Book excerpt: With the proliferation of the internet, coupled with the growing acceptance of the digital lifestyle and the world becoming increasingly addicted to e-business, the trend of cash transactions is now giving way to electronic payment system. Considering the rapid spread in the adoption of electronic banking as a channel for performing various bank transactions among banks in Nigeria, this study investigated the role electronic banking adoption has played in performance of organizations using a case study of commercial banks in Nigeria. Hence the objective of the study is to determine the role of e-banking on the performance of commercial banks in Nigeria. In pursuance of this objective, primary data were obtained by administering questionnaires to staff of four purposively selected banks (Ecobank, UBA, GTB and First bank). Pearson correlation was used to analyze the results obtained using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) and it was observed that banks' operational efficiency in Nigeria since the adoption of electronic banking is improved compared to the era of traditional banking. This improvement was noticed in the strength of banks, revenue and capital base, as well as in customers' loyalty. It was concluded that the introduction of new channels into their e-banking operations could drastically increase bank performance, since the more active customers are with their electronic transactions the more profitable it is for the banks.

It also reveals the use of electronic banking as significantly revolutionizing service delivery to improve customer satisfaction through the various electronic fund transfer and payment services such as the automated teller machine (ATMs), and other cards services, internet banking, mobile banking and all sorts of banks and financial institution services to speed up service delivery for and to stimulate efficiency in the entire financial system. The study recommends that banks and other financial institutions should embark upon training programme for all operational staff of all banks and public awareness should be instituted to improve the knowledge of information communication technology and for performance adequacy to support the much needed efficiency and operational effectiveness and also to control the regular system failure that customers face. The study recommends how banks and government can streamline the problem of infrastructure in the economy. Book excerpt: Given limited resources and time, the research scope is to study the effect of financial risk on financial performance of commercial banks in Nigeria. In achieving these objectives, the study collects a 7-years’ time-series data from corporate annual report and financial statements for the period 2009-2015. The choice of the years is the data availability for most of the banks during this period. Meanwhile, few banks have liquidated while some were established during this period. The selected commercial banks are listed financial institutions in the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE). Using this report, the study selects a total of sixteen Nigerian commercial banks. The choice of the banking sector is based on the pivotal role of the banking industry in triggering a financial crisis. The data used for this study are limited to annual reports, which are readily available at the Central Bank of Nigeria Statistical Database online and applies to commercial banks in Nigeria. However, the study focused on the financial risk faced by commercial banks in Nigeria, and their financial performance was aimed at addressing the challenge of ever emerging risks within the sector. It was an attempt to critically examine the various practices through which commercial banks manage various types of risks that they face, and then determine the relationship that exists between financial risk and the financial performance of banks. This study, therefore, sought to fill the gap in knowledge on the effects of financial risks on financial performance of commercial banks in Nigeria.

This study extends such investigation to Nigeria. Results are presented for tests of the two contending hypotheses of market structure on the Nigerian commercial banking industry using pooled data for the period of 1990 to 2000. Generally, the study finds evidence of a significant and positive relationship between concentration and profitability in the Nigerian banking industry and concludes that banking products and services in Nigeria are inefficiently priced. The study cautioned against the use of mergers and acquisitions as well as other related policies to managing banking crisis as these might lead to further concentration of the industry.

Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2003. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) are increasingly being recognized as vital to the economic growth and global inclusion and participation of developing countries. This book brings together both academics and practitioners to provide a comprehensive and insightful overview of ICT and development around the world. It examines the role of IT in providing new economic and industrial opportunities, in increasing access to global information and communication, in assisting small cultural and ethnic groups to overcome disadvantages of physical distance and in catalysing initiatives towards democratic decentralization and empowerment of citizens. It also critically appraises major problems such as inappropriate focus and resource allocation, and of missed opportunities. By combining comparative case studies from Africa, South and East Asia, South America and Eastern Europe with theoretical analysis, this volume synthesizes a range of issues related to the evident tensions that exist for developing countries as they try to balance global and local priorities through the adoption and use of ICTs.

Book excerpt: This book is a useful resource for government policy analysts, academics, students of higher education and business practitioners interested in African economies and the key economic issues these economies are facing in 2020. In the face of weak governance and growth globally, there is still a window of opportunity for countries in Africa to build on not only their traditional industrial capabilities, but also pave the way for positive developments in international trade and in the way governments tackle poverty and inequality. By focusing on four areas: (1) agriculture and livestock, (2) consumption, poverty and inequality, (3) financial services, employment and corporate governance, and (4) economic integration, international trade and foreign direct investment (FDI), this book presents a series of empirical studies that examine important contemporary economic issues facing Africa. The book incorporates a range of methodological approaches, with some chapters providing case study analyses while others embrace more traditional forms of econometric testing.

Book excerpt: This study assesses the determinants of banking system efficiency in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and asks what, besides the degree of efficiency, explains the low level of financial development in the region. It uses stochastic frontier analysis to measure efficiency and a generalized method of moments system to explain financial development. SSA banks are found to be generally cost-efficient, but nonperforming loans undermine efficiency, which suggests that improvement in the regulatory and credit environments should improve efficiency. The political and the economic environment have held back financial development in SSA.

Book excerpt: This paper discusses the impact of the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in the financial sector. It highlights the benefits these technologies bring in terms of financial deepening and efficiency, while raising concerns about its potential in widening the digital divide between advanced and developing economies. The paper advances the discussion on the impact of this technology by distilling and categorizing the unique risks that it could pose to the integrity and stability of the financial system, policy challenges, and potential regulatory approaches. The evolving nature of this technology and its application in finance means that the full extent of its strengths and weaknesses is yet to be fully understood. Given the risk of unexpected pitfalls, countries will need to strengthen prudential oversight.
