They can eat and assimi late more, and sleep better in Utah than the average man else where; in brief, under the stimulus of local conditions of climate, they can return - other things being equal - in thought and force, more and better work than the average of mankind in less fortunately endowed localities. The property of exhilaration, born of purity and rarity of our atmosphere, is an ever constant factor. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Resources and Attractions of Utah There can hardly be less than sheep in Utah. Pounds of wool were handled by Utah buyers in 1887. Of this about one-fourth is worked up by the Utah mills. Fleeces average 5 pounds for ewes, 7 pounds for wethers. Part of it ranges with the best California wools, as to quality, while part of it is inferior. Utah and Montana wools are considered better than the wools of the other Territories. Most of the Utah sheep came from New Mexico down to 1870. Since then ewes have been brought in from Cali fornia, generally fine-wooled Spanish Merinos, but little mixed; fine-wooled bucks from Ohio, and long-wooled from Canada. The same strain of blood in sheep does not produce quite so long a wool as in the east. It is so dry and dusty, the grease seems to absorb the alkali and mineral dust, which makes it harsher and more brittle. But since the large infusion of Merino blood, which has taken place in late years, there has been a marked improve ment in the quality of Utah wool, in respect of length, softness and firmness of fibre. It realizes to the grower, here, crude, about fifteen to twenty cents a pound, according to the range of prices abroad. The strain of blood in cattle, horses, and sheep has been greatly improved in recent years, but it is still the point requiring attention. In Vermont the breeder with the best ram has the precedence. Inferior wool comes from shiftless, careless breed ing. An authority says, aim for the best mutton if you would get the best wool.' This is the system in England, the great mutton-producing and combing-wool-producing country of the world. The characteristic qualities of the English combing wools have been developed upon originally short wooled animals simply through a constant effort to improve their carcasses for the mutton market. From this it seems that the interests of the grower, the consumer of meat, and the manufacturer of wool, are identical, and they all depend upon the quality of the stock ram of the flock. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Resources and Attractions of the Territory of Utah There is a general parallelism of the mountain chains, and all the structural features of local geology, the ranges, strike of great areas of upturned strata, larger outbursts of gigantic rocks, etc., are nearly parallel with the meridian. So the precious metals arrange themselves in parallel longitudinal zones. There is a zone of quicksilver, tin, and chromic iron on the coast ranges; one of copper along the foot-hills of the Sierras; one of gold further up the Sierras, the gold veins and resultant placers extending far into Alaska; one of silver, with comparatively little base metal, along the east base of the Sierras, stretching into Mexico; silver mines with complicated associations through Middle Mexico, Arizona, Middle Nevada, and Central Idaho; argentiferous galena through New Mexico, Utah and Western Montana; and, still further east, a continuous chain ofgold deposits in New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming and Montana.. The Jurassic disturbances in all probability is the dating point of a large class of lodes: a, those wholly enclosed in the granites, and 0, those in metamorphic beds of the series extending from the Azoic to the Jurassic. To this period may be referred the gold veins of California, those of the Humboldt mines, and those of White Pine, all of class I); and the Reese River veins, partly a, and partly b. The Colorado lodes are somewhat unique, and in general belong to the ancient type. To the Tertiary period may be definitely assigned the mineral veins traversing the early volcanic rock; as the Comstock Lode and veins of the Owyhee District, Idaho. By far the greater number of metaliferous lodes occur in the stratified metamorphic rocks or the ancient eruptive rocks of the Jurassic upheaval; yet very important, and, perhaps, more wonderfully productive, have been those silver lodes which lie wholly in the recent volcanic formations. The pioneers of Utah entered the Great Salt Lake Val ley in the fall of 1847, and in the following spring a small party from this body started south on an exploring expedition. Im mediately on reaching the summit of the divide, between what are now Salt Lake and Utah Counties, they gazed southward, and beheld stretched out before them, calm and undisturbed, a beautiful sheet of water some thirty miles in length, hemmed in on all sides by towering peaks, with yet enough of plain to tempt the settler, and with many streams pouring out from rugged ravines, threading their silvery way through the nu cultivated area until lost amid the sleeping waters of the lake. Roaming along the banks of these rivers in search of game, and about the shores of the lake, was a tribe of Indians who possessed the spot as their own. They were the Utes, though. The opinion of some is that they properly should be called Pah Utes, or Water Utes. The fact seems to be that not only this lake and Utah County, but even the territory, ultimately derived the name Utah from this tribe, and that Piute county is only if Pah Ute corrupted, or improved, as we may choose to think. There they remained for seven years, increasing rapidly by immigration from the Eastern States, Canada and Great Britain, until they aggregated twenty thousand souls. Religious and political animosity still pur sued them, and finally, on the 27th of June, 1844, their Prophet, Joseph Smith, and his brother Hyrum, the Patriarch of the Church, who had surrendered for trial on a trumped up charge of treason and riot, were murdered in Carthage jail by an anti-mormon mob, while under the pledged protection of the Governor of the State. Justice was never done upon the murderers. Under Brigham Young, the successor to Joseph Smith, the Mormon people, in February, 1846, began their famous exodus from Illinois, leaving Nauvoo with its Temple, which had just been dedi cated, to be pillaged and desecrated by their enemies. From their scattered camps in Iowa and on the Missouri, in the summer of that year, went forth at the call of their country the Mormon Battalion. The earliest and largest, consisting of four volumes, published in elegant and expensive style, had of necessity but a limited circulation. Nevertheless it may be found in many homes throughout the State, and upon the shelves of leading libraries in various parts of the land. The second history was written at the request of local educators, for use in the grammar grades of the public schools. Prepared in haste to meet an urgent demand, "The Making of a State" did not aim to give a complete presentation of the subject, though all salient points, social, political and industrial, were touched upon in its pages. Controversial matters were purposely omitted, for the sake of good feeling between "Mormon" and "Gentile" children attending those schools. The work now issued represents the realization of a desire to produce a history of Utah complete in a single volume, one that could be sold at such a figure as to place it within the reach of all. Moreover, it was my wish to make clearer certain points imperfectly presented in my first production. The period during which it was compiled - that of the anti-polygamy crusade - was one of strife and turmoil; books and documents had been confiscated or were scattered; and sources of information were not accessible nor so plentiful as they are at the present time. Consequently I labored at a great disadvantage. The difficulty of writing contemporaneous history, amid the heat and stress of happenings involved in the narrative, is one recognized by all intelligent minds. That I have experienced this difficulty, I admit. Never at any time, however, have I purposely misrepresented anybody or anything. I write from the "Mormon" viewpoint, but not as an Anti-"Gentile." I have none but friendly feelings toward all the people of Utah, regardless of sect, party, color, or creed. This is the story of my native State - a record of the facts as I behold them; and "with malice toward none," and "with charity for all," I send it forth upon its mission.
