Book excerpt: U.S. born Latina/o adolescents have a disproportionately higher lifetime prevalence of mental health disorders, higher rates of school dropout, and score lower on academic achievement measures when compared to their Non-Latina/o, White or Asian peers. Given the substantial exposure to risk factors, identifying and understanding salient sources of resilience is essential to promoting and enhancing positive adjustment among Latina/o youth. Familism is a cultural value embraced by many Latina/os that has been associated with positive academic and psychosocial outcomes for Latina/os adolescents. When measured, familism commonly includes dimensions of obligation, support and family as referent. Previous studies have indicated that dimensions of familism, such as obligation and support, may differentially predict psychological well-being and academic achievement. No published studies to date have examined the differential relationships of the constructs of familism obligation and familism support values explicitly as separate predictors in the contexts of both mental health and academic achievement for Latina/o youth. The primary purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the differential predictive relationships of familism support and familism obligation values on mental health and academic achievement of Latina/o adolescents. A secondary purpose was to examine the potential moderating or mediating roles of family functioning and gender on these pathways. This study is consistent with the Cultural Ecological Transactional Theory of Resilience as a framework for describing how multiple factors may contribute to risk or resilience of Latino youth. Participants were 36 Latina/o youth between the ages of 11-15 years old in a Central Texas middle school. Results found evidence for the moderating role of family distress on the relationship between familism obligation values and GPA among both male and female Latino adolescents. Implications, limitations and areas for further research are discussed.

Book excerpt: This longitudinal study uses a cultural ecological-transactional perspective (Garcia-Coll, et. al., 1996; Kuperminc, et al., in press) to examine whether relational factors (familism and parental involvement) predict processes of motivation and achievement one year later among 199 Latino adolescents from immigrant families. Parent involvement predicted higher present-oriented and future-oriented motivation, and familism predicted higher present-oriented motivation. Future-oriented motivation predicted higher perceived school competence, while present-oriented motivation predicted lower perceived school competence. Both future and present-oriented motivation increased over time for recent immigrants significantly more than for US-reared youth. Findings suggest that 1) familism and parent involvement relate significantly to processes of achievement motivation among Latino youth 2) future-oriented and present-oriented motivation are distinct from one another and are linked to perceived school competence in unique, and inverse ways among Latino youth and 3) immigration age plays an important role in the motivational processes of Latino youth over time.

Findings demonstrated that familism is predictor of positive child's academic achievement. Some exceptions were found regarding family relationships and child's education. The study promotes discussion and further exploration about unique perspectives in family values.

Research examining predictors of Latino youth depression suggests higher familial values might buffer against youth depressive symptoms (Polo & Lopez, 2009; Zeiders et al., 2013b). However, longitudinal relationships between these variables remain largely unexamined. Furthermore, the literature on longitudinal youth depressive symptoms is mixed, with both increases and decreases being observed over time using group-centered analyses. The present study has three major aims: 1) map the trajectories of depressive symptomology among middle-school age Latino youth over the course of two years using person-centered analyses 2) examine if and how youth, parent, and dyadic (parent-youth) familism (derived using family-centered analyses) predict youth’s depressive symptom trajectories and 3) examine the role of sex and test the interactive effect of sex and youth familism on depressive symptom trajectories. Participants consisted of 133 low-income Latino youth (Mage = 11.90, SD = 0.94) from an urban public middle school in the Midwest, and a subsample of their parents (n = 91). Results indicate three youth depressive symptom trajectories (low stable, recovery, and escalating). As youth familism increased, youth were more likely to belong to the stable low trajectory, relative to the recovery trajectory. Parent and dyadic familism were not related to youth depressive symptom trajectories. Girls were more likely than boys to belong to the recovery trajectory, relative to the stable low trajectory. Sex did not moderate the relation between youth familism and youth depressive symptom trajectories. Our findings suggest using person- and family-centered approaches to analyzing longitudinal and parent-youth data (GMM and LPA, respectively) might account for mixed findings in the literature.

Book excerpt: The educational plight of Latino students in the U.S. is an increasing concern given the low achievement and attainment status of this population. Although many risk factors associated with underachievement are difficult to alter, parent educational involvement has been shown to positively impact learning outcomes. In this study, parental home- and school-based involvement practices and educational aspirations were compared in a large (n = 6085), nationally representative sample of Latino (n= 1,313) and non-Latino white (n = 4,772) first grade students. The role of these forms of involvement in predicting student achievement in third grade was then assessed. Findings indicate that Latino parents had higher educational aspirations for their children but were less involved at home and school than non-Latino white parents. Multiple hierarchical regression analysis showed that socioeconomic status and parental aspirations, respectively, were the most significant predictors of achievement among Latino and non-Latino white students, even when controlling for SES. While higher levels of school-based and lower levels of home-based educational involvement significantly predicted achievement among non-Latino white students, educational participation was not predictive of achievement among Latino students. Language status served as a meaningful barrier to Latino parent involvement. Findings suggest that educators should harness Latino parents' high aspirations for their children by making greater efforts to communicate and engage them in their native language. Future research should assess non-traditional forms of Latino parents' educational involvement and explore involvement practices that are culturally sensitive and meaningful to Latino parents.

This dissertation seeks to contextualize parental academic behaviors by examining the role of stress and family dynamics in their involvement. The first study examines how stress may interfere with the academic involvement Mexican-origin parents provide for their adolescents. Parents of ninth and tenth grade students from two high schools in Los Angeles (N = 428) completed quantitative interviews. Results revealed that chronic stress (i.e., financial strain) predicted less involvement at school--and that acute stressors (i.e., major family life events) predicted less involvement at home, even after controlling for demographics and the other stressor in each model. Furthermore, this study found that these associations were mediated by lower levels of emotional support to adolescents, but not conflict in the home or parental distress (i.e., depressive symptoms and somatic symptoms). Findings suggest that the reason that stress is associated with lower levels of involvement is because stress may limit the positive relationship quality between parents and adolescents. The second study examined parental involvement in organized after-school activities--as these are beneficial to academic achievement, but Latino students tend to be under-involved. Latino adolescents and their caretakers (N = 154) sampled from four middle schools across the Phoenix-area completed quantitative interviews. Linear regressions controlling for demographics and achievement revealed that parental support--instrumental support, verbal encouragement and activity involvement (e.g., talking to the activity leader)--was linked with adolescent reports of motivation and participation in their organized after-school activity. Furthermore, parental support was associated with higher adolescent motivation in families that reported more chaos--suggesting the importance of parental involvement, especially in disadvantaged families.
