Book excerpt: The essays in Nuances of Blackness in the Canadian Academy make visible the submerged stories of Black life in academia. They offer fresh historical, social, and cultural insights into what it means to teach, learn, research, and work while Black. In daring to shift from margin to centre, the book’s contributors confront two overlapping themes. First, they resist a singular construction of Blackness that masks the nuances and multiplicity of what it means to be and experience the academy as Black people. Second, they challenge the stubborn durability of anti-Black tropes, the dehumanization of Blackness, persistent deficit ideologies, and the tyranny of low expectations that permeate the dominant idea of Blackness in the white colonial imagination. Operating at the intersections of discourse and experience, contributors reflect on how Blackness shapes academic pathways, ignites complicated and often difficult conversations, and reimagines Black pasts, presents, and futures. This unique collection contributes to the articulation of more nuanced understandings of the ways in which Blackness is made, unmade, and remade in the academy and the implications for interrelated dynamics across and within post-secondary education, Black communities in Canada, and global Black diasporas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first wave of Black immigrants arrived in North America during the 1960s and 1970s, coming originally from the Caribbean. An opportunity was missed, however, in documenting their everyday experience from a social science perspective: what did it mean for a Barbadian or a Jamaican to live in Toronto or New York? Were they Jamaicans or did they go with the descriptor ‘Black’? What relationship did they have with African Canadians or African Americans? Black Immigrants in North America answers these and other questions while documenting the second wave of Black immigration to North America, which started in the early 1990s. Theoretically and empirically grounded, the book is a documentation of the process of becoming Black – a radical identity transformation where a continental African is marked by Blackness. This, in turn, leads to a deeper understanding of what it means to encounter that social imaginary of, ‘Oh, they all look like Blacks to me!’ This encounter impacts what one learns and how one learns it, where learning English as a Second Language (ESL) is sidestepped in favor of Black English as a Second Language (BESL). Learning becomes a political and a pedagogical project of cultural, linguistic and identity investment and desire. Perfect for courses such as: Black Immigrants, Race Complexity, Critical Applied Linguistics, Ethnography, Graduate Course on Educational Foundations and Curriculum

Book excerpt: "Western Medicine", "Alternative Medicine", "Complementary Medicine", "Holistic Medicine", and "Natural Medicine." There is really only one "medicine" that heals and puts the whole patient, not the disease, at the center of care: Integrated Medicine. This practice integrates all modalities of healing to produce not merely a medical cure, but a deeper healing of the patient on his or her own terms. The Clinical Practice of Complementary, Alternative, and Western Medicine is a scientifically based text that informs and leads the practitioner easily through the maze of alternative therapies. Unlike other books that address the different alternative modalities, this text integrates homeopathy, acupuncture, chinese herbology, western herbology, and clinical nutrition, then combines them with traditional medicine. The author explains the new paradigm of patient-centered and Integrated Medicine and includes an extensive section on the physical underpinnings of this new paradigm, a paradigm that employs thermodynamics, non linear dynamics, chaos theory, and fractal geometry in an easy to understand discourse. The book incorporates the author's fundamental training in the alternative modalities and his ten years of clinical practice, a practice in which multiple integrated modalities of healing were utilized in the healing of over 10,000 patients. The Clinical Practice of Complementary, Alternative, and Western Medicine is a tremendously valuable reference for practitioners who want to learn about and practice alternative therapies and those who want to be more informed about what their patients may be doing and taking, and the influences those self-administered therapies may be having on their care.

Book excerpt: This volume is a pause, an attempt to create a cartography of the ever-shifting and ever-changing process of métissagebetween Blackness, Indigeneity and Hip-Hop. In essence, the volume is an ode to Hip-Hop, a gesture of love and an acknowledgement of that beautiful circle in and around which Blackness and Indigeneity meet by the grace of Hip-Hop. In and around that circle, Hip-Hop emerges as a site of identification and investment; that is, how and why Indigenous and Black youth are investing so heavily in Hip-Hop. As forms of worlding, Hip-Hop encodes processes and practices within the spoken words, the arrangement of bodies and beats- to choreograph consent- a practice inherent in the cypher. The volume brings innovative criticality to the intersections of Hip-Hop, Blackness and Indigeneity. These intersections are rarely explored and this volume is a rare attempt to explore how and why Hip-Hop emerges as a site of identification and investment for Black and Indigenous people, especially the young, as they journey in their social, historical and political struggle. Book excerpt: Medicinal plants and their derived products remain as an indispensable source of bioactive molecules that serve as either drug candidates or lead compounds for drug design and discovery. There are several advantages for plant-derived therapeutics including wide availability, diverse pharmacological actions and a generally good profile of safety and tolerability. Over the recent years, there have been numerous reports from clinical studies testifying to the efficacy and safety of medicinal plants and phytochemicals in ameliorating several human diseases. A plethora of basic studies has also unravelled molecular mechanisms underlying the health benefits of herbal medicines. Nevertheless, issues such as identification of bioactive ingredients, standardization of the products and drug interactions remain to be further studied. In this book, we aim to put together several chapters on the medicinal properties and pharmacological action of medicinal plants, plant species and phytochemicals. The goal is to present a comprehensive collection on most of the therapeutic aspects of plant-derived natural products and molecular mechanisms thereof.
