Uttieri
Download or read book Trends in Copepod Studies written by Marco Uttieri and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Copepods, or more commonly referred to as the "insects of the sea", have successfully colonised every aquatic environment, equating insects in terms of absolute and relative success. They represent up to 90-97% of the marine zooplankton biomass, but may also be conspicuous in freshwater systems. Copepods are the linchpin of aquatic foodwebs; they prey upon phytoplankton while simultaneously acting as a staple food for higher trophic level organisms, contribute to the vertical fluxes of carbon and sustain recycled production through the excretion of ammonia. Copepods can also signal possible climate change and are indicators of the effects of ocean acidification. They are also used as model animals for ecotoxicological and molecular studies, and might be adopted as control agents of disease vectors.Current studies are rapidly exploring multiple lines of research with an intended purpose to provide an up-to-date snapshot of some hot topics in the study of the distribution, biology and ecology of these ubiquitous crustaceans. The chapters collected in this volume, written by leading scientists in different fields of investigation, focus on a wide range of processes and scales, from global distribution to molecular investigations, witnessing the interest of the scientific community at different levels. These contributions point out the latest developments and case studies on a number of research issues, and will promote discussion and stimulate advances in each field of investigation. The editor is confident that readers will appreciate the contents of each chapter and will find in them inspiring suggestions for their research, or even just to satisfy their curiosity.

Book Synopsis Monitoring Ecological Change by : Ian F. Spellerberg
Download or read book Monitoring Ecological Change written by Ian F. Spellerberg and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1991-10-25 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Living communities are continuously changing, both as a result of natural processes and of human activities. It is essential for us to have effective biological and ecological monitoring programs in order to detect these changes and understand the factors that influence them. In the first part of the book, the roles of local, national, and international organizations that implement monitoring programs are discussed and assessed. In the second section of the book, a wide range of examples are used to explain and evaluate methods of data collection, analysis, and interpretation. The final section focuses on the important applications of biological monitoring, such as pollution control, land-use management, monitoring rare species, and post-environmental impact assessment.
Book Synopsis Advances in Phytoplankton Ecology by : Lesley Clementson
Download or read book Advances in Phytoplankton Ecology written by Lesley Clementson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2021-12-08 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phytoplankton ecology has developed from an understanding of taxonomy, species dynamics and functional roles, and species interactions with the surrounding environment. New and emerging technologies enable a paradigm shift in the ways we monitor and understand phytoplankton in a range of environments. Advances in Phytoplankton Ecology: Applications of Emerging Technologies is a practical guide to these new technologies and explores their application with case studies to show how recent advances have changed our understanding of phytoplankton ecology.Part one of this book explores how traditional taxonomy and species identification has changed, moving from morphological to molecular techniques. Part two explores the new technologies for remote and automatic monitoring and sensor technology and applications for management. Part three explores the explosion of omics techniques and their application in species identification, functional populations, trait characterization, interspecific interactions, and interaction with their environment. This book is an invaluable guide for marine and freshwater ecology researchers to how new technologies can enhance our understanding of ecology. - Combines traditional techniques with new technologies and methods - Explores the influence of new technology on our understanding of phytoplankton ecology - Provides practical applications of each technique through case studies in each chapter
