Nanette's day is not off to a good start. Her on-again, off-again relationship with Walter is off. . . again, and when she offers a fellow busker a place to stay for the night he ends up murdered on her kitchen floor. To make matters worse, the busker turns out to have been an undercover cop. And his former partner has taken an immediate and extreme dislike to Nanette. When she finds that the dead man stashed a wad of cash in her apartment, cash that could go to help his blind girlfriend, Nanette's desire to do the right thing lands her in trouble. Soon she's on the hunt for a legendary saxophone worth its weight in gold. But there are plenty of people who would kill for the priceless instrument, and Nanette's new beau just might be one of them. Originally published in the 1990s, this stylish piece of noir is an original and page-turning read starring an unforgettable heroine. PRAISE FOR THE NANETTE HAYES MYSTERIES: 'The sweet, clear sound of Nanette's musical voice keeps us on her corner, tossing all the change we've got' The New York Times on Rhode Island Red 'This Grace Jones lookalike with a degree in French is a splendid creation' Sunday Telegraph 'A terrific novel, from those witty, subversive opening sentences, to the edgy, melancholy and very satisfying ending' Margo Jefferson, author of Negroland

Book excerpt: "In his salutatory of the first issue of the weekly newspaper L'Eco del Rhode Island, editor Federico Curzio declares that the 'Italian Colony of Providence' had increased to the point where it warranted a media source that focused on and addressed the customs, traits, and interests of the Italian diaspora of Rhode Island. The founders of L'Eco del Rhode Island came together to begin to address the journalistic and literary needs of this growing community. In his study on the immigrant press, Robert E. Park argues, 'In addition to every other reason for the existence of a foreign-language press is its value to the immigrant, in satisfying his mere human desire for expression in his mother tongue.' In the late nineteenth century the Italian diaspora of Rhode Island, having become a substantial immigrant community within the state, yearned for a medium which would reflect their culture, written in their madre lingua. In later years this penchant for the Italian language would manifest itself in radio programs in addition to the Italian language newspapers."

This book was released on 2013-04-23 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a frigid day in 1843, Amasa Sprague, a wealthy Yankee mill owner, left his mansion to check on his cattle. On the way, he was accosted and beaten beyond recognition, and his body was left facedown in the snow. What followed was a trial marked by judicial bias, witness perjury and societal bigotry that resulted in the conviction of twenty-nine-year-old Irish-Catholic John Gordon. He was sentenced to hang. Despite overwhelming evidence that the trial was flawed and newly discovered evidence that clearly exonerated him, an anti-Irish Catholic establishment refused him a new trial. On February 14, 1845, John Gordon became the last victim of capital punishment in Rhode Island. Local historian Paul F. Caranci brings this case to life, graphically describing the murder and exposing a corrupt judicial system, a biased newspaper and a bigoted society responsible for the unjust death of an innocent man.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hidden History of Rhode Island delivers the best Ocean State stories you've never heard before. Surprising tales and unexpected anecdotes color Rhode Island's legacy, from the accounts of its three brave Titanic survivors to the whirlwind Revolutionary War romance between a Smithfield girl and a French viscount. Rhode Island historian Glenn Laxton uncovers the exceptional citizens whom history has forgotten, like Robert the Hermit, a man who endured three escapes from slavery before finding liberty and peace in Rumford; the illustrious Lippitt family, who spearheaded advancements in deaf education; and Christiana Bannister, a Narragansett tribe member, nineteenth-century entrepreneur and wife to the most successful African American artist of the time. With moments of tragedy, as in the Lexington steamboat disaster, as well as triumph, as in the case of small-town boy turned baseball hero Joe Connolly, Laxton reveals Rhode Island beneath the surface.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a distressed urban neighborhood gentrifies, all the ratios change: poor to rich; Black and Brown to white; unskilled to professional; vulnerable to secure. Vacant lots and toxic dumps become condos and parks. Upscale restaurants open and pawn shops close. But the low-income residents who held on when the neighborhood was at its worst, who worked so hard to make it better, are gradually driven out. For them, the neighborhood hasn’t been restored so much as destroyed. Tracing the history of Olneyville, a neighborhood in Providence, Rhode Island, that has traveled the long arc from urban decay to the cusp of gentrification, Joseph Margulies asks the most important question facing cities today: Can we restore distressed neighborhoods without setting the stage for their destruction? Is failure the inevitable cost of success? Based on years of interviews and on-the-ground observation, Margulies argues that to save Olneyville and thousands of neighborhoods like it, we need to empower low-income residents by giving them ownership and control of neighborhood assets. His model for a new form of neighborhood organization—the “neighborhood trust”—is already gaining traction nationwide and promises to give the poor what they have never had in this country: the power to control their future.
