A stratified random sampling technique was used to select a sample from each educators’ category out of a total population of 6745 educators. A total of 713 respondents (382 teachers, 65 kindergarten educators and 266 learning support educators) took part in the study. The data collecting tool used was a questionnaire with close-ended questions. SurveyMonkey and MS Excel built-in tools were used to analyse and present the quantitative data collected. The Maltese Government has highly invested in its educational sector intending to achieve a better learning outcome rate and decrease the number of early school leavers. To reach its targets, the education expenditure rate in 2017 compared to Malta’s GDP was 4.9% which was above the EU average. Furthermore, in 2018, the budget for Education was even higher due to an increase in educators’ salaries. The Maltese educational sector, which is under the remit of the Ministry of Education and Employment (MEDE), employs 9871 people which is a substantial share of the country’s public service workforce. Most of them are educators who are collectively responsible for the learning outcomes of students attending Maltese State schools (MSS). Apart from the administrative roles of College Principals, Head of Departments, Head of Schools, Assistant Heads of Schools and Education Officers, the Educators’ class is composed of three other categories which are the teachers in both primary and secondary schools, the kindergarten educators (KE’s) and the learning support educators (LSE’s). For this research study, any reference to the Educators class is referring to the categories of teachers, KE’s and LSE’s.

In order to perform their tasks adequately and effectively in school during the interaction with students, teachers need to display and exaggerate some emotions (Ogbonna & Harris, 2004) as well as suppress their negative emotions (Ybema & Smulders, 2002) to fit in different situations. According to Zembylas (2004) school teachers are expected to express enthusiasm and cheerfulness as a way of maintaining students‟ attention. The respondents are the directors and teachers of private schools in Busia municipality. The directors are the employers and the teacher’s employees. The variables involved are motivation as independent variable and turnover dependent variable. The knowledge gap is to find the motivators favorable for individual teachers to curb rampant turnover especially in third term when national exams are due. The research design that shall be used is the descriptive design as it gives room for both quantitative and qualitative data to be collected. The target population shall be all the fifteen schools from which 15 directors and 150 teachers will be covered making in total of 165 respondents in the municipality. The sample size will be restricted to 15 directors and 150 teachers bringing a total of 165 respondents ideal to give valid information. The data collection tools will be questionnaires which will be distributed to all the directors based on census and150 teachers who will be purposively sampled from all the private schools within the Busia muniscipality. Then the questionnaires will be analyzed and presented in tables and graphs of which the summary, conclusions and recommendations for further research will be made.

Responses were presented using descriptive statistics and analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient statistical method to confirm the hypotheses generated for the study at 5% probability level. The findings of this study reveal that there is a significant relationship between teachers’ remuneration and quality teaching in Nigeria. Based on the findings of this research study, teachers' remuneration significantly affect both extrinsic and intrinsic motivating factors, increased teacher absenteeism, teachers-students interpersonal relationships as well as commitment to work, consequently contributing to dwindling educational quality and academic performance of primary school students. As such, highly-motivated, well-trained and professionally supported teachers are crucial for an effective education system in Nigeria.

Thus making it difficult to understand what really motivates employees to perform well. The first chapter presents the background, problem statement, purpose, specific objectives, research questions, hypotheses, scope and significance of the study. Several previous scholars have attempted to relate motivation to job performance. Therefore, the purpose of the second chapter is to review literature relating to the variables in the study. It also presents the theoretical review, conceptual framework or model and literature related to the three respective objectives. The related literature is presented in line with the objectives that guided the study. It is presented in subheading of; remuneration and job performance, work environment and job performance and administrative policies and job performance. The third chapter presents a description of how the research was carried out. It gives systematic steps and key areas that were followed in the empirical part of the study. These included; the design, population, sampling strategies, data collection methods and instruments, data collection methods and instruments, data quality control, procedure and data analysis. Chapter four presents the description of the background variable of respondents, the dependent variable (job performance) and testing of hypotheses. Chapter five presents the discussion of the results of the study derived from the data presented in Chapter four basing on the respective research hypotheses. The discussion leads into varying conclusions and a number of recommendations, areas of further research are given.
