Book excerpt: Aunt Clovice (CloVEESE) brands this memoir "foolish," but to chemist Nimrod Jones, our sapling full grown, it's "one hell of a tale." Dear Reader, you make the final judgement.Nimrod discovers a plant extract that renders others subject to his will. An ambitious co-worker, Gal Gunshannon, hairy-handed but otherwise good-looking, persuades him to accompany her to our nation's capital. There, via the extract, they will coerce Congress to deal with the obesity problem that threatens to overwhelm American society. They are successful . . . the Anti-Obesity Act of 2025 becomes law. It dictates that the enormous among us be jailed and starved under medical supervision until a respectable Body Mass Index (BMI) is restored. Nimrod and Gal become celebrities. After a period of fortune and fame, Nimrod learns that Gal has turned against him, aligning herself with opposing forces. He is labeled an enemy of freedom, an "obesist," and becomes the object of a smear campaign.Out of the blue, Hazel Hannabass, a small-eyed, vile-smelling classmate from Nimrod's college days, contacts him. She has a bold plan to rescue him and the foundering anti-obesity movement. But the stakes are high. Should they fail, it would mean prison time . . . or maybe worse.

Book excerpt: This report analyses the Annual Report and Accounts 2006-07 of the Ministry of Defence (MoD) (published as HC 697, session 2006-07, ISBN 9780102946369). The MoD's assessment of its expected achievements against its six Public Service Agreement (PSA) targets, which run until the end of March 2008, has deteriorated since the previous year's Annual Report and Accounts. At the end of 2007, the MoD did not expect to meet the target relating to generating forces and expects "only partly" to meet targets relating to recruitment and retention, and defence equipment procurement. The failure to meet the target for generating forces is a consequence of the continuing high levels of deployment of the Armed Forces. The Committee is concerned that the Armed Forces have been operating at or above the level of concurrent operations they are resourced and structured to deliver for seven of the last eight years, and for every year since 2002. Achieving manning balance in all three Service continues to be a challenge. Shortages remain within many specialist trades in all three Armed Services, but especially in the Army Medical Service. The report notes the failure to meet harmony guidelines in the Army and the Royal Air Force - another indicator of the pressure on the Armed Forces from the continuing high level of operations - and another target missed by all three services is for ethnic minority recruitment. The MoD continues to experience substantial forecast cost increases on equipment programmes, and the report notes delays in delivering equipment programmes to the planned in-service dates. The MoD faces difficult choices in the face of expected cuts in the defence programme and the management of a streamlining exercise to reduce civilian posts in the headquarters.

Download or read book America's Book written by Mark A. Noll and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022 with total page 865 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book shows how the Bible decisively shaped American national history even as that history decisively influenced the use of Scripture. It explores the rise of a strongly Protestant Bible civilization in the early United States that was then fractured by debates over slavery, contested by growing numbers of non-Protestant Americans (Catholics, Jews, agnostics), and torn apart by the Civil War. Scripture survived as a significant, though fragmented, force in the more religiously plural period from Reconstruction to the early twentieth century. Throughout, the book pays special attention to how the same Bible shone as hope for black Americans while supporting other Americans who justified white supremacy"--
Download or read book Shackleton written by Michael Smith and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-10-02 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ernest Shackleton is one of history’s great explorers, an extraordinary character who pioneered the path to the South Pole over 100 years ago and became a dominant figure in Antarctic discovery. A charismatic personality, his incredible adventures on four expeditions have captivated generations and inspired a dynamic, modern following in business leadership. None more so than the Endurance mission, where Shackleton’s commanding presence saved the lives of his crew when their ship was crushed by ice and they were turned out on to the savage frozen landscape. But Shackleton was a flawed character whose chaotic private life, marked by romantic affairs, unfulfilled ambitions, overwhelming debts and failed business ventures, contrasted with his celebrity status as a leading explorer. Drawing on extensive research of original diaries and personal correspondence, Michael Smith's definitive biography brings a fresh perspective to our understanding of this complex man and the heroic age of polar exploration.
