Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revolt in Hindustan: 1857-59 Many of the numerous correspondents who have assisted me in amplifying the Articles, published in the Times October 1907, expressed the hope that my narrative would be republished in book form, and I have now made it a short history of the principal events in India from 1857-1859. In re-submitting the studies to the Public I have practically re-written the chapters concerning the operations before Dehli; its Siege, and Capture, dealing more fully with the gallant feats of the Bengal Engineers; and I have incorporated the suggestions from correspondents, which I have been able to verify. I am grateful to the Home, Colonial, and India Press for their appreciation of the Articles, not only as regards the style of the narrative, but of my efforts to write fairly of the contending Races. General Sir Digby Barker, K.C.B., who accompanied Sir Henry Havelock in his Relief of the Residency of Lucknow, and was the first man to enter the Baillie Guard intrenchment through an embrasure, after some suggestions for "the very excellent history," wrote: "2nd January, 1908. I think your history is wonderfully accurate and complete, as regards the events in which I took part." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It was a major, but ultimately unsuccessful, uprising in India in 1857–58 against the rule of the British East India Company, which functioned as a sovereign power on behalf of the British Crown. The rebellion began on 10 May 1857 in the form of a mutiny of sepoys of the Company's army in the garrison town of Meerut, 40 miles northeast of Delhi (now Old Delhi). "--Provided by publisher.

Book excerpt: India's First war for Independence (aka Indian Rebellion of 1857) began as a mutiny of sepoys of the East India Company's army on 10 May 1857, in the cantonment of the town of Meerut, and soon escalated into other mutinies and civilian rebellions largely in the upper Gangetic plain and central India, with the major hostilities confined to present-day Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, northern Madhya Pradesh, and the Delhi region. The rebellion posed a considerable threat to East India Company power in that region, and was contained only with the fall of Gwalior on 20 June 1858. The rebellion is also known as India's First War of Independence, the Great Rebellion, the Indian Rebellion, the Indian Mutiny, the Revolt of 1857, the Rebellion of 1857, the Uprising of 1857, the Sepoy Rebellion and the Sepoy Mutiny. The rebellion led to the dissolution of the East India Company in 1858. It also led the British to reorganize the army, the financial system and the administration in India. The country was thereafter directly governed by the crown as the new British Raj. The 93rd (Sutherland Highlanders) Regiment of Foot was a Line Infantry Regiment of the British Army from 1799 to 1881.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book entitled, “Uprising of 1857: Some Facts about Failure of Indian War of Independence” includes much detail on the nature and character of the Uprising of 1857. Although, it is a general history, which emphasizes every aspect of the Uprising, throws much light on the events, places, and personalities directly concerned to the Uprising of 1857. Many dimensions of the Uprising particularly distinct perspectives such as popular, national, military, religious, etc. has been analyzed in the modern context, and independent research and thinking. The role of different personalities also has been re-evaluated in the light of contemporary and primary sources. By writing this history the author has presented a new look of the Uprising based on critical analysis of the historical facts. This book is a humble attempt to remedy the deficiency which the author has felt after a long experience of reading and writing history. The British slowly and gradually snatched the political power of India from the Native rulers and on the pretext of moral improvement, the British Government adopted an intolerant religious policy, which led to the conversion from oriental religions to Christianity. Both Hindus and Muslims of this country began to feel that their religion was in danger, and particularly the Muslims due to their fanatical pride, and resented the Christian supremacy. Initially, the Indians resented the policies of the British Government and mobilized the civilians and militia through the famous chapati and lotus distribution. Finally, on 10th of May, the final rising exploded from Meerut which followed the long fight throughout North India. The titular Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar was enthroned in the Red Fort, and Delhi was made, once again, the capital of India. The entire history covered under different chapters of this book shows the real picture of the revolt. The whole topics are quite interesting, full of knowledge, and based on authentic sources with little hypothetical narrations.

Book excerpt: In this work, “New Dimensions of Indian Historiography” the whole period of Indian history, from Vedic to the current period, has been widely and accurately discussed. Along with different schools of historiography, the new emerging Hindutva historiography has been widely discussed. The so-called controversial kings and events which raise the eyebrow of the Hindutva historians have been especially discussed by mentioning the original sources. The relations between Aurangzeb and Shivaji, Akbar and Maharana Pratap, which works as a tool of spreading hatred between Hindus and Muslims have been proved as political and not at all religious relations. The intentionally raised controversy over the mosque at Ayodhya, Taj Mahal and other heritage buildings have also been widely discussed by quoting the original sources and unbiased hypothesis.

Book excerpt: The Indian Uprising of 1857 had a profound impact on the colonial psyche, and its spectre haunted the British until the very last days of the Raj. For the past 150 years most aspects of the Uprising have been subjected to intense scrutiny by historians, yet the nature of the outbreak itself remains obscure. What was the extent of the conspiracies and plotting? How could rumours of contaminated ammunition spark a mutiny when not a single greased cartridge was ever distributed to the sepoys? Based on a careful, even-handed reassessment of the primary sources, The Great Fear of 1857 explores the existence of conspiracies during the early months of that year and presents a compelling and detailed narrative of the panics and rumours which moved Indians to take up arms. With its fresh and unsentimental approach, this book offers a radically new interpretation of one of the most controversial events in the history of British India.
