Book excerpt: For thousands of years people in all parts of the world have engraved images on rock panels and stones. Images are found on large, earth bound boulders, on smaller, movable stones or on rock panels in burial chambers. A variety of images are conveyed, including people, animals, objects used by humans, abstract patterns and objects unrecognisable to us. In Norway, rock art has been found at more than 1100 sites. Many motifs occur regularly across the region, others are unique to certain sites. The design and composition of even the most common motifs vary hugely in different parts of the country according to both the era and function of the particular site. It has been a common practice to group Scandinavian rock art under two main categories: the veidekunst [hunter's art] or the Northern Tradition - associated with hunters and gatherers of the Stone Age, in the period 9000-2000 B.C; and the jordbruksristninger [agricultural petroglyphs] or the Southern Tradition - associated with people of the Bronze and early Iron Age, from approximately 1800 B.C. until about 400 AD, who practiced farming as a livelihood. Whether the images of the hunter nomads and the farmers represent two distinct and independent traditions, or whether they represent a continuous tradition encompassing changes in expression over time, is still today an unresolved issue. This book raises questions about the meanings that can be derived from the rock art of Norway and aims to study the images in the context of other traces found of the same society. Through the sites explored and the stories told, this book represents a voyage in time and space from the oldest images to the youngest, from farthest north to farthest south of the country.

Over 100 of the most complex and varied sites, containing many thousands of images, are presented in new plans and photographs. The variety and precision of the methods of recording have revealed hitherto unknown carvings and new details on many of the sites, including some of the best-known sites in all of Sweden and Norway. The images, of boats, humans, wheeled vehicles, wild and domesticated animals, ards, weapons and other symbols demonstrate great variability. A structural analysis permits some identification of particular artists, whilst the identification of dated styles of boat images allows some element of specific chronology to be presented. Over 800 rock carving sites, and their contemporary monuments, are mapped and described in terms of the evolving landscapes of the period 1500 - 300 BC. The current excavation programmes at the base of sites are outlined as well as the likely relationship between rock carvings and adjacent wetlands. Book excerpt: As in many other areas in south Scandinavia, the region surrounding the city of Simrishamn in south-east Scania has a great many Bronze Age mounds that are still visible in the landscape, and records from the museums demonstrate that the area is rich in bronze metalwork. Nevertheless, it is the figurative rock art that makes this region stand out as distinct from surrounding areas that lack such images. The rock art constitutes a spatially well-defined tradition that covers the Bronze Age and the earliest Iron Age, c. 1700–200 BC and, although the number of sites is comparatively small, a characteristic and unusual feature is the large representation of various kinds of metal axes. Significantly these images are tightly distributed inside the core zone of metal consumption in southernmost Scandinavia. This beautifully illustrated new addition to the Swedish rock Art series presents a detailed reassessment of the Simrishamn rock art and examines the close relationship between iconography displayed on metals and that found in rock art. in so doing it raises some important questions of principle concerning the current understanding of the south Scandinavian rock art tradition.
