Book excerpt: F. Scott Fitzgerald left behind a substantial body of work on New York, yet his city remains in our time terra incognita, talked about but rarely well met. Lost City takes on this important and under-examined, indeed misunderstood and misrepresented, aspect of Fitzgerald's writing. The author shows that Fitzgerald's geography amounts to more than the Plaza Hotel and a wasteland. His writing depicts a variety of districts and neighborhoods. His is not the New York of the Roaring Twenties. Locating Fitzgerald's

Book excerpt: Arguing that limited nationalist perspectives have circumscribed the critical scope of American Studies scholarship, Virtual Americas advocates a comparative criticism that illuminates the work of well-known literary figures by defamiliarizing it—placing it in unfamiliar contexts. Paul Giles looks at a number of canonical nineteenth- and twentieth-century American writers by focusing on their interactions with British culture. He demonstrates how American authors from Herman Melville to Thomas Pynchon have been compulsively drawn to negotiate with British culture so that their nationalist agendas have emerged, paradoxically, through transatlantic dialogues. Virtual Americas ultimately suggests that conceptions of national identity in both the United States and Britain have emerged through engagement with—and, often, deliberate exclusion of—ideas and imagery emanating from across the Atlantic. Throughout Virtual Americas Giles focuses on specific examples of transatlantic cultural interactions such as Frederick Douglass’s experiences and reputation in England; Herman Melville’s satirizing fictions of U.S. and British nationalism; and Vladimir Nabokov’s critique of European high culture and American popular culture in Lolita. He also reverses his perspective, looking at the representation of San Francisco in the work of British-born poet Thom Gunn and Sylvia Plath’s poetic responses to England. Giles develops his theory about the need to defamiliarize the study of American literature by considering the cultural legacy of Surrealism as an alternative genealogy for American Studies and by examining the transatlantic dimensions of writers such as Henry James and Robert Frost in the context of Surrealism.

Through original readings of Gertrude Stein, Henry James, Marcel Proust, and Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., this study rediscovers an overlooked cultural and social matrix and suggests an expanded range of responses to modernity.

It charts James' progress as he gathers the impressions upon which he will base his 'theory of America.' If James arrives as a 'restored absentee' seeking a renewed relationship with his homeland, the press greets his return with reverence for his status combined with disdain for his prose.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The figure of the American girl is one that surfaces regularly in Henry James's fiction. Most prominent in the international novels, where the compelling portrait of an Isabel Archer or a Maggie Verver commands attention. James's girl is a complex character eager for experience yet crippled by fear, hungry for selfhood yet tragically incapable of achieving it. In this lucid exploration of James's young women, Professor Fowler examines the psychology, literary function, and cultural roots of the American girl. The result is a new perspective on James's fiction--and a reassessment of his views on feminine identity, sexual relations, and American culture--that will be of interest and value to all students of American literature, women's studies, and Henry James.
