The first half of the book employs the theories of Kenneth Burke in tandem with ancient and Early-Modern rhetorical theory to examine Elizabethan and Jacobean expressions of social desire (sexual, political, economic, etc.). It demonstrates how Donne employed these modes of courtship to stimulate and direct his audience's thought and desire with respect to matters of religious devotion. The second half of the book applies this socio-rhetorical paradigm of courtship in close-readings of three Donne sermons. This study will be of interest to scholars and students of Early-Modern literature and rhetoric and to those interested in homiletics and devotional literature." --

Book excerpt: This volume of John Donne's writings begins with a biography of John Donne's life, as told by Donne's writer friend, Izaak Walton. Walton gives readers a close look at Donne's past, which was plagued with the loss of many close family members. This biographical information helps readers to make better sense of the somber devotions contained in this volume. In his Devotions upon Emergent Occasions, Donne concentrates on the miserable condition of man and the inevitability of death. The devotions are all structured the same, each beginning with a meditation followed by an expostulation and a prayer. These devotions serve as a preview for Donne's "Death's Duel Sermon," written near his death in 1631 as his funeral sermon. While "Death's Duel" paints a grave picture of earthly life tormented by pain and death, it hopes for a bright future in God's love through Christ's resurrection and ascension. -Emmalon Davis, CCEL Staff Writer

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rhetoric of John Donne's Verse: A Dissertation The third chapter deals with a yet practically untouched aspect of the criticism of English verse; The revelation of Donne's secret came to me suddenly after three years of daily, almost hourly, entreating, caressing, and wheedling of each line of his poetry.1 At first the thing seemed improbable; but, at the same time, it was so real and so plain as to give one that uncanny feeling experienced by those who dare to meddle with the affairs of 'some old lover's ghost.' Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1623 John Donne, dean of Saint Paul's Cathedral in London, suddenly fell ill of a pestilential illness. He took notes during this near fatal illness and published them as Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions in 1624. It is in the context of devotional literature that this book has formerly been studied. If, however, the work is read with specific attention focused on the dynamics of Donne's psychological responses to a serious illness, it may be seen to be the powerful dramatic presentation of his struggle for emotional and spiritual survival following the disruption of a previously accepted value system. Our population today has experienced many of these feelings in facing illness, isolation, and death during the course of COVID-19. We are all Donne. He gives us a voice from four hundred years in the past.

Book excerpt: Devotions upon Emergent Occasions is a 1624 prose work by the English theologian and writer John Donne, Dean of St. Paul's Cathedral in London. It is a series of reflections that were written as Donne recovered from a serious illness. The work consists of twenty-three parts ('devotions') describing each stage of the sickness. Each part is further divided into a Meditation, an Expostulation (or objection) , and a Prayer. The work is an excellent example of seventeenth century English spirituality and sometimes feels a bit dated. Yet much solid nourishment can be found. "Death's Duel" is Donne's last sermon prepared for presentation before the King during Lent; it is commonly seen as Donne's own funeral oration. The biographical material is from Izaak Walton's Lives. The most famous part of the Devotions is number XVII, containing these lines: No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were: any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bells tolls; it tolls for thee.
