Book excerpt: This invaluable book focuses on the mechanisms of formation of a solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the electrode surfaces of lithium-ion batteries. The SEI film is due to electromechanical reduction of species present in the electrolyte. It is widely recognized that the presence of the film plays an essential role in the battery performance, and its very nature can determine an extended (or shorter) life for the battery. In spite of the numerous related research efforts, details on the stability of the SEI composition and its influence on the battery capacity are still controversial. This book carefully analyzes and discusses the most recent findings and advances on this topic.

Their application areas are growing continuously. For their commercial application in electromobility and stationary storage, high energy density, high rate capability and long cycle life is required. This work demonstrates the improvement in energy density and rate capability of LiFePO4 composite positive electrodes by replacing conventional binders with conducting polymers such as polyaniline (PANI), poly-o-methoxy aniline (POMA), poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS). Conducting polymers act in a dual role as binder and conducting additive in the positive composite electrode. The capacity and charging rate capability of the electrodes are improved by using PANI and POMA. However, due to their inherent lower conductivity in the emeraldine state, complete replacement of carbon additive is not possible. On the other hand in this work it is shown that PEDOT:PSS is stable and highly conducting in the working potential window of LiFePO4 electrodes (2.8-4 V). Hence composite electrodes free of any carbon additive are prepared with PEDOT:PSS and LiFePO4. In order to understand the flow behaviour of composite slurries with different solid content; rheological measurements is performed with rheometer. All slurries show solid-like behavior due to formation of a network structure of LiFePO4 bridged by PEDOT:PSS chains. However, the solid loading of the slurries influences the distribution of the agglomerates and the binder affecting also the thickness, the adhesion and the electrical conductivity of the coatings casted from the different slurries under the same conditions. The optimum electrochemical performance is achieved with slurries containing 40 % solid loading. The electrochemical performance and the cycling stability of the composite electrodes are compared to the behaviour of conventional positive electrodes with carbon additives and PVDF binder. With increasing PEDOT:PSS content a decrease in the overvoltage and correspondingly an improvement in the rate capability is observed. Composite electrodes containing 8% PEDOT:PSS show comparable electrode capacity and better cycling stability as compared to conventional PVDF based system. engl.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes efforts to develop a new class of battery electrode matrices based on conducting polymers. In the introduction section, a summary of Li-ion battery architecture is briefly provided. Following that, some technical challenges for commercializing high-energy-density Li-ion batteries are highlighted to emphasize the necessity of designing better battery electrode architectures, where electrode matrices play a key role. Electrode matrices are typically composed of adhesive binders and conductive additives. Despite being used at a small quantity in battery electrodes (less than 20 wt%), electrode matrices act as both mechanical and electrical connection frameworks for functional Li-ion batteries. The inherent issues associated with the conventional electrode matrix, polyvinylidene fluoride/carbon black (PVDF/C), are then briefly described to signify the necessity of developing alternative electrode matrices. Subsequently, research objectives and methodologies are stated to draw a roadmap towards the development of new conducting polymer-based electrode matrices. The second chapter is a comprehensive literature review, reviewing how conducting polymers are integrated into different types of rechargeable batteries in the forms of binders and electrode matrices. The review chapter also reveals several research gaps in designing and understanding electrode binders/matrices derived from conducting polymers. The third chapter demonstrates an initial effort in developing inexpensive, self-conductive, water-processable conducting polymer-based electrode matrices from pyrrole and carboxymethyl cellulose. By performing in situ chemical polymerization of pyrrole in an aqueous solution of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, composites of polypyrrole and carboxymethyl cellulose (PPy:CMC) are synthesized and then characterized. The study has proven that PPy:CMC composites are functional electrode matrices in terms of electrical conductivity and adhesion/cohesion efficiency. Without adding additional binders and conductive additives, LiCoO2/PPy:CMC cathodes perform as good as LiCoO2/PVDF/C reference cathodes. Chapter 4 demonstrates the application of PPy:CMC composites as electrode matrices for LiNi1/3¬Mn1/3Co1/3O2, which is an industry-relevant cathode material. Chapter 5 is dedicated to investigating the degradation of LiCoO2/PPy:CMC cathodes by means of electrochemical and post-mortem analyses. Several hypotheses on the degradation mechanism of LiCoO2/PPy:CMC cathodes are drawn and investigated. The last Chapter summarizes research outcomes and suggests potential research directions to expand the understanding and application of conducting polymer-based electrode matrices in Li-ion batteries and beyond.

Book excerpt: Every electrochemical source of electric current is composed of two electrodes with an electrolyte in between. Since storage capacity depends predominantly on the composition and design of the electrodes, most research and development efforts have been focused on them. Considerably less attention has been paid to the electrolyte, a battery’s basic component. This book fills this gap and shines more light on the role of electrolytes in modern batteries. Today, limitations in lithium-ion batteries result from non-optimal properties of commercial electrolytes as well as scientific and engineering challenges related to novel electrolytes for improved lithium-ion as well as future post-lithium batteries.

Book excerpt: This volume documents the proceedings of the International Symposium on Adhesive Joints: Formation, Characteristics and Testing held under the auspices of the Division of Polymer Mater ials:Science and Engineering of the American Chemical Society in Kansas City, MO, September 12-17, 1982. There is a myriad of applications (ranging from aerospace to surgery) where adhesives are used to join different materials, and concomitantly the understanding of the behavior of adhesive joints becomes very important. There are many factors which can influence the behavior of adhesive joints, e.g., substrate preparation, in terfacial aspects, joint design, mode of stress, external environ ment, etc., and in order to understand the joint behavior in a holistic manner, one must take due cognizance of all these germane factors. So this symposium was planned to address not only how to make acceptable bonds but their characterization, durability and testing were also accorded due consideration.

Book excerpt: This book covers both the fundamental and applied aspects of advanced Na-ion batteries (NIB) which have proven to be a potential challenger to Li-ion batteries. Both the chemistry and design of positive and negative electrode materials are examined. In NIB, the electrolyte is also a crucial part of the batteries and the recent research, showing a possible alternative to classical electrolytes – with the development of ionic liquid-based electrolytes – is also explored. Cycling performance in NIB is also strongly associated with the quality of the electrode-electrolyte interface, where electrolyte degradation takes place; thus, Na-ion Batteries details the recent achievements in furthering knowledge of this interface. Finally, as the ultimate goal is commercialization of this new electrical storage technology, the last chapters are dedicated to the industrial point of view, given by two startup companies, who developed two different NIB chemistries for complementary applications and markets.
