Book Synopsis Influence of Multi-element Ion Beam Bombardment on the Corrosion Behavior of Iron and Steel by :
Download or read book Influence of Multi-element Ion Beam Bombardment on the Corrosion Behavior of Iron and Steel written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of multi-element ion implantation on the corrosion resistance to acid solution has been studied for stainless steel, medium carbon steel, pure iron, and chromium-deposited iron. The implanted elements were Cu, Mo, Cr, Ni, Yb and Ti at doses of each species of from 5 x 1015 to 1 x 1017 cm−2 and at ion energies of up to 100 keV. The stainless steel used was 18-8 Cr-Ni, and the medium carbon steel was 0.45% C. The implanted samples were soaked in dilute sulfuric acid solution for periods up to 48 hours and the weight loss measured by atomic absorption spectroscopy. The kinetic parameter values describing the weight loss as a function of time were determined for all samples. In this paper we summarize the corrosion resistance behavior for the various different combinations of implanted species, doses, and substrates. The influence of the composition and structure of the modified surface layer is discussed. 8 refs., 5 figs., 2 tabs.

Book Synopsis High Dose Ion Implantation and Corrosion Behavior of Ferrous Metals by :
Download or read book High Dose Ion Implantation and Corrosion Behavior of Ferrous Metals written by and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are two possible approaches to applying ion implantation to the modification of the corrosion behavior of metals and alloys. The first approach is to use ion implantation to produce metastable or amorphous corrosion-resistant surface alloys that are inaccessible by conventional metallurgical techniques, and to apply them to specific applications where corrosion is a severe problem. Secondly, and of a more fundamental nature, ion implantation can be used to introduce controlled amounts of various elements into the surface of a metal as part of a research effort to identify the mechanisms responsible for certain forms of general and localized corrosion. The technique of alloying to produce more corrosion resistant materials is widely used and the choice of a particular alloying element is usually based on the fact that it will enhance the formation of a passive film or will reduce the rate of the various cathodic processes that occur on the metal's surface.
Book Synopsis Ion Implantation Metallurgy: A Study of the Composition, Structure and Corrosion Behavior of Surface Alloys Formed by Ion Implantation by :
Download or read book Ion Implantation Metallurgy: A Study of the Composition, Structure and Corrosion Behavior of Surface Alloys Formed by Ion Implantation written by and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ion implantation technique was used in order to improve the surface mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of iron and steel. Nitrogen implantation was found to improve the fatigue lifetime and cavitation resistance of 1018 steel. TEM and internal friction studies were carried out in order to determine the nature of this strengthening mechanism. Phosphorous implantation into 304 stainless steel was shown to produce a microcrystalline surface alloy saturated with P. Combined electrochemical and XPS studies revealed that the general corrosion of 304 in deaerated 1N H2SO4 is improved, this effect being due to the formation of a modified passive film. Finally, a study is reported of the radiation effects resulting from the ion implantation AS(+)yields Au and Fe(+) yields Al. The resulting surface alloys were studied using HVEM.
