The specimens of work done and shown there, demonstrate that not only is the modern plumber compelled to be as skillful as his predecessors ever were in the details of his craft, but he has to become familiar with applications of these details that his grandfathers never dreamed of, and would not have understood if they had. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Plumbing Why continue to carry water for the house, for the stock or the garden, trudging through the rain and snow, when you can have running water any place you want it on the farm for such a small investment? Did you ever stop to think of the number of tons of water that are carried on the average farm in the course of a year where there is no Modern Water Supply System installed? Just stop a moment and figure the number of bucket fuls of water that you carry from the pump every day, and then figure what this amounts to in the way of hard labor in the course of a year. When this is reduced to actual figures, the result is really startling, and if those folks who continue to carry water day after day could realize how easy it is to eliminate all this unnecessary labor, we feel sure there would not be a farm home in the country without one of these Modern Water Supply Systems. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles and Practice of Plumbing In preparing the manuscript for this book, the author's sole object was to systematize and reduce to an exact basis, the principles which underlie the practice of plumbing. The necessity for accurate rules and formulas, instead of the empirical methods formerly employed, was often and forcibly brought home to the author when designing plumbing installations for large buildings. The scarcity of scientific information on this important branch of sanitation was quite marked. No book had ever been published that indicated the best kind of material to use for a given purpose, that told how work should be designed and installed to be perfectly sanitary, and that showed how to pro portion the various parts with relation to the whole, so that a plumbing system designed and installed according to the text would give perfect service. Rules and formulas for proportioning hot and cold water supply pipes were entirely lacking and no literature was available that would be of assist ance in determining this most important feature of a building. Neither could anything be had that would indicate the size of piping required to supply a given number of flushing valves for closets, nor that mentioned the numerous other conditions requiring consid'ération when designing a plumbing installation. Realizing this, the author gathered much valuable data and worked out many rules and formulas from his private practice, and the gist of the rules. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Plumbing Modern plumbing as a trade is the arranging and running of pipes to supply pure water to buildings, the erecting of fixtures for the use of this supply, and the installing of other pipes for the resulting waste water. The work of the trade divides itself therefore into two parts: first the providing an adequate supply of water; and second, the disposing of this water after use. The first division offers few problems to the plumber, little variety in the layout being possible, and the result depending mostly upon the arrangement of the pipes and fittings; but the second division calls for careful study in the arrangement, good workmanship in the install ing, and individual attention to each fixture. The trade had its beginnings in merely supplying fresh water to a community. This was done by means of trench ing, or conveying water from lakes, rivers, or springs through wooden pipes or Open troughs. By easy stages the trade improved and enlarged its scope, until at the present time it is able to provide for the adequate distribution of tons of water under high pressure furnished by the city water works. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sanitary Fittings and Plumbing During the last quarter of a century, so many books have been written on the sanitation of build ings that there would be little need for another work on any part of the subject, were it not that sanitary science is still rapidly progressing. New discoveries and inventions are continually pressing for notice, and old problems are being solved in new ways. In this book an attempt has been made to enunciate the general principles now governing the design of sanitary work in buildings, and also to describe and illustrate the most important modern sanitary fittings and the plumber's work in connection with them. No claim is made that the book is exhaustive, but the author ventures to hope that it will prove sufficiently thorough to be of use to the young architect, sanitary engineer, and plumber, and that it may also serve as a guide to the householder in the choice of fittings, and enable him to distinguish good work from bad. The greater part of the book appeared as a series of articles in T/ze Builder during the first half of this year, but fresh matter has been added to render the work more complete. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures to Plumbers According to a promise made in the preface to the first series of these lectures, and also to many private correspondents, this volume is now issued. The Author's aim is not to preach any new doctrine but to deal with details Of every-day practice, many of which are not thought of by most writers on plumbing, or are considered as being too small and trivial to be worth consideration. The successful man is the one who studies details, and it is the attention paid to small matters that either makes or mars a job in plumbers' work. Being a good lead-bosser or a good joint-wiper is not nearly sufficient Many such men make serious mistakes owing to their lack of knowledge of first principles. Quite recently a large college was inspected and a report made by the Author as to the sanitary conditions. Amongst the many defects discovered were about twelve wash-basins with the overflow pipes connected to the waste pipes on the wrong sides of the traps; and yet the joints and the bends in the pipes were made as well as they possibly could be. It is not necessary to here dwell upon other such mistakes made in the execution of plumbers' work, as numbers of cases are referred to in the following pages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bookkeeping and Cost-Finding for the Plumber The plumber, who opens up a shop of his own and em barks in business, is supposed to have learned his trade thoroughly, and, as a rule, he is a superior workman, who by industry and economy has been able to save enough to become an employer. He is seldom a business man, because his training has been in an entirely different dirce tion; The young plumber, who thinks that he can run a plumbing shop of his own successfully because he knows the mechanical end thoroughly and knows how to do goodwork, has a great deal to learn, and quite as much to forget. When a plumber becomes a proprietor he must forget in a measure that he is a plumber, and he must always have uppermost in his mind the' idea that he is a business man, whose duty it is to sell plumbing at a profitable figure. There is no fount of general information to which he can go and gather the knowledge of how to make money out of a plumbing shop. The master plumbers who have learned it do not go about advising young com petitors how to succeed, and if such do occasionally drop a word of good seasonable advice to a beginner it is ten to one that the young man in business suspects that it is a pointer given to mislead him, and he goes contrary to the advice. This is usually the case when an established plumber remonstrates with a newcomer in the field as to cutting prices. The newcomer is sure to think that the established plumber is simply worked up, because he is losing trade to him, and so the youngster in business laughs in his sleeve, and goes on cutting prices, to his own ruin and to the damage of the trade in his vicinity. It is natural that a beginner in business should think that the way to get work is to lower the prices, but the men who have been there know that the way to get customers worth having is to keep up both the quality and the price. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gray's Plumbing Design and Installation This volume is offered with the firm conviction that it is needed and will be welcomed by the majority of plumbing craftsmen. It is desired to have the reader know at the outset that a mechanic is speaking, - one who has served on a wide range of work in every capacity afforded by the trade and its interests. In some respects much of the literature devoted to the trade has not given the most needed help to a large majority, though it has catered all but too well to a minority that was prepared to succeed fairly without it. Too little has been heard from the competent man on the job. He has not sufficiently laid before the craft in his own way the problems he met in practice; how he overcame them; with what resuThe conditions under which the mass of craftsmen secure and execute their work in different sections of the country are vastly different; seventy-five per cent. Of the men interested in the business must settle their own problems from start to finish because there is none other at hand competent to design the work and point out the specific things to be done in order to get desired results. It is to be hoped that it will be ever so for it is this state of affairs that has contributed most to making the plumbing of this country superior to that of any other. It was with the above in mind that the author has worked from first to last. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
