Book Synopsis Landscape, Place and Culture by : Deb Narayan Bandyopadhyay
Download or read book Landscape, Place and Culture written by Deb Narayan Bandyopadhyay and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-01-18 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays takes an interdisciplinary approach to the ecological, social, economic and, in particular, the cultural dimensions of the Australia-India relationship. The essays provide many levels of focus on environment, place and culture. Some evoke appreciation of particular “places,” either in India or Australia. Many explore how literature has treated “landscape,” while some are comparative studies of cultural, historical and political development. The essays arise from a particular gathering of scholars: The East India chapter of the Indian Association for the Study of Australia (IASA) held its inaugural international conference in Kolkata on 22–23 January 2009. Much of the work is comparative, exploring common Indian and Australian themes of colonial and postcolonial experience, implications of migration and diaspora, and shared language and literature. The work also explores shared environmental crisis, manifest in landscapes such as the Mouths of the Ganges and Australia’s Murray Darling Basin. Such comparisons indicate our shared experience of the “crisis” of ecological, social, economic and cultural sustainability. As human future is colonized through environmental degradation, and determined by human migration and shared culture and values, our relationship to “place” is revitalized and reassessed. We seek simultaneously a reconciliation between humans and a realignment of the human-nature relationship. This is the most basic meaning of social and ecological sustainability.

Book excerpt: While from the north, the mighty Medo-Persian army threatens the very existence of the great Neo-Babylonian Empire; within the city of Babylon, a secretive and defiant resistance movement has set itself against the reckless overindulgent King, Belshazzar, and is collaborating with the Persians against him. Amidst the subterfuge and the stringent measures taken by the king to quell this rebellion, the princess and her lover Eli, a Hebrew, are struggling to make sense of a relationship marred by the huge social and religious gap which separates their two cultures and religions. They find themselves caught between the resistance and the invading Persians, and only manage to escape the chaos with the help of two dissonant palace officials and the leaders of the Hebrew community. Their escape, however is hampered by the injuries Eli has sustained at the hands of the palace guards and the princess is forced to leave Babylon without him. Later he sets out on the camel trail to find her, and after running the gauntlet between the desert and the Bedouin bandits, he eventually meets up with her on the camel trail to Jerusalem and their new adventure is about to begin.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A frank, graphic, autobiographical account of white colonial rule in Africa, first published in an English translation nearly eighty years after it was written. "I wish that I could have seen this book when I was conducting my research in the early 1990s" - Professor Dr Jan-Bart Gewald, Leiden University "A vivid and detailed experience... one gets goose-bumps just reading it" - Dr Martha Akawa, University of Namibia In 1942, in a Cape Town boarding house, Eugen Mansfeld painstakingly typed out his life story, in German, on 179 pages of lined paper. He was entirely alone: one son killed during the Nazi invasion of Normandy; two other sons interned in South Africa; his wife trapped while holidaying in Germany at the outbreak of the Second World War. Mansfeld's autobiography spanned seventy years. Buying ostrich feathers and antelope pelts in the Eastern Cape in the 1890s; managing farms and trading in the remote canyons and deserts of German South-West Africa (now Namibia); fighting to preserve German colonial rule in a bloody, genocidal war against the Herero people in 1904-5; robbing Bushman graves to add to his grotesque collection of skulls; picking up gemstones from the desert sands during the diamond rush in the 1900s; and taking arms in a desert campaign against the British Empire during the First World War. Grave-robber; soldier; diamond-dealer; executioner; horse-trader... Mansfeld's personal history of the "scramble for Africa" is gritty, shocking and unashamed; a scarce autobiographical account of the brutality and inhumanity of the colonisation process published for the first time nearly eighty years after its creation.
