Book excerpt: The potential importance of this system in atherogenesis as well as the accent on the possible and provocative immune nature of the atherogenic process are stressed. The newer techniques which are presented will permit the investigation of important clinical and experimental aspects which have hitherto escaped investigation and will contribute to the elucidation of the role of the reticuloendothelial system in health and disease. Indeed, the key to the elimination of many diseases of man may well be found within the cells which comprise this system, as more and more of their diverse and versatile activities become known.

Book excerpt: The circulatory system is usually considered to be composed of tubes of various diameters, characterized by collateral and terminal branches. There is also a tendency to treat blood vessels merely as conducting tubes in which the various structures of the wall act as mechanical pumps wlrich modify their diameter. This is, of course, not so. In fact, we know that blood vessels, and in particular arteries, are organs with personalities of their own and a particular susceptibility to several diseases. In addition, blood vessels differ in structure, according to their localization, and age at differing rates. The experimental work car ried out so far clearly confirms the data that have come from spontaneous human pathology; experimentally induced arterial lesions have a definite tendency to appear in certain arteries and not in others, depending on the experimental procedures used, and in each specific artery the lesions appear to have a specific location. We now know that the arterial wall is a metabo licallyactive structure, in which a number of enzyme activities have been clearly demonstrated. It possesses a sensitive vasa vasorum apparatus and a specific reactivity to various lesion-inducing stimuli. We must also remember that the arterial wall is in continuous contact with the blood circulating through the endothelial cells lining the vascular bed. It is obvious, therefore, that any variation in the circulating blood mass can modify the morphology as well as the function of the vessel wall.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gastrointestinal Surgery: Pathophysiology and Management is an invaluable reference text for surgeons and surgical trainees. Written entirely by Dr. Haile T. Debas, Dean of School of Medicine and former Professor and Chairman, Department of Surgery, at the University of California, San Francisco, this book provides the unified approach only found in a single-authored text. Based on the three pillars of understanding particular disease processes -- fundamental anatomy and physiology, pathopysiology, and clinical correlations -- surgical treatment of GI disease is presented as the means to correct abnormal physiology and restore health. Using an integrated approach of basic science and clinical practice, Dr. Debas allows the student of surgery to gain a solid understanding of disease processes that minimizes the need for rote memorization. Thirteen lavishly illustrated chapters cover the GI system as well as gastrointestinal peptides and peptide-secreting tumors, abdominal trauma, the abdominal wall, surgery for morbid obesity, the liver, spleen, retroperitoneum, and perioperative care. Dozens of summary tables throughout each chapter condense "essentials" for quick reference. Comprehensive discussions of clinical disorders review the surgical treatment options. With 400 illustrations and tables, including hundreds of anatomical line drawings commissioned exclusively for this textbook, Gastrointestinal Surgery provides a clinical and therapeutic approach to surgical diseases which will prove invaluable to the surgical trainee and the practitioner preparing for recertification.

It brings together both empirical data and theoretical developments that address the fundamental question of how psychosocial variables get inside the body to influence neurobiological processes that culminate in physical disease." From the Foreword by David C. Glass, PhD Emeritus Professor of Psychology Stony Brook University Edited by two leading health psychologists, The Handbook of Stress Science presents a detailed overview of key topics in stress and health psychology. With discussions on how stress influences physical health-including its effects on the nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular, and immune systems-the text is a valuable source for health psychologists, as well as researchers in behavioral medicine, neuroscience, genetics, clinical and social psychology, sociology, and public health. This state-of-the-art resource reviews conceptual developments, empirical findings, clinical applications, and investigative strategies and tools from the past few decades of stress research.
