Book excerpt: Diabetic Adolescents and their Families presents an innovative approach to the study of coping with chronic illness by focusing on the developmental context in its description of a longitudinal study of families with a diabetic or a healthy adolescent. Inge Seiffge-Krenke considers perspectives of the ill adolescents, their parents, and the physicians treating them. Highlighted topics include typical stressors, individual and family coping strategies, and psychosocial consequences associated with diabetes. The author also examines the changes that occur in adolescents' self-concept and body image and analyses their relationships with parents, physicians, friends, and romantic partners as sources of support and of stress. Numerous case studies illustrate the difficulty of balancing normative development and adherence to the therapeutic regimen. Integrating clinical concerns with fundamental findings of developmental psychology, this book will be of value to anyone with an interest in the study of adolescent health psychology.

This is approximately 7 percent of the population (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International, 2007). Of this number, 5-10 percent is thought to have type 1 diabetes, or juvenile onset. Recent investigations worldwide have shown that as few as 1/3 of adolescents with diabetes have Hgb A1C levels (the glycosylated hemoglobin, a measure of the past 2-3 months of BG levels) less than 8 percent (Graue, Wentzel-Larson, Hanestad, & Sovik, 2005). The purpose of this study was to investigate how much parental involvement affects specific aspects of the diabetes treatment plan, how well the adolescents adhere to their treatment plan, as well as to how conflict affects this adherence. This study replicated a study that examined the relationships between these variables (Anderson et al., 2002), but this study used an older group of adolescents, with a longer disease duration to see if the results were similar. The Diabetes Family Responsibility Questionnaire (DFRQ) (Anderson, Auslander, Jung, Miller, & Santiago, 1990) and the Diabetes Family Conflict Scale (DFCS) (Hood, Butler, Anderson & Laffel, 2007; Rubin, Young-Hyman, & Peyrot, 1989) were both used in the study that is being replicated. This study also used the Self-Care Inventory-Revised (SCI-R) (LaGreca, Swales, Klemp, & Madigan, 1988).

This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Objective: Type 1 diabetes is one of the most common pediatric chronic illnesses. Adolescents are at risk for poorer adherence and in turn, poorer glycemic control; however, youth whose parents remain involved in diabetes care are in better control. A parent's level of involvement is dependent in part upon his or her own social and emotional functioning. Much is known about the link between separate aspects of parent psychosocial functioning (e.g., depressive symptoms, parental stress) and parent involvement in diabetes care, adherence, and glycemic control. However, no study to our knowledge has examined these constructs simultaneously as they interrelate to one another and to youth diabetes status. Given the complexity of human behavior, use of multiple indicators of parent psychosocial status should provide a comprehensive portrayal of precursors to parental monitoring. Methods: The current study used structural equation modeling (SEM) in a sample of 257 parent-youth (aged 11-14) dyads (91% mothers) to examine comprehensive parent psychosocial functioning including parental distress, authoritative parenting, and parental self-efficacy for diabetes management as related to parental monitoring, youth adherence and glycemic control. Results: The SEM model fit the data well [[chi]2 (121) = 209.24, p

Book excerpt: While in the late 1970s and early 1980s health compliance research on adults represented a vigorous field of study, a marked decline of interest on the topic set in during the last part of the 1980s. By contrast, research on health compliance involving pediatric populations was less popular during the same period; however, interest in this topic -- as evidenced by the contributions to this volume -- is on the increase. Four main themes -- relating to theory, measurement, prevention, and intervention -- emerge and are interwoven among the chapters. These themes help to bind and unify the volume into a conceptual whole because although the sections are divided along thematic lines, contributors often include elements of some or all of the themes in their chapters. This state of affairs reflects the interdependence of these thematic issues and suggests how important they are for the state of the art.

However, several issues have limited the success of this technique in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes. Contemporary studies support the use of insulin pen technology among diabetic youth because it offers a less complicated way of insulin dispensation that allows them to be more active in their own diabetes care, resulting in increased acceptability and adherence to insulin therapy as well as improved glycemic control. This proposal outlines the process for establishing strict use of insulin pen devices in the school setting to improve self-efficacy and diabetes management in the school-aged population.
