Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Standard History of Freemasonry in the State of New York: Including Lodge, Chapter, Council, Commandery and Scottish Rite BodiesThe effort has been made to write a veritable history, not a mere summary of volumes of proceedings; to write a volume which would give any reader an idea of the story of Freemasonry in the Empire State, and at the same time be so purely and suf ficiently Masonic as to warrant the attention of the most devoted member of the fra ternity. Comparativelv little has been said of the history of the ritual, for it was felt that that subject could not, with any degree of fullness, be properly treated in a work of this kind - if, indeed, it were wise to treat it at all in a printed book - and mere details of legislation have been passed by with, at best, but brief mention. Yet no attempt has been made to ignore any thread which gave the slightest color to the mass, and all events of moment, such as the troubles of 1823 or 1837, the Morgan excitement, and the like, have been fully and carefully considered.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: All Masonic ritual makes use of the architectural symbolism of the tools of the medieval operative stonemason. Freemasons, as speculative masons (meaning philosophical building rather than actual building), use this symbolism to teach moral and ethical lessons of the principles of "Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth".Two of the principal symbolic tools always found in a Lodge are the square and compasses. Some Lodges and rituals explain these tools as lessons in conduct: for example, that Masons should "square their actions by the square of virtue" and to learn to "circumscribe their desires and keep their passions within due bounds toward all mankind". However, as Freemasonry is non-dogmatic, there is no general interpretation for these tools (or any Masonic emblem) that is used by Freemasonry as a whole. These moral lessons are communicated in performance of allegorical ritual. A candidate progresses through degrees gaining knowledge and understanding of himself, his relationship with others and his relationship with the Supreme Being (as per his own interpretation). While the philosophical aspects of Freemasonry tend to be discussed in Lodges of Instruction or Research, and sometimes informal groups, Freemasons, and others, frequently publish to varying degrees of competence studies that are available to the public. Any mason may speculate on the symbols and purpose of Freemasonry, and indeed all masons are required to some extent to speculate on masonic meaning as a condition of advancing through the degrees. There is no one accepted meaning and no one person "speaks" for the whole of Freemasonry.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Facts and Fictions of Scottish Rite Masonry To the Chapter has been appended an organization of Royal Arch Masons, called the Council of Royal and Select Masters, and consists of two detached, or side degrees, represented in the engraving as a watch-tower attached to the Chapter. It is an institution peculiar to Masonry on this continent, and is confined almost wholly to the United States. For much of the Masonic recognition that it enjoys, it is indebted to the late Ills. Bro; Jeremy L. Cross, who devoted many years of his eventful life to the estab lishment of Councils throughout the States. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you are satisfied with regular business meetings and great fish fries, then this is NOT the Masonic book for you. This classic Masonic esoteric work is designed for the student seeking far deeper meanings in Masonry. In the words of the author: "Although the book is primarily intended for the instruction of members of the Co-Masonic Order, whose desire, as is expressed in their ritual, is to pour the waters of esoteric knowledge into the Masonic vessels, I hope nevertheless that it may appeal to a wider circle, and may perhaps be of use to some of those many Brn. in the masculine Craft who are seeking for a deeper interpretation of Masonic symbolism than is given in the majority of their Lodges ..." C.W. Leadbeater (1854-1934), was an English clergyman and respected theosophical author. Leadbeater is the author of the popular "Freemasonry and Its Ancient Mystic Rites." This is an indespensible work for the esoteric Mason. Foreword by Annie Besant.

Book excerpt: The ethics and philosophy of Freemasonry depend on monotheistic religions and the ancient constitution of the Freemasons. The constitution describes the rules and rituals that members must follow. Some of the ceremonies incorporate stonemasonry tools, which symbolize not only the construction of Solomon’s Temple, but also the forging of partnerships. While masonic practices are cloaked in secrecy, this collection gathers the best-known sources portraying the statutes, laws, symbols, rituals, and customs of Masonic societies. Contents: THE PRINCIPLES OF MASONIC LAW THE SYMBOLISM OF FREEMASONRY THE MYSTERIES OF FREE MASONRY MORALS AND DOGMA OF THE ANCIENT AND ACCEPTED SCOTTISH RITE OF FREEMASONRY PROOFS OF A CONSPIRACY WASHINGTON'S MASONIC CORRESPONDENCE MASONIC MONITOR OF THE DEGREES OF ENTERED APPRENTICE
