The awakened populace ultimately embarks on a journey of non-violent resistance... These people, seers, and sages of different cultures, have reported what they have seen there. One of them was a Finnish spiritual teacher Pekka Ervast (1875-1934). This book contains Ervast's teachings on the afterlife: He tells of the phases and states people will undergo after they pass through the door of death. Ervast had a profound spiritual awakening at the age of twenty. He then became a pioneer of the Finnish theosophical movement. A brief outline of his life is available at https://theosophy.wiki/en/Pekka_Ervast. Ervast wrote and lectured regularly for over 30 years on the multitude of spiritual topics. Some of his books have been published in English: e.g., The Sermon on the Mount, or the Key to Christianity; "H. P. B.": Four Episodes from the Life of the Sphinx of the Nineteenth Century; The Key to the Kalevala; The Divine Seed: The Esoteric Teachings of Jesus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This exploration of Richmond's burial landscape over the past 300 years reveals in illuminating detail how racism and the color line have consistently shaped death, burial, and remembrance in this storied Southern capital. Richmond, Virginia, the former capital of the Confederacy, holds one of the most dramatic landscapes of death in the nation. Its burial grounds show the sweep of Southern history on an epic scale, from the earliest English encounters with the Powhatan at the falls of the James River through slavery, the Civil War, and the long reckoning that followed. And while the region's deathways and burial practices have developed in surprising directions over these centuries, one element has remained stubbornly the same: the color line. But something different is happening now. The latest phase of this history points to a quiet revolution taking place in Virginia and beyond. Where white leaders long bolstered their heritage and authority with a disregard for the graves of the disenfranchised, today activist groups have stepped forward to reorganize and reclaim the commemorative landscape for the remains of people of color and religious minorities. In Death and Rebirth in a Southern City, Ryan K. Smith explores more than a dozen of Richmond's most historically and culturally significant cemeteries. He traces the disparities between those grounds which have been well-maintained, preserving the legacies of privileged whites, and those that have been worn away, dug up, and built over, erasing the memories of African Americans and indigenous tribes. Drawing on extensive oral histories and archival research, Smith unearths the heritage of these marginalized communities and explains what the city must do to conserve these gravesites and bring racial equity to these arenas for public memory. He also shows how the ongoing recovery efforts point to a redefinition of Confederate memory and the possibility of a rebirthed community in the symbolic center of the South. The book encompasses, among others, St. John's colonial churchyard; African burial grounds in Shockoe Bottom and on Shockoe Hill; Hebrew Cemetery; Hollywood Cemetery, with its 18,000 Confederate dead; Richmond National Cemetery; and Evergreen Cemetery, home to tens of thousands of black burials from the Jim Crow era. Smith's rich analysis of the surviving grounds documents many of these sites for the first time and is enhanced by an accompanying website, www.richmondcemeteries.org. A brilliant example of public history, Death and Rebirth in a Southern City reveals how cemeteries can frame changes in politics and society across time.

Book excerpt: THE LAST LINE. THE LAST WORDS. THE LAST CHANCE. Ifferon is one of the last in the bloodline of the dead god Telm, who mated with mortal women, and who imprisoned the Beast Agon in the Underworld. Armed with a connection to the estranged gods in the Overworld and a scroll bearing Telm's powerful dying words, he is tasked with ensuring the god's vital legacy: that Agon remain vanquished. Fear forces Ifferon to abandon his duty, but terror restores his quest when the forces of Agon find his hideaway in an isolated coastal monastery. Weighed down by the worries of the world, but lifted up by the companions he encounters along the way, Ifferon embarks on a journey that encompasses the struggles of many peoples, the siege of many lands, and discoveries that could bring hope to some-or doom to all.

Book excerpt: In front of the barrel, there are no enemies or prey, only the soul holding the gun filled with sinful desires. And the misfired hunting rifle will ultimately slay that desire-laden soul. The moment the barrel turns, it becomes the gateway to the soul's rebirth. The truths and verities of this world are immortal. If the truth cannot be exposed, if there is no resistance, the oppressors will place heavier and greater chains upon people! The seeds of a lie will only give rise to more lies, never yielding the fruits of benevolent truth. The lies did not disappear with the death of Dr. Li Wenliang, but rather grew larger like a snowball rolling because people did not resist, because there was no justice, and the truth remained undisclosed! Truth is singular, and only by finding that singular truth can one awaken to a purposeful life! Anyone willing to servilely submit to all forms of authority, once such a person obtains power, will undoubtedly subject those under their control to even greater enslavement. All the human catastrophes we have experienced should warn future generations never to repeat or replicate the disasters and evils. Human nature often involuntarily surrenders to power and wickedness, thus comfortably becoming a servant submissive to evil. Those with free will must endure struggles and battles against this world, enduring soul-purgatory-like pain to liberate their souls from the shackles of evil. If people fear evil and dare not be upright, they only deserve the worst world and the worst life. A person devoid of compassion and belief in the existence of hell will undoubtedly turn this world into hell. Everyone is a lamp, and if not ignited, merely scrap metal; only fulfilling one's mission can ignite the light of life. The Tathagata/God, long ago, predetermined all of humanity's scripts, and understanding the script's purpose is the meaning of one's existence within the play.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A gold mine of information for American social scientists. It is a 'must have.'" -Choice "Calling in the Soul" (Hu Plig) is the chant the Hmong use to guide the soul of a newborn baby into its body on the third day after birth. Based on extensive original research conducted in the late 1980s in a village in northern Thailand, this ethnographic study examines Hmong cosmological beliefs about the cycle of life as expressed in practices surrounding birth, marriage, and death, and the gender relationships evident in these practices. The social framework of the Hmong (or Miao, as they are called in China, and Meo, in Thailand), who have lived on the fringes of powerful Southeast Asian states for centuries, is distinctly patrilineal, granting little direct power to women. Yet within the limits of this structure, Hmong women wield considerable influence in the spiritually critical realms of birth and death. Patricia Symonds situates her study within the landscape of northern Thai mountain life and anthropological perspectives on the Hmong, and then focuses on "Flower Village," telling detailed stories of births, marriages, and deaths. Recurring motifs emerge: the complementarity of women's and men's roles in daily life and in the otherworld, and their reversal at critical moments; the importance of the brother-sister relationship; the social and spiritual significance of the ceremonial clothing women create, especially their embroidered "flower cloth" and the ambiguously nuanced sev, or "modesty aprons," they wear; the endlessly cyclical nature of life, from birth to death to birth again; the importance of sound and silence at times of transition; the complex connections between the land of the living and the land of the dead. Hmong women's primary source of power in the patriline is their fecundity, through which they influence key spiritual aspects of the life cycle. This value and power is evident in the division of bride-price into two parts: "milk and care money," which compensates a woman's parents for her upbringing; and payment for the "birth shirt," or placenta, of the child the young wife will produce. Through provision of birth shirts for fetuses and of elaborately embroidered cloth shirts for the dead, women literally clothe the soul through cycles of rebirth. An epilogue and appendixes provide a discussion of the impact of HIV/AIDS on the Hmong of Thailand, cultural factors in HIV transmission, and strategies for containment; complete Hmong texts and English translations of "Calling in the Soul," and "Showing the Way," the chant which guides the soul of the deceased through the land of darkness and back to reincarnation in a new body in the land of light; Flower Village demographic information; and an account of a shamanic healing and outline of Hmong health care issues in the United States. Calling in the Soulwill be of interest to sociocultural anthropologists, medical anthropologists, Southeast Asianists, and gender specialists. Patricia V. Symondsis adjunct associate professor of anthropology at Brown University. She is the coauthor (with Brooke G. Schoepf) ofHIV/AIDS: The Global Pandemic and Struggles for Control. "Despite the now quite substantial literature on the Hmong, until now, there has been very little that explores gender issues. . . .Calling in the Soulalso makes a substantial contribution to our knowledge about Hmong death rites and religious beliefs." - Charles Keyes, University of Washington "The volume's strength is its ethnography, . . . in the numerous engaging accounts of particular events - marriages, births, etc." - Nicola Tannebaum, Lehigh University "A fascinating ethnography. Its firm grounding in an ethnic minority village in Thailand provides an interesting setting for thinking about the life cycle." - Hjorleifur Jonsson, Arizona State University
