Book excerpt: For the "Retired Blues Crew", a small group of retired LAPD police officers that meet once a month to share old war stories and enjoy each other's company, accepting retirement was a hard pill to swallow. Once considered savvy street warriors who risked life and limb protecting the good citizens of Los Angeles, they were now the forgotten hero's whose past heroic deeds were now only remembrances visited through their colorful story telling during their once a month get-togethers. Like all things in life, they were all expendable and the guys in the "Retired Blues Crew" had been replaced by a new generation of street warriors. To the old dogs who were put out to pasture, the new centurions were taking their places with new technology and a confidence that bordered on disrespect for those who had paved the way before them. The argument that the old days of crushing crime without the benefit of all the new-fangled gadgets was more rewarding than the technology of the future was a misconception of the new breed that were now in charge of protecting the citizens of Los Angeles. For the select group of old story tellers, they needed to add one more chapter in their lives, something for the street warriors of the present to remember them by when their time finally came and they were reduced to second class citizens too old to do the job anymore. This small tight knit group of old street warriors had enough and it was time to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that they weren't too old to out-smart and out-wit the high tech rouges who have now taken their places. Proving that computers and gadgets could never replace the wisdom and experience that the old dogs were blessed with wouldn't be an easy task, but they were determined to challenge the new breed and beat them at their own game. They knew whatever it was they were going to do couldn't replicate anything like the violent movies you see were people die, get hurt or cars get wrecked and buildings are blown up, after all they were cops or at least they were once. That being said, the old dogs had to pull off the perfect caper and they had to do it without claiming any of the bragging rights they so much yearned for. It would have to be for no other reason than "For Greater Glory." In that one of their own had been diagnosed with cancer with less than six months to live, they only had a small window of opportunity to get it done. Since he was the architect behind the perfect crime referred to as "Operation Blue Eclipse," their success would depend on how well the plan was executed with no room for error. If all went as planned and after all was said and done, the Retired Blues Crew would truly know who the best of the best was.

Book excerpt: It turned out that Robert Yugovich had to leave the gang of which he was a key part for many years. He was aware of the gravity of his actions and knew that the gang would not sit idly by and overlook the fact that he had broken the unwritten rules of the mafia. He had two choices: killing his boss his only friend still alive or fleeing with his family. Trusting the laws of the European Union, the orderliness of democracy, and the respect of human rights and dignity, under a false name he sought refuge in one of the member states of the European Union, with support from the witness protection program. He soon realized that what lied ahead of him was not what he had expected. It was doubly true for Hungary: anything could happen. Robert realized that not only the Serb mafia but the biased, unfair national justice system was after his skin. Neither the former nor the latter would refrain from hurting him without a second thought for his family. He had no other choice but to survive whatever may come and keep fighting, even if the face of hope slowly ebbed away. He didnt believe in miracles, but the real loser was the one that did not even try to win. The fight for survival, dignity, and justice still continues to this day. The reason he decided to write this book was to help others learn from his mistakes. The other reason was personal. He wanted to put reality on paper because it was disgusting how neither the truth nor reality was needed to judge or to condemn someone. Just as there were good cops, there were good criminals too and there were brutal people in the establishment as well. Truth is always where the power is.

Book excerpt: John Joseph wants men to know, in no uncertain terms, that they don’t need to eat steak, burgers, wings, ribs, or any other animal product, for that matter, to be strong—in fact, he would argue, eating animals is for the weak. Because when your protein sources come from animals, you’re missing out on all of the nutritional benefits of a plant-based diet—a diet that can make you more fit, more sexy, and more manly. In Meat is for Pussies, Joseph presents a throw-down of information, offering both personal and scientific evidence that a plant-based diet offers the best path to athleticism, endurance, strength, and overall health. In addition to handily dispelling the myths surrounding meat, Joseph offers workout advice, a meal plan, and recipes that make going plant-based easy. Flavor and vitamin-packed options like the Working Man Stew and Veggie Chili with Cornbread will keep men’s (and women’s) bodies healthy and energized, while workouts that emphasize cardio and strength training build endurance and stamina and prove that you don’t need meat to build muscle. Joseph also offers living proof that living a plant-based lifestyle is badass, from super-athlete Brendan Brazier to MMA champion Jake Shields to Joseph himself, who is an Ironman Triathlete and still rocking out (at the age of fifty-two) on world tours as the frontman for his legendary band the Cro-Mags. Joseph’s passion for educating the world about the benefits of a plant-based diet comes through on each page, in a voice and a vocabulary that is uniquely his own. At the end of the day, he wants readers to live a long, healthy, happy life . . . and he won’t take no for an answer.

Book excerpt: This monster Rock-n-Roll survey focuses on the songs and the vibrant personalities who create them, for college audiences and the general public. Dean published the world's first history of Rock in 1966. Here, in his ebullient style, he buzzes through piles of musical singles from the whole last half century, describing what is fun about each major and minor hit, pointing out what elements were exciting or new or significant in the development of musical styles. He relates some tantalizing tidbits about the earlier musical heritage that artists have drawn upon in crafting ever more amazing evolutions of rock music. This snappy, witty and informative album has universal appeal, doubling as a coffee-table trivia treasure and a college-level popular music history text. It includes hundreds of photos, chapter questions, and an extensive index. Reader-friendly and informationally complete, it covers soft rock, heavy metal, rhythm & blues, country rock and classic oldies, all with tender loving care, for the specialist and casual listener alike. Its mini-portraits of the artists who move so many hearts (and feet), the photos and the insightful sound bites get to the essence of each song and each musician's contribution to the music of our age. The single-song focus makes the book unique. It's a playlist for R'n'R professors and the general public, written with a collegiate vocabulary, tight organization and a respect for all. "Hearing Elvis for the first time was like busting out of jail." - Bob Dylan That being said, no one is being incited, here, to bust out of jail or to emulate the quixotic habits of rock stars. "There's nothing in here to hide from the kids, the clergy or grandma." Gold Rush can be used as a university or community college text, but most people will grab it for the sheer pleasure of reading about everyone's favorites. Great gift for Rock enthusiasts. Gold Rush is the first book of its kind to feature a celebration of the great single songs of the rock era and beyond. Gold Rush takes thousands of songs, spanning three centuries, and brings them back uniquely as if they came out just yesterday. Gold Rush unites the Anglo-American and later worldwide spirit of Rock and Roll in a tapestry of interconnected melodies and adventures. As Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide helps you select videos at Blockbuster, so Gold Rush is a powerful playlist for your music collection, with many new and fascinating photos of favorite stars. Gold Rush explains the most important stories behind the songs you picked to be played, the songs that 'went gold,' from the 1897 Alaska/Klondike Gold Rush to the #1 songs of today and beyond.

Book excerpt: A punk rocker’s guide to grow, learn, and appreciate the present moment—in short, to live a life that doesn’t totally suck. All Miguel Chen ever wanted was to be happy. Just like everyone else. But—also like everyone else—he’s suffered. A lot. Running from difficult personal losses—like the deaths of loved ones—was something he did for years, and it got the best of him. Eventually, though, he stopped running and started walking a spiritual path. That might be surprising for a dude in a relentlessly touring punk band (Teenage Bottlerocket), but Miguel quickly found that meditation, mindfulness, and yoga really helped. They allowed him to turn inward, to connect to himself and the world around him. Suddenly, he had found actual happiness. Miguel’s realistic. He knows it'll never be all sunshine and peaches. And yet, he is (for the most part) at peace with the world and with himself. It shocks even him sometimes. But he’s come to see the interconnectedness of all things, the beauty of life…even the parts that suck. Each short chapter ends with a hands-on practice that the reader can put into action right away—and each practice offers a distilled “TL;DR” takeaway point. TL;DR: Miguel Chen shares stories, meditations, and practices that can help us reconnect to each other, ourselves, and the world. They’ve worked for him—they can work for anyone.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Triple Bind that girls face today: • Act sweet and nice • Be a star athlete and get straight A's • Seem sexy and hot even if you're not In many ways, today is the best time in history to be a girl: Opportunities for a girl's success are as unlimited as her dreams. Yet societal expectations, cultural trends, and conflicting messages are creating what psychologist and researcher Stephen Hinshaw calls "the Triple Bind." Girls are now expected to excel at "girl skills," achieve "boy goals," and be models of female perfection, 100 percent of the time. Here, Dr. Hinshaw reveals key aspects of the Triple Bind, including • genes, hormones, and the role of biology in confronting the Triple Bind • overscheduled lives and how the high pressure to excel at everything sets girls up for crisis • how traditionally feminine qualities (such as empathy and self-awareness) can put girls at risk for anxiety, depression, and other disorders • the oversexualization of little girls, preteens, and teenagers • the reasons girls are channeling pressure into violence Combining moving personal stories with extensive research, Dr. Hinshaw provides tools for parents who want to empower their daughters to deal in healthy ways with today's pressures.
